It only takes a reminder to breathe,a moment to be still, and just like that, something in me settles, softens, makes space for imperfection. The harsh voice of judgment drops to a whisperand I remember again that life isn’t a relay race;that we will all cross the finish line;that waking up to life is whatwe were born for.As many times as I forget, catch myself charging forwardwithout even knowing where I’m going, that many times I can make the choiceto stop, to breathe and be, and walkslowly into the mystery.by Danna Faulds

In this episode, we discuss a poem by Li-Young Lee. In the episode, I make a mistake by saying the poem is titled "So, we're dust" when in fact it's titled "To Hold":So we’re dust. In the meantime, my wife and Imake the bed. Holding opposite edges of the sheet,we raise it, billowing, then pull it tight, measuring by eye as it falls into alignmentbetween us. We tug, fold, tuck. And if I’m lucky, she’ll remember a recent dream and tell me.One day we’ll lie down and not get up.One day, all we guard will be surrendered.Until then, we’ll go on learning to recognizewhat we love, and what it takesto tend what isn’t for our having. So often, fear has led meto abandon what I know I must relinquishin time. But for the moment,I’ll listen to her dream, and she to mine, our mutual hearing callingmore and more detail into the lightof a joint and fragile keeping.

"[When we meditate], we often think that somehow we’re going to improve, which is a subtle aggression against who we really are...We can still be timid or jealous or full of feelings of unworthiness. Meditation practice isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better. It’s about befriending who we are already. The ground of practice is you or me or whoever we are right now, just as we are. "Don’t meditate to fix yourself, to improve yourself, to redeem yourself; rather, do it as an act of love, of deep warm friendship to yourself. In this way there is no longer any need for the subtle aggression of self-improvement, for the endless guilt of not doing enough. "Awareness is your refuge. Awareness of the changingness of feelings, of attitudes, of moods, of material change and emotional change. Stay with that, because it’s a refuge that is indestructible. It’s not something that changes. It’s a refuge you can trust in. This refuge is not something that you create. It’s not a creation. It’s not an ideal. It’s very practical and very simple, but easily overlooked or not noticed. When you’re mindful, you’re beginning to notice, it’s like this." -Ajahn Sumedho

In this episode, I share the contemporary fable, Upstream Downstream by Donald Arnell:It was many years ago that the villagers of Downstream recall spotting the first body in the river. Some old timers remember how spartan were the facilities and procedures for managing that sort of thing. Sometimes they say, it took hours to pull 10 people from the river, and even then only a few would survive.Though the number of victims in the river has increased greatly in recent years, the good folk of Downstream have responded admirably to the challenge. Their rescue system is clearly second to none: most people discovered in the swirling waters are reached within 20 minutes-many less than 10. Only a small number drown each day before help arrives - a big improvement from the way it use to be.Talk to the people of Downstream and they'll speak with pride about the new hospital by the edge of the waters, the flotilla of rescue boats ready for service at a moment's notice, the comprehensive plans for coordinating all the manpower involved, and the large numbers of highly trained and dedicated swimmers always ready to risk their lives to save victims from the raging currents. So it cost a lot, say to the Downstreamers, but what else can descent people do except to provide whatever is necessary when human lives are at stake.Oh, a few people in Downstream have raised the question now and again, but most folks show little interest in what's happening Upstream. it seems there's so much to do to help those in the river that nobody's got time to check how all those bodies are getting in the river in the first place. That's the way things are sometimes.

In this episode, we discuss a quote by Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman about finding wholeness through more simplicity, minimalism, and meaning, rather than the chase for more goals. The quote is: "In the rush to feel whole, people will often add more and more goals to their plate when in reality what people often need is to add more simplicity and minimalism to their lives so they can energetically put their entire being into deepening something that is already meaningful." Before you know what kindness really is you must lose things, feel the future dissolve in a momentlike salt in a weakened broth. What you held in your hand, what you counted and carefully saved, all this must go so you knowhow desolate the landscape can be between the regions of kindness. How you ride and ridethinking the bus will never stop, the passengers eating maize and chicken will stare out the window forever. Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness, you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho lies dead by the side of the road. You must see how this could be you,how he too was someonewho journeyed through the night with plansand the simple breath that kept him alive. Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside, you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing. You must wake up with sorrow. You must speak to it till your voicecatches the thread of all sorrows and you see the size of the cloth. Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore, only kindness that ties your shoesand sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread, only kindness that raises its head from the crowd of the world to say it is I you have been looking for, and then goes with you everywhere like a shadow or a friend.Naomi Shihab Nye

When we're changing a pattern, be it a way of thinking, speaking, or behaving, the first step is simply becoming aware of what we're doing and when we're doing it. That’s what we come to know with tremendous curiosity and interest." ~ Pema ChodronAs always, if you'd like to get free access to my resource library, including guided meditations, book recommendations, app recommendations, and more, text your email address to: +1 (631) 337-8298And if you'd like to get daily inspirational text messages to your phone from me, just text the word "podcast" to 1-631-305-2874
When it comes to social justice, I’ve noticed my impulse to jump into action, without also doing the inner work. I’ll quickly condemn oppression, express my support as anti-racist, talk to white friends about these issues, but not actively reflect on my role in the problem, because “of course I’m not racist.”In this episode, I'll share some of the harder questions I’ve been asking myself -- ones that require more honesty, humility, and vulnerability. I’ve found that it’s one thing for me to be vocal about fighting against oppression, and it’s another thing for me to become intimate with my own subconscious conditioning. I hope it inspires you to ask your own hard questions, and stay present to this often difficult exploration.

Many meditation traditions are goal-centric. That is, the meditation practice is used as a tool to get to a level of "awakening" that you're not already at. Every day, a musician tunes their instrument. It changes, of course, because of temperature, air pressure, humidity, etc. This ongoing "attunement" is essential for the instrument to play at its best. It wouldn't be possible to play a song well with an instrument that was attuned a few days ago, let alone a few years ago. And yet, as humans, seldom do we tune our awareness to our own instruments--our minds and bodies. We're all being impacted by this pandemic. With such a radical change in the ecosystem of our life, it's very likely some "negative" things are accumulating in the background: stress, fear, relationship tension, relationship grudges, grief, worry, the strain of isolation, poor sleep, etc. The more these things accumulate, the more they weigh us down, leaving us with a felt sense of not quite being ourselves. "Don’t meditate to fix yourself, to improve yourself, to redeem yourself; rather, do it as an act of love, of deep warm friendship to yourself. In this way there is no longer any need for the subtle aggression of self-improvement, for the endless guilt of not doing enough. It offers the possibility of an end to the ceaseless round of trying so hard that wraps so many people’s lives in a knot. Instead there is now meditation as an act of love. How endlessly delightful and encouraging."-Bob Sharples
