A hilarious miscommunication catches up with us an hour later, leaving Kay giggling far after the mics were turned off and well into production of the episode. We discuss the character arc of the MMC, and we are delighted to get a male perspective on some of the burning questions that we have. As usual, Kay's search history got some questionable exercise, but the mind just sometimes needs a visual. We discuss the difficulty of two authors collaborating on a book, and at least we're consistent in our opinions on them based on past episodes. Both Kay and Elle got stuck on the inclusion of Greed, agreeing that it seems to be one of the more difficult deadly sins to utilize for a romance narrative. This week's book has us discussing unsafe first date behavior (hello, meeting in secret at midnight is never going to be a good idea) which ultimately gives us a morally grey meet cute. We were pleased to discover that we've got a monster peen on an otherwise mostly human (with a pumpkin head) MMC, and Kay is on board with the full sensory experience. Also, yet another standard 6'4" romantic lead, which Kay is here for. For a halloween themed monster romance, we were pleasantly surprised with the cozy feel and HEA. Elle takes issue with the fact that the FMC doesn't believe in the entity of Death when she herself is a witch. Both Kay and Elle agree that the fact that he removes the pumpkin head is way creepier than if it had stayed on throughout, and discuss how important kissing is for intimacy, even with the undead. Kay questions if the relationship power dynamics in this story would have made more sense if it wasn't so rushed. Elle and Kay were both surprised that we somehow managed to do the first book in a series, and are both interested in reading the books that follow. As with any darker romance, we encourage listeners to take care of themselves and check the trigger warnings before reading or listening. We do find ourselves wishing that we had a male perspective this week, as the only female character is a coffee shop waitress that has no real role in the story. WITS Smut Scale: 🐙🐙 (this was a compromise- the spice is low, but there's 3 people so listen at your own discretion) This book sends us back to 2015 in so many ways, and honestly times were simpler back then. Elle is shocked to find out that Kay still uses pinterest, but not at all shocked at her love of the PSL- just don't call her a pumpkin spiced sexual. We're not sure what it says about us, but we were both disappointed that the coffee doesn't turn into a man (blame the margarita book from a few episodes back. Elle is truly horrified, as always, at the lack of outrage at a beverage being spilled all over someone. Too sticky. And hot. As always, it wouldn't be an episode if we didn't research something mid-conversation. Overall, this one was too weird for Kay, and Elle admits that this book made Corn Daddy seem less weird. Both rate this ⭐ and Kay got a little sassy with her casting choices. Welcome back WITS Listeners!!This week, we read Forked by Ruth CardelloWITS Smut Scale: 🐙 (1.5?) extra .5 for the fork maybe?This week, Kay and Elle discuss meeting your neighbors in apartment living, and how sometimes putting yourself out there can end up with embarrassing mistakes and petty theft. Elle definitely has a favorite fork, but definitely not the same kind of fork as our main character. Kay is still mad about the financial burden that the main character took on, only to be essentially ghosted, and would have rage-returned those clothes immediately. As always, we have at least one thing that we need to Google mid-conversation. This week, in honor of the upcoming fall season, we read Corn Daddy by Helena Woodcock.WITS Smut Scale Rating: 🐙🐙🐙🐙We weren't really prepared for all of the dark romance elements in this book, which we really should have, considering the shopping list of trigger warnings. Elle and Kay discuss whether or not we would have the same reaction to finding ourselves in the predicament where our main character first meets the Corn King. We were also surprised to find that Corn Daddy has some boundaries when they first appear to not be on the same page with what they were each looking for out of their relationship. Also, we may never look at an ear of corn or melted butter the same way ever again. This was the first book in a while that Kay and Elle had drastic differences in their ratings! Elle thought this was juuuust a little too weird for her and gave this ⭐⭐ while Kay loved the dark romance elements and thought it was also kind of hilarious, giving this ⭐⭐⭐⭐. This book had us back to feeling the way we were a la Unhinged.
