Today’s episode is sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic. Today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I chat with Dr. Dennis Bruemmer of the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Bruemmer and I discuss in detail how stress and lack of sleep can affect your risk of heart disease (spoiler: it’s often through less nutritious choices). We also talk about different female life stages and risk of heart disease like gestational diabetes and menopause. And I talk about the three major dietary strategies of heart health (Mediterranean, DASH and Plant-Based) and the core tenants they all have in common. Thank you so much to the Cleveland Clinic for sponsoring Bite Back. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I will be talking to Dr Emily Contois,  an Associate Professor at the University of Tulsa specializing in how identities are formed at the vital intersection of food, the body, and ideas about health. She is the author of “Diners, Dudes, and Diets: How Gender and Power Collide in Food Media and Culture” and co-editor of “Food Instagram: Identity, Influence, and Negotiation”. Today we will be riding on the heels of the popular Netflix show Adolescence, we are exploring the very scary effect of the manosphere, incel and “red pill” subcultures on young boys. Today we’re going to chat about how the patriarchy harms not just women, but men as well. We discuss the dangerous teachings of the manosphere and leading influencers like Andrew Tate. We also talk about the pipeline that young men are finding themselves going down starting with innocuous places (ie. self improvement, dating, fitness, dieting) that lures them into incel culture. We talk in detail about the intersection between diet culture and the manosphere and the lack of body positivity movements for men. We talk about the role of bullying, social isolation, AI, p0rn, types of school, and gender roles modelled at home.  I finish with a list of potential actionable tips to help you start to build emotional resilience, media literacy and tolerance to different expressions of gender to help set the stage to allow your kids to reject these manosphere ideologies. Be sure to check out my first episode with Emily: “Ladies eat salad, men eat steak & burgers”.References:https://www.everyonesinvited.uk/primary/readhttps://aibm.org/research/male-suicide-data/?https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/data.html?https://www.bbfc.co.uk/about-us/news/children-see-pornography-as-young-as-seven-new-report-findshttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39907845/https://cyberbullying.org/cyberbullying-continues-to-rise-among-youth-in-the-united-states-2023?https://tribune.com.pk/story/2536330/netflix-drama-adolescence-prompts-anti-misogyny-curriculum-shift-in-uk-schoolshttps://unpluggedcanada.com/Check in with today’s amazing guest: Dr Emily Contois, Associate Professor at the University of Tulsa. Follow at @emilycontois Website: www.emilycontois.comBooks:  - Diners Dudes and Diets               - Food InstagramDisclaimer: The content in this episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is never a substitute for medical advice. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I am chatting breastfeeding with Dr Lauren Hughes, a board certified pediatrician, lactation consultant, mom and founder of Bloom pediatrics. I will start by sharing my own personal story about breastfeeding struggles and Lauren and I will vent over the enormous pressures women feel by “breast is best” messaging. We will also talk about the potential dangers to baby and mom of insisting on breastfeeding at any and all costs. Lauren will chat about the *actual* risks of various activities and substances while breastfeeding (alcohol, caffeine, ozempic, smoking, CBD and THC) and discuss whether or not you should change your diet while breastfeeding if baby is fussy. And I will break down the data on the benefits of breastfeeding over formula for baby’s health, and future risk of obesity and low IQ when we rule out socioeconomic confounders (spoiler: the benefits might not be as profound as you might think). Note the purpose of this episode is not to downplay the benefits of  breastfeeding for mom or baby, but to help empower women to feel confident in the feeding choices they make.Check in with today’s amazing guest: Dr. Lauren Hughes, MD, IBCLCInstagram: @bloomdpcWebsite: drlaurenhughes.com References:Cribsheet by Emily Osterhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29191700/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6691042/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37881498/https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/cea.12228https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/193490https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0196070994901341#:~:text=Results%3A%20The%20risk%20of%20AOM,who%20were%20never%20breast%2Dfed.https://www.pure.fo/en/publications/risk-factors-of-early-otitis-media-in-the-danish-national-birth-c#:~:text=When%20a%20Bonferroni%20correction%20was,a%20risk%20of%20early%20OM.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29084835/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8696193/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28398851/https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4077166/#:~:text=Results%20from%20standard%20multiple%20regression,of%20the%2011%20outcomes%20studied.https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1633786/https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1633819/ Disclaimer: The content in this episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is never a substitute for medical advice. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, we will be discussing the real risk of so called “toxins” in our beauty products as we have been told by the Clean Beauty industry. Our guest today is PhD cosmetic chemist, Dr Michelle Wong aka @Labmuffinbeautyscience. Michelle will be discussing the real of “toxins” getting into our body through our skin. Sh will also discuss actual risks and benefits of mineral vs chemical sunscreen, parabens in our shampoo, and benzoyl peroxide in our acne cream, and what vulnerable populations like pregnant people need to avoid in their beauty products. She also discusses why the clean beauty movement and the products it promotes may not only be less efficacious but also less safe. I conclude with a very important conversation about the EWG and why their “dirty dozen”, “toxic twenty” and “Skin Deep” database should not be used as a credible source of science. References:https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2958246https://www.seslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/groups/Royal_Hospital_for_Women/Mothersafe/documents/skinhaircareandcosmetictreatmentsapril2021.pdfhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6773459/https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0272989X15621877#:~:text=In%20studies%202%20and%203,3)%20than%20the%20synthetic%20drug.https://www.teawithmd.com/2015/07/ewg-myths-about-sunscreen-safety/https://www.dermatologytimes.com/view/addressing-sunscreen-safety-a-review-of-ewg-s-2024-guide-to-sunscreenshttps://www.theecowell.com/blog/a-case-against-the-ewghttps://sharonmahan.com/the-problem-with-ewg-skin-deep/https://chemistscorner.com/why-the-ewg-skin-deep-database-is-still-a-dubious-source/https://cyrillelaurent.com/2019/11/06/ewg-skin-deep-what-a-scam/Check in with today’s amazing guest: Dr. Michelle WongInstagram: @labmuffinbeautyscienceWebsite: labmuffin.comYoutube: @LabmuffinbeautyscienceBook: The Science of Beauty by Michelle Wong Disclaimer: The content in this episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is never a substitute for medical advice. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I’m going to be unpacking all things metabolism. I will be explaining in detail that metabolism is a lot more than just how many calories you burn to maintain your body weight, and exactly how much your metabolism slows down with aging and weight loss. I then will be going into detail on various metabolism boosting “hacks” and exactly how many extra calories they would burn. These include: eating breakfast, mini meals/snacks, cold plunges, spicy food, caffeine and green tea, HIIT workouts, protein and muscle mass. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I will be chatting with clinical psychologist, Dr. Jonathan Stea, author of the book “Mind the Science: Saving your Mental Health from the Wellness Industry”. We will be discussing the damage of mental health medication stigma (aka “pill shaming”) including my own experience being pill shamed online. We will chat about the risks of rejecting psychiatry in favor of grifty holistic wellness alternatives, especially when they feed into conspiracy theories. We will be debunking common anti science tropes and phrases “do your own research” or “find the root cause”. And I'm going to close off with some discussion on healthism and how it causes harm to all people, but especially those in less privileged positions.References:  https://www.researchgate.net/publication/317611181_The_effect_of_self-compassion_on_the_selfCheck in with today’s amazing guest: Dr. Jonathan Stea, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary and author of Mind the Science: Saving Your Mental Health from the Wellness Industry.Follow @dr_jonathan_steawww.jonathanstea.comhttps://jonathanstea.substack.comBook: https://www.amazon.ca/Mind-Science-Saving-Wellness-Industry/dp/1039008232Disclaimer: The content in this episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is never a substitute for medical advice. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I will be chatting with food blogger, cookbook author and nutritionist Sarah Britton about her experiences with raw veganism becoming a dangerous eating disorder and how she untangled her diet from her core identity. Sarah talks about the exclusivity of certain extreme diets like raw veganism and how it serves to perpetuate the internalization of one’s diet as identity. She talks about the physical and mental health implications of her restrictive raw vegan diet and what triggered her body to beg for a diet change. She talks about the identity crisis she faced upon introducing animal products to her diet, especially as a person in the public eye. And I finish with some tips on how to uncouple your diet from your core identity if and when your diet is no longer working for you.  References:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5623148https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/Check in with today’s amazing guest: Sarah BrittonWebsite: https://www.mynewroots.org/Cookbooks : https://www.mynewroots.org/cookbooks/@mynewroots Trigger Warning: I want to flag that we will be talking about eating disorders, and we will also be discussing Sarah’s experiences with veganism, some of which was not positive or helpful. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, we will be chatting with Registered dietitian and PhD Dr. Eric Williamson. Eric is a fellow registered dietitian specializing in fitness, performance and longevity, with a PhD that focused on the intersection of exercise nutrition and metabolic health. He’s also the director of nutrition at Canyon Ranch wellness resorts and has been a key scientific advisor for my supplement brand, Neue Theory. Eric and I discuss the compensatory mechanisms that come into play when we try to lose weight (which makes it seemingly impossible). We talk about the importance of muscle mass for helping to “boost” metabolism. We discuss the role of women’s hormones in making weight loss more difficult. It’s officially diet culture season, and if you’ve been trying to make peace with food and your body while still making peace with food, this episode is for you. Instead of constantly thinking about what we need to permanently cut out of our diet (which lets be real, never lasts), we need to move from scarcity mentality to a place of abundance and nourishment where we’re focusing on what we can add to our diet, rather than always take away. My Hunger Crushing Combo™ helps you do just that by encouraging you to focus on adding a source of fiber, protein and healthy fats to meals and snacks. This helps to increase satiety ,improve blood sugar levels, increase overall nutrition and stop moralizing food. The result is a sustainable approach to eating well that can be easily adapted to meet your needs and goals. Check out my Hunger Crushing Combo playlist here for lots of HCC inspo:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBsTEGKqVLg&list=PLVstyvOTT8A-zrgOp2jcmJJFcyN4RNZX8Important Moments:References:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18827579/https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3718776/https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3649463/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7972417/https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002916523292461?ref=pdf_download&fr=RR-2&rr=88880777798f3972https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4251481/https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4034047/https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4578962/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31256714/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34538033/https://ajcn.nutrition.org/article/S0002-9165(23)48905-8/fulltexthttps://authors.library.caltech.edu/records/x2xza-km768https://med.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Nutrition/An_Introduction_to_Nutrition_(Zimmerman)/05%3A_Lipids/5.04%3A_Digestion_and_Absorption_of_Lipidshttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18097844/https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-54535-xhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7259519/ Disclaimer: The content in this episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is never a substitute for medical advice. Happy new year, friends! In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I will be talking to Lauren Hope Krass. Lauren is a comedian, a contributor to Betches media, and the co-host of the Good Bodies podcast - formerly called Diet Starts Tomorrow. She’s also a body positivity advocate and a fat activist and I’m so excited to have her on our show! Today we will be unpacking common misunderstandings and criticisms of the body positivity movement (ie. that it “glorifies obesity”) and how it differs from movements like fat activism and fat acceptance. Lauren also discusses how fat activism and body positivity is important for everyone, including straight size (smaller bodied) folks. We’re going to chat about how weight loss drugs like ozempic are affecting the fat acceptance community. Lauren also shares some tips about how straight sized folks can act as allies to their larger bodied friends. I finish off by discussing how fat phobia affects people in larger bodies, and how this differs from thin privilege.. No matter what your body looks like, where you are in your body acceptance journey, this is an essential listen any time of year, but especially as we’re currently in some toxic new years resolution waters.References:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6565398/#:~:text=More%20than%20three%20in%20five,are%20well%20documented%2C%20Alberga%20said.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1038/oby.2003.142https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4381543/https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2016.02063/fullhttps://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1471-2458-12-525https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1059601108321518https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21820369/ Check in with today’s amazing guest: Lauren Hope Krass. Today we will be diving into the intersection of gender norms and food choices. We will discuss how women are socialized to choose light dainty foods like salad whereas men are encouraged to eat hearty meals like steak and potatoes. We will be discussing the sneaky ways that diet culture and the food industry plays to these norms (ie. how foods are marketed to women vs men). We’re gonna talk about the “cool girl” story arc in TV and film (think Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls) and how that can be really damaging to young women’s relationship with food and their body. And I’m going to leave you with some actionable tips on how to reject these gendered food expectations which may specifically come in handy during the holidays when food judgement is at an all time high.References:https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/14/11/2240https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11199-011-0022-5https://19thnews.org/2022/09/poll-healthcare-lgbtq-medical-discrimination/https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15534510.2015.1008037https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0001879107000437 Check in with today’s amazing guest: Dr Emily Contois, Associate Professor at the University of Tulsa. Follow at @emilycontois Website: https://emilycontois.com/Diners Dudes and Diets: https://www.amazon.com/Diners-Dudes-Diets-Collide-Culture/dp/1469660741Food Instagram: https://www.amazon.ca/Food-Instagram-Identity-Influence-Negotiation-ebook/dp/B09YDNDK87 Disclaimer: The content in this episode is for educational and entertainment purposes only and is never a substitute for medical advice. In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, and today we’re talking with anti diet dietitian and fellow podcaster and author, Christy Harrison about wellness culture grifters. We’re going to be talking a lot about how wellness culture is co-opting intuitive eating, along with the rise in different dubious diagnoses and spurious cures including leaky gut, chronic candida and adrenal fatigue. We’ll be diving into how pseudoscience wellness programs focus their efforts on cancer patients and other vulnerable people. We’re talking about wellness MLMs and why the vast majority of supplements out there are poorly manufactured and kinda BS - and why the business model may actually be making you less healthy.  And finally, I’ll be leaving you with some harrowing last thoughts about the real causes of health inequalities (aka. In todays episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I share my eating disorder (orthorexia) origin story, and I speak with my own sister (and clinical psychologist), Dr. Skye Fitzpatrick about how mental illnesses like eating disorders affect and are affected by family members and those in your immediate circle. Skye and I talk about how my eating disorder affected her as a young teen, and how families can often do more harm than good by over-accommodating the individual struggling with mental illness. This can often keep the person who is suffering from mental illness in a place where they don’t have to recover. I leave listeners with a list of dos and dont’s for talking to a loved one about your concerns around their disordered eating, and I also share a script on how you can broach the topic with your loved one.Check in with today’s amazing guest:Dr. Skye Fitzpatrick (my amazing sister!) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at York University..
