What's the current situation on the ground in Israel and how are the Israeli people responding to the war against Iran? Jeff Morgan, host of the 'SO BE IT!' Jews for Jesus outreach ministry program and YouTube channel, joins Frank from his home near Tel Aviv to discuss his work as a street apologist in Israel and how citizens are dealing with the current crisis. During their conversation, Frank and Jeff will address questions like: What is life like in Israel right now? Do citizens and politicians in Israel support the war against Iran? How did Jeff become a Christian after being raised in a secular Jewish home and practicing New Age spirituality and meditation for 20 years? What's the difference between Rabbinic Judaism and Messianic Judaism and how has diligently studying Jewish history helped Jeff share and spread the Gospel in Israel? What is the current state of Judaism in Israel and are more people converting to Christianity? Why is Christianity such a loaded word to Jewish people? Does the New Testament make the Old Testament obsolete? Tune in to learn specific ways you can support the humanitarian efforts and ministry work of Jews for Jesus and how to spark meaningful conversations with Orthodox and traditional Jews. What is this thing called "deconstruction" that has disrupted, dismantled, and destroyed the faith of so many people? Is it really a quest for truth, or is this radical spiritual makeover motivated by something else? As the deconstruction movement continues to grow in popularity, families and faith communities are often blindsided by individuals who leave Christianity and place the blame on "toxic Christians" or the allegedly “immoral" God of the Bible. How do you keep the line of communication open with "exvangelicals" and what types of questions can help foster meaningful faith conversations? This week, our friends Alisa Childers and Tim Barnett join Frank to get to the heart of deconstruction and provide answers for Christians looking to tactfully engage people who have been swept up in the movement. During this podcast episode, they'll discuss the inspiration behind their brand-new book, 'The Deconstruction of Christianity: What It Is, Why It’s Destructive, and How to Respond' and also identify some of the pitfalls that have led many to abandon Christianity altogether. Listen as Frank, Alisa, and Tim answer questions like: What is the motivation behind deconstruction? Why doesn't Alisa classify her faith crisis as true deconstruction? What's an exvangelical and where did the term originate? What are Tim and Alisa's personal experiences with exvangelicals? What are some of the glaring inconsistencies within the deconstruction movement? Should Christians interpret the Bible "literally"?   If the deconstruction movement has come knocking on your door, this is the episode for you! As you'll hear during the conversation, having a strong grasp on the true Gospel and a working knowledge of apologetics can help Christians to escape the draw to deconstruction. Frank, Alisa, and Tim will only scratch the surface in this podcast, so be sure to check out the upcoming midweek podcast where they'll dive deeper into the consequences of deconstruction, its connection to critical theory, and the best way to communicate with people who call you "toxic". Have there been any significant archaeological finds that support the biblical account of the fall of Jericho? Joshua 6 describes the details of the conquest, led by Joshua himself, that took place almost 40 years after the Exodus from Egypt. But what exactly have archaeologists been able to uncover during Jericho’s recent excavations within the last century? In this week’s podcast, archaeologist, author, and Biola Professor, Dr. Titus Kennedy, joins Frank to discuss his new eye-opening research article entitled 'The Bronze Age Destruction of Jericho, Archaeology, and the Book of Joshua' where he analyzes the current existing evidence for the historical destruction of Jericho. Frank and Titus answer questions like: Where is Jericho located and is the site contested? How do archaeologists and scholars determine the dating of the destruction of Jericho? Who are the main players that have contributed to excavations at Jericho? Does the archaeology seem to support or discredit Jericho’s biblical account? What conclusions have different archaeologists come to based on their data and findings?   For decades, skeptics, scholars, and archaeologists have disputed the details of this well-known story in the Bible. But where does the evidence actually lead? Dr. Kennedy has excavated all over the Middle East, and in this exciting new episode, he'll reveal some of the fascinating artifacts that have been discovered near Jericho, and how these clues corroborate with the biblical narrative. Why do we study apologetics? To win arguments? No! The ultimate goal is to know God personally (not just with head knowledge) and to make Him known. After all, if we just believe that God exists, we're no better than the demons in James 2:19! On a lawyerly quest for truth, #1 nationally best-selling author David Limbaugh returns with his co-author and daughter Christen to discuss their new book, The Resurrected Jesus: The Church in the New Testament. In this fifth and final installment of the bestselling Jesus series, this book is part commentary and part devotional and digs into the New Testament epistles with passion and demonstrates to readers that even though Paul penned these writings thousands of years ago, they are still applicable to the Church today. We might ask ourselves: What's always worth fighting for? The truth of the Gospel! Frank, David, and Christen discuss our identity in Christ, spiritual warfare, how we are saved by grace, not works, and the greatest threats facing the American church today. They also discuss the late great Rush Limbaugh and how his faith gave him strength during his last days while fighting cancer. Dr. Chip Bennett rejoins Frank for another fascinating and revealing look into the hidden themes of the Bible (if you haven’t heard the first show in this series, go back two weeks and listen to “Hidden Themes in the Bible"). This time Dr. Bennett further unpacks how we should interpret the Bible to discover some of its literary themes. They discuss one theme that begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation (the City of God); one in Acts 12, and the literary theme of the Book of Revelation that comes right out of the Old Testament. God’s tapestry is amazing! Go to www.reachnextgen.com to learn more! If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. Why are women paid less on average than men for the same job? Is it sexism? Why do certain ethnic groups have worse outcomes than others?  Is it racism?  Why did Alberto Salazar beat Frank Turek by 43 minutes in the 1981 New York City Marathon?  Was it discrimination?  How do you discover the causes for different outcomes in life?   Frank shows that true cause and effect regarding outcomes in our society is much more difficult to establish than those who chant slogans.  There are hundreds of reasons why people wind up where they are.   Discrimination may explain some of it, but our country has made great progress away from racism despite what current woke people say.  Racism does not explain everything.   If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. If you want to deceive someone to believe a falsehood, dress up the falsehood to look beautiful or at least more attractive.  This deception occurs every day in our culture, and sometimes the church when people use language as a beautiful cover for sin.  In this show, Frank looks at how people do this by using attractive words— such as Love, tolerance, justice, equality, progressive, and the like— to make you feel better about doing something wrong.  Listening might help you discern truth from deception and avoid sin and pain. Almost everyone is in love with love. But what is love and how does it relate to sex? Dr. Sean McDowell joins Frank to offer insights from his new book 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚: 𝙎𝙚𝙭, 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝘾𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚. Frank and Sean discuss everything from the purpose of life to the purpose of sex, as well as issues such as singleness, pornography, cohabitation, and transgenderism. These issues are overtaking our culture, and Christians must be able to understand them and help the people they impact. This podcast will help! Unhappy?  It’s impossible to be happy unless you are thankful.  Frank uses the book of Romans and common sense to show why. Along the way, Frank addresses the politically incorrect passages in Romans 1 and asks questions to people who disagree with Paul and Jesus. Frank also addresses the following questions listeners have:  Why isn’t Jeremiah 29:11 a promise to us? Does God condone concubines and polygamy? Does God speak to Christians directly?  Why doesn’t He speak to me? For years, émigrés from the former Soviet bloc have been telling New York Times best-selling author, Rod Dreher they see telltale signs of "soft" totalitarianism cropping up in America. In his new book, Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents, Dreher amplifies the alarm sounded by these brave men. “America is sleepwalking into soft totalitarianism. If we ignore the prophetic voices of those who survived Communism, we deserve what we get,” says Dreher.  We are walking into a trap, and the solution is much more than politics.    Mr. Dreher joins Frank to expose this encroaching problem and offer some solutions.  All Christians need to listen to this!  If you begin to live by lies now, you will not resist when you’re pressured to deny Christ.   If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. How should Christians react to an election that they think may be fraudulent, regardless of who they support?  How should we treat those who disagree with us politically?  Despite the political upheaval, what will, thankfully, never change in the Christian’s life?  Frank addresses those questions and then offers a short primer on economics which shows why socialism doesn’t work— in fact, it can’t work because it misdiagnoses human nature and economics 101.  Young people especially need to listen to this.  If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. The creator of VeggieTales, Phil Vischer, just put out a video causing some Christians to doubt the importance of voting for pro-life candidates.   Frank wrote a response to the video that you can access at Crossexamined.org.  On this show, pro-life author and trainer, Scott Klusendorf, joins Frank to discuss the flaws in Mr. Vischer’s video and to make the case for life in a concise way.  They also respond to some of the most prominent pro-abortion objections and show that Christians do not qualify a candidate on one issue, but we rightfully disqualify a candidate on one issue.  Just watch the one minute video at caseforlife.com to see why (this is a video that YouTube tried to censor). What have we learned from the COVID pandemic and our response to it?  Does the data show that the lockdown worked?  What was the total human cost of the lockdown?   What steps did the media take to disseminate “panic porn”?  Why were the models so wrong?  Why do we have conflicting scientific opinions? How many people really did die from COVID?  Is the current increase in cases really something to worry about?  What is the death rate and are deaths going up or down?   How should we respond to this time?  Dr. Jay Richards joins Frank to discuss those and other questions related to his timely new book “The Price of Panic:  How the Tyranny of Experts Turned a Pandemic into a Catastrophe”.  If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. There is a far deeper problem than atheism infecting the church. Alisa Childers, a Christian singer with ZOEgirl, almost got infected herself. She was challenged to renounce the true gospel and adopt another gospel—that of progressive Christianity. She joins Frank to tell her story and discuss her fabulous new book “Another Gospel,” which is part autobiographical and part apologetics. Among the issues they cover: How did your pastor try to convert away from the true Gospel? What is progressive and Christian about progressive Christianity? What are the basic beliefs of progressive Christianity? What the signs of a person or church-going in that direction? Why do people become progressive Christians? How is progressive Christianity more intolerant than true Christianity? What are its racist and Marxist roots?  What evidence do we have that the early Christians were conservative, not progressive? How do you reach out to those who consider themselves progressive Christians? Get the book! Here’s Frank’s endorsement: "I love this book! Alisa Childers takes you on a captivating journey from her unreflective conservative Christian faith to the cliff of another gospel and then back home to the true Jesus. Along the way, she deconstructs progressive Christianity with wit, insight, and easy-to-remember evidence. Another Gospel? will inoculate you from a temptation far more seductive than atheism. What is critical race theory? What does BLM stand for as an organization? Can Christians support it? Frank interviews Neil Mammen and Kevin McGary, co-founders of EveryBLM.com. Here are some of the questions they discuss:   What is critical race theory? What is intersectionality? How many races are they? Are there still systematic injustices in American Law?  If so, where are they? Should reparations be paid for past injustices? What is the BLM organization for and against politically? Is There a Non-Marxist Biblical Alternative to ‘Black Lives Matter?’ Does EVERY Black Life matter? How can you fruitfully interact with BLM protestors?  What can you do to help minorities in America? Why can’t two men running for President debate respectfully?  Maybe it’s because our entire culture—which includes you and me—can’t debate respectfully.  Why can’t we?  Way back in 1978, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, the Russian dissident, and author who spent eight years in a Russian Gulag, gave a prophetic speech at Harvard’s graduation.  It could have been written today because Solzhenitsyn nails the problems in our culture that have led to the divide.  Frank recites highlights of the speech, the problems Solzhenitsyn identifies and offers what we can do to solve them.   If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. Are you having trouble reaching your children—elementary school through college—with the truth of Christianity?  If so, maybe it’s because you haven’t considered what really motivates Gen Z.  Dr. Sean McDowell joins Frank to discuss How to Reach and Equip Gen Z, which is also the title of Sean's brand new online course starting this week (go to Crossexamined.org and click “Online Courses).   Among the questions they discuss on this show:   Who is Gen Z? Why did you write a book about reaching them? What are some misconceptions about this generation? What is the defining factor of Gen Z? What is their emotional state? How does technology shape the way they think? How is social media affecting them, especially on sexual issues?  What are the biggest questions being asked by young people today? Evangelicals today are deeply divided over Donald Trump. Some see him as a savior figure, anointed by God to protect the church and make America great again. Others see him more like the antichrist, doing great harm to the nation and bringing embarrassment to the church.  Who’s right?  Might they both have good points?  What should we do to move forward? Dr. Michael Brown, author of Evangelicals at the Crossroads: Will We Pass the Trump Test?  joins Frank as the 2020 election approaches.  Among the questions they address are: Evangelicals have been known as the “values voters” who are always proclaiming, “Character counts! Morality matters!” Have we been hypocritical in our support of Trump? Are Christians losing their ability to witness if they support Trump for president? During the 2016 primaries, you strongly opposed Trump before voting for him vs. Hillary. What changed your mind, and why do you plan to vote for Trump in 2020? Should we be voting more for personality or policy? Jesus scolded the politicians of his day for "neglecting the more important matters of the law” (Mt. 23:23). What are the most important matters of the law upon which we should base our vote in this election? How do the two parties differ on the most important policies? What do you say to pro-lifers who say that health care and poverty and climate change are pro-life issues and they outweigh abortion? You state that “Jesus is my Savior, Trump is my president.” Why is that distinction so important? What should Christians be doing in this election season regardless of who ultimately wins the presidency? If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. What makes you think that your moral views are correct?  If you were a white person in the Southern U.S. in 1840, what would you think of slavery?  If you lived anywhere in the U.S. in 1840, what would you think of abortion?  How about homosexual behavior and same-sex marriage? Are you just a product of your culture?  Is morality just a product of your culture?  Frank delves deep into current events and philosophy to discover what the real truth is, and to expose the selective moralizing that infects cancel culture advocates.  He also proposes what is the most egregious injustice by race and the biggest reason for unequal results by race.  Lots of important ground is covered here.  Don’t miss this one! Jesus of Nazareth is not only the most influential human being in history but God incarnate.  Do you know how to talk with your kids about Him?  You will after you hear this podcast because author and apologist Natasha Crain is Frank’s guest.  Natasha and Frank discuss: Is Jesus God? If Jesus is God, how could He die? Did ancient people believe in miracles because they were more gullible? What did Jesus teach about Hell? Didn’t Jesus tell us not to judge?  If so, how are we to make any decisions? What did Jesus teach about love?  Is it approval? What did the death of Jesus accomplish? Why does it matter if Jesus resurrected? Did the disciples lie about the resurrection story? How is the Christian view of God different? The culture says, “To love me you must approve of what I do.”  Is that true?  Does love require approval? Many so-called Christians are claiming the answer is yes— that we must approve of what people want to do in order to love them.  Frank shows why that’s false and would make real love impossible.   The kind of love that Jesus demonstrated and commanded of us requires that we sacrificially seek the good of the other person, and that requires that we disapprove of harmful behaviors. How can philosophy be more certain than science?  How can morality be more certain than science?  That goes against the common wisdom.  Join Frank as he uses COVID 19, as an illustration, to show we know philosophy and morality at least as well if not better than we know scientific truths.  Since science is built on philosophy in at least nine ways, science is only as good as our philosophy.  Frank also addresses questions on why God created us knowing we would sin, and how to deal with doubts. Is anyone teaching the principles of political freedom, free markets and limited government on high school and college campuses? Charlie Kirk is the founder and president of TurningPoint USA, which has about 2,000 clubs on high school and college campuses. He joins Frank for an enlightening discussion that ranges from how to articulate conservative principles, to Christians and President Trump, to why would God allow evil. Charlie is only 26 years old, but, as you’ll see, he has wisdom and insights beyond his years. Subscribe on iTunes: http://bit.ly/CrossExamined_Podcast rate and review! Thanks!!! Frank gets an update on coronavirus from Dr. Daniel Eichenberger, MD. What is he seeing in the hospitals? How are his patients doing? Why are the predictions so wildly different from model to model? (Because there are so many assumptions for which we don’t have good data. This provides another illustration of why science doesn’t say anything, scientists do). In Dr. Dan’s judgment, what’s the best way forward? (For more, and to ask Dr. Dan questions, join Frank and Dr. Dan on Monday, April 6, at 11:30 am ET on the HOPE ONE live stream at CrossExamined.org, our YouTube channel, or FB page). Frank then further investigates why God allows evil and shows where our true hope comes from. And everyone can have that hope for free! Many are asking the questions, “If there is a good God, why does he allow viruses?  Why doesn’t he stop evil?”  In fact, some are claiming that evil proves that God doesn’t exist. But Frank lays out the case that evil is a powerful argument FOR God.  He cites twenty assumptions that people make when they claim the contrary, and most of these assumptions are best explained by God.  The show also contains important announcements that will give you hope each day during the coronavirus lockdown (Join us for the new Hope One LIVESTREAM each weekday at 11:30 am ET). Dr. Dan Eichenberger, MD, is back to shoot more sanity into a sensationalized situation.  As Christians, we are commanded to obey what our government wants us to do in this situation.  But that doesn’t mean we have to buy into the fear caused by a media that is hyping this entire coronavirus issue.  The media is skewing stats and reporting half-truths.  Dr. Dan corrects the misinformation and gives us a first-hand account of treating a coronavirus patient himself. Here are some of the questions and issues Frank and Dr. Dan discuss: Why is the media not reporting the death rate? What is the death rate? How contagious is this compared to other viruses? You’re treating a coronavirus patient right now. What drugs are working? We hear a lot about flattening the curve. Explain what that is, and will we be successful? California Governor Gavin Newsom thinks 25 million in his state of 40 million will get infected. Is that reasonable? We hear we have fewer hospital beds than in Europe. How does that give the wrong impression? Why is Korea beyond the problem but Italy still has it? What do you think will happen in the US with the infection rate in the coming months? What is your advice to the Christians and non-Christians listening to this? Please share this with others. Subscribe on iTunes: http://bit.ly/CrossExamined_Podcast rate and review! Thanks!!! Is it time to run and hide?  Should you cut yourself off from other people because of the coronavirus?  Is the level of concern reasonable or overblown? Dr. Dan Eichenberger, MD, is Frank’s guest, and he gives a shot of sanity into our sensationalized environment.  Among the questions he and Frank investigate: What is unique about the coronavirus? Is this anything new? How deadly is it? Up to 50,000 people in the US will die of the flu this year. How many from the coronavirus? What will most who get the virus experience? Does it make sense to shut all large gatherings down, including church services? If you were a benevolent dictator of America, what would you do? Frank looks to the scriptures and other Christians (including C.S. Lewis) for how Christians should live in the face of risk.  The truth is, we always live with the threat of death. All of us also have a virus called sin.  Christians know the cure, and people right now might be more open to considering that cure. By Luke Nix Introduction Last month I was alerted to a debate on Justin Brierley's podcast "Unbelievable." This debate was a discussion between a young-earth creationist (Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis) and an old-earth creationist (Jeff Zweerink of Reasons to Believe). This, of course, caught my attention because of my focus on science/faith issues. I decided to take a listen but found myself quite frustrated within just minutes of Justin giving his introductions. Here is a link to the episode for those who would like to hear it for themselves: Do we live on a young or old earth? Ken Ham vs. Jeff Zweerink   Throughout the discussion, Ken Ham presented many strawmen and misrepresentations of Zweerink's old-earth creationist view in order to argue against the view. I recognized many of these myths as ones I've heard over the years that remain popular today despite their falsehood and countless attempts at correction. In today's post, I have compiled twenty of the myths that Ken Ham presented in the "Unbelievable" discussion, and I have provided a short, one-to-three paragraph explanation of how they are false and what the correctly understood old-earth creationist (OEC) position is. Since I have written on many of these topics in the past, I have included links to previous posts where they can offer a more detailed response. My intention for this post is three-fold for both believer and unbeliever. First, for the unbeliever, I want them to understand that the young-earth view is not the only view held by Christians. They do not have to affirm young-earth creationism (YEC) in order to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and remain logically consistent. Second, for the believer, I want them to understand that claiming that a logically consistent Christian must hold to the YEC view is simultaneously a detriment to our evangelism and to worshiping the Father in spirit and in truth (John 4:23). Finally, for those who are honestly investigating the biblical, philosophical, and natural data to resolve this issue (both believer and unbeliever), I pray that this post also serves as a quick stop for addressing many of the myths, strawmen, and other mischaracterizations of the OEC view in a single location. But, before I get to the perpetuated myths of old earth creationism, it is important to recognize where Ken Ham (YEC) and Jeff Zweerink (OEC) hold much common ground in their two views. Even though there are significant differences, there are even more significant commonalities that they can shake hands with each other and give them a hardy "Amen, brother!" I compiled a list a while back that is certainly not comprehensive, but is a large list to see where the differences between YEC and OEC may be fewer than is commonly understood: What Do Young Earth and Old Earth Creationists Agree Upon Regarding Origins? Now, on to the myths of Old Earth Creationism! Myth #1: The debate is not about whether the universe is young or old, it is about whether you believe God's Word or not. Fact: Ken Ham began with this myth. It implies that anyone who disagrees with him on the interpretation of Genesis 1-11 does not believe God's Word. This could not be further from the truth. It is the very belief that God's Word is true and authoritative in the Christian's life that Christians try to understand what it means. In order for a proposition (or collection of propositions, such as the Bible) to be believed and applied to our lives, we need to correctly understand the meaning of the proposition(s). If we did not believe that the collection of propositions that constitute God's Word is true and authoritative over our lives, then we wouldn't bother with trying to understand what the author (and Author) meant to communicate in it. Saying that a Christian, who interprets differently, does not believe God's Word is simply false. The debate is not about belief but rather about correct meaning. For more,
How many times have you heard that there is no evidence for the exodus, particularly no evidence from Egypt?  That claim is demonstrably false!  Archaeologist Dr. Titus Kennedy joins Frank along with Dr. Stephen Meyer of the Discovery Institute to review a list of eight findings, most from Egypt, that corroborate the Bible’s account of the exodus.  In fact, Dr. Kennedy recently traveled to northern Sudan (Egypt in biblical times) to confirm the oldest inscription ever discovered of Yahweh.  It's from 1400 B.C. and sheds amazing light on the exodus. You’ll be able to read and see all of this when Dr. Kennedy’s new book, Unearthing the Bible, is published later this Spring.  But right now, you can hear some of the highlights.  Don’t miss this one.  Fascinating! If God told you to kill someone, what would you do?  Wouldn’t you seek a psychiatrist?  Why did Abraham almost go through with killing his son Isaac?  How did Abraham know God told him and not a demon?  How does the violence in the Old Testament differ from that in the Qur’an?  And does God really give us free choice if it’s either “worship me or go to Hell!” Atheists often challenge Christians with questions like this.  In fact, Frank tells of an atheist asking some of these questions this week at the University of Nebraska.  How does one respond to this and other questions?  Listen to find out! For two thousand years, Christians have understood the death of Jesus to be substitutionary—a sacrifice that paid for our sins. From the earliest creeds to the teaching of the New Testament to the writings of the Church Fathers to today, this has been a core belief of Christianity throughout its history. But in modern times, this idea is being repudiated as “Cosmic Child Abuse.” On today’s show, we are going to address these questions: • What is the historic belief of the Christian church on atonement? • Why does God have wrath and how can that be a good thing? • Is penal substitutionary atonement a late invention of medieval Christians? • If God required the sacrifice of his Son, doesn’t that make him a Divine child abuser? • If I can just forgive people without a sacrifice, why can’t God? Is Christianity a crutch that just makes people feel better? Is Christianity too binary? Too exclusive? Does God want to condemn most of his beautiful creation to a fiery Hell? What if Christianity doesn’t work for you? Doesn’t resonate with you? Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has left Christianity because he believes it is too exclusive, too binary, and that the Christian God wants to condemn most people to a fiery Hell.  Join Frank on Super Bowl weekend as he responds to Aaron’s characterization of Christianity and goes on to point out that all of reality (including football) is binary and that truth is exclusive.  In fact, Frank points out that life is a lot like football in at least seven ways. Here is our list of questions (we might not get to them all, but we will try to give people an overview of what Jews believe today and how we can best reach them for Jesus). What were the major sects of Judaism in the first century? Pharisees Sadducees Essenes Zealots Others Where did they come from and how did they differ in what they believed? When did synagogues begin, and why did they exist during the Temple period? Once the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, how did Judaism change? How can one obey the OT law if the Temple does not exist? What are the current denominations of Judaism and how do they differ from one another? What are the writings outside the OT that Jewish believers think are authoritative?  Talmud? Where did these writings come from and why do Jews believe they are authoritative? How do traditional Jews view the Law, as a burden or a blessing? What are the main Jewish views of the Messiah? What do the majority of Jews think regarding the afterlife?  Why? What do Jewish scholars think about the evidence for the Resurrection?  Alternative theory?  Why would the Jewish writers of the NT invent it? What are the three biggest theological obstacles to a Jewish person accepting Jesus? How do you overcome them? If Jesus is the Messiah, why didn’t he bring in world peace? Sometimes you’ll hear Muslim apologists and other skeptics of Christianity ask, “Where does Jesus say, ‘I am God, worship me’”?  You won’t find Jesus using those words anywhere in the New Testament documents.  Instead, we read Jesus kept calling Himself “The Son of Man.”  On the face of it, that sounds more human than divine.  Is that right?  Did Jesus really claim to be God in words and actions other than “I am God, worship me"?   And if He did claim to be God, why wasn’t He more overt about it?  Why not just come out and say it plainly? Frank invites Crossexamined.org board member, and budding apologist, Ryan Crews to the show to answer those questions and more.  Join them for a fascinating discussion about the self-identity of Jesus, and how to answer objections to the divinity of Jesus. A couple of listeners wrote emails to express their disagreement with some of what Frank said in the show “Why Did Evangelicals Vote for Trump?” In this show Frank responds by investigating Jesus’s rebuke of the Pharisees (the politicians of Israel) in Matthew 23:23 and then by asking three questions: What is the purpose of government? What is your primary reason for choosing a president? Who, of the available candidates, will best fulfill that purpose? As you’ll hear the elephant in the room isn’t Trump and his personality. The primary reason we choose a president has to do with a policy, not personality (although personality is still important). Many people seem confused about what socialism is and whether or not it would be better than America’s capitalistic system.  If there’s one book you should read on this—in fact, it’s one of the best books on economics you’ll read anywhere—is the new edition of Money, Greed and God: The Christian Case for Free Enterprise by Dr. Jay Richards.  On this show, Frank interviews Jay and gets clear answers to these questions: What are Socialism, Marxism, and communism and how do they differ? Shouldn’t Christians be communists based on the early believers communing their resources in the book of Acts? We hear that socialism works in Sweden.  Is that true? Why doesn’t socialism work? Why do you think so many young people are attracted to a failed system? Isn’t capitalism based on greed?  How can Christians be for it? We hear a lot about income inequality. Is that a bad thing, and, if so, what can be done about it? When politicians use the phrase “paying your fair share”, what standard are they using to determine what is fair? Our welfare system actually pays women to have kids out of wedlock.  How do we improve the safety net to prevent that from happening? Why does religious and economic liberty fall together? The two industries in which the government controls significantly are education and health care.  Why are prices high and quality low in those industries? Jesus said that you can’t serve both God and money.   It looks like Chick-fil-A may be sacrificing God for money.  Under pressure from LGBTQ activists, they’ve decided to stop supporting the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  They say they want to focus their charitable giving “in areas of education, homelessness, and hunger.” Newsflash:  That’s exactly what the Salvation Army and FCA do! Now, Chick-fil-A can give or not give to whomever it wants.  But don’t say the reason you’re not giving to the SA or FCA is that you want to focus your giving on exactly what those organizations are already doing! Frank continues his detailed response to a retired attorney who objects to the moral argument.  People often find this the most personally relevant argument for God, and that’s perhaps why atheists often object to it the most.  However, Frank points out, their objections are often due to misunderstandings or misapplication of evolutionary theory to morality.  Listen to this and the first two parts to make sure you’re ready to give a reason for the hope that you have (1 Pet. 3:15). How good is the moral argument?  A retired attorney wrote Frank asserting that we don’t need God for objective morality.  Some of his challenges can be summarized in the following questions: Does the moral argument depend on everyone agreeing on right and wrong? In recent presentations at Fresno State and the University of Arizona, atheists insisted that they just "lack a belief in God", while at the same time rejecting God because they think He is immoral.  How should we respond to this? Some Christians are trying to get the church to accept evolution by putting the word “theistic” in front of it. Is that wise? Is evolution true?  Join Frank and his guest Dr. Stephen Meyer (one of the best people on the planet to discuss this), as they investigate several important questions such as: Theistic evolution:  What is it? If it’s true, where does God intervene? Is it a halfway house between naturalism and ID? Does it contradict the Bible? What about the “god of the gaps” fallacy? (Might evolutionists be committing the "natural law of the gaps" fallacy? How do Christians explain the simple to complex progression of life in the fossil record? What dating methods are used to date fossils? Dr. Meyer contributed significantly to the massive recent book, Theistic Evolution:  A Scientific, Philosophical and Theological Critique.  You should also go to the CrossExamined app and listen to the January 2017 and September 2014 shows with Dr. Meyer.  Those shows are evergreen and lay out the evidence against macroevolution and for intelligent design. Skeptics are quick to claim that there are thousands of Christian denominations.  Is that really true?  If the Bible is true and clear, why is are there so many denominations?   Join Frank as he addresses these four questions: Are just Christians divided? How serious are denominational disagreements? What causes divisions? Is God clear enough?  Along the way, you’ll see that people disagree on almost everything— even science!  The bottom line regarding denominations is that disagreement is more about our resistance to clear doctrine than the existence of clear doctrine. About 70% of young people leave the church after they leave home, and only 3% of churches grow through evangelism.   Why aren’t we sharing the world’s most important truth?   One reason is that we simply don’t know how to share the truth without sounding like a religious nut.  It’s awkward in our culture.   But there’s an easy way to share Christ. Dr. Rice Broocks, author of God’s Not Dead (the book that inspired the movie), joins Frank along with Addison Tweedy of ThinkEvangelism.org, to show you the SALT method of sharing the world’s most important truth. Start a conversation Ask questions Listen Tell the story It’s time to be salt and light with the SALT method.  There’s even an app that will help you do this.  Go to the app store and download “The God Test”.  You can also invite Rice, Addison, or someone from their team, to your church by going to www.ThinkEvangelism.org. In the second half of the show, Frank answers a question about how to answer a scientist who won’t trust the Bible because she says that the Bible teaches that the earth is young. Is it just human opinion? Are values just subjective preferences or is there a really objective standard of rightness, goodness, and justice beyond us? This show delves into questions on morality and others you’ve emailed to Frank such as: What moral standard are political parties using when they address the conflict between so-called LGBTQ rights and religious rights? Do rights come from God or the government? What kind of God does the moral argument prove? Could it be a pantheistic God? What is the true nature of love? Did Moses really write the first five books of the Bible? Frank also responds to a couple of amazing letters, one from a divorced woman and another from a pastor. You don’t want to miss this one! Who is your commanding officer? Is it Jesus or someone else? Is it Jesus or yourself? Is it Jesus or the culture? If you say it’s Jesus, well Jesus said, “If you love me you will keep my commands.” Yet we see people in the church today not only failing to keep his commands but denying they are commands at all, especially when it comes to sexual behavior. Join Frank for completely politically incorrect, but biblically correct, insights into what’s right and true regarding sexual behavior. The show starts with LT Hiroo Onoda, a member of the Japanese imperial army, who refused to believe WWII was over and the continued to fight on a Philippine Island until relieved of his duty in 1974! What relevance does that have? Listen. If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. Jezebel was the most wicked woman in the Bible, a powerful seductress who killed the prophets led Israel into idolatry and immorality, and emasculated men. She was seductive and determined to snuff out the voices coming against her because these voices were calling out for repentance. In 21st century America, Jezebel is not a person, and America is not in the Bible. But it’s as if the spirit of Jezebel is alive again today. The influence of the same demonic force is being felt in throughout America in overwhelming and undeniable ways. Join Frank and Dr. Michael Brown as they uncover and respond to these dark forces by unpacking Mike’s brilliant new book “Jezebel’s War with America.” You’ll hear: Who was Jezebel in the Bible? What is spiritual warfare? Should we really believe in demons and Satan? Why are people now celebrating abortion and the killing of infants? How prevalent are pornography and sexual slavery? (You won’t believe this!) Why is the church silent? Is Trump hatred justified in light of his policies and demeanor? What are some practical things you can do to advance the spirit of Jesus rather than Jezebel? Learn more at Dr. Brown’s website: www.AskDrBrown.org. Are people leaving Christianity for a “new" truth? Does science keep piercing the truth of every religion? Is the Bible full of contradictions? Does God send 4 billion people to hell? Is it really true that no one talks about these things? Join Frank and he responds to these issues raised by Marty Sampsons, the Hillsong worship leader who says that his faith is now on “Incredibly shaky ground.” Frank also highlights some of the comments made about this by John Cooper, of the Christian rock band Skillet. Pray for Mr. Sampson. He says that he is familiar with the work of William Lane Craig, John Lennox, Ravi Zacharias, Michael Licona and Frank Turek. We pray he will get the answers he needs. Frank also addressed a few of the questions you’ve sent in, including: Why did God wait so long to stop the child sacrifice of the Canaanites? How can you follow a God who promises eternal torture? (Does He actually promise that?) Why did God give Adam and Eve access to the tree in the garden? If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org. Is it arrogant to say you’re right? And many other questions. So you think you’re right and everyone else is wrong! You’re arrogant! Is that true? Frank answers many of the questions you’ve emailed to Hello@Crossexamined.org including: Is love possible if atheism is true? Unless you observe it directly, do you have to have faith to believe it? Why pray when these shootings keep happening? How can we love America when its founders were slave owners? Why do we say the God of the Bible is the ground of morality? Is once saved, always saved, true? What about those who fall away? Did God create us, or did we create God? Is it arrogant and pompous to say you’re right and others are wrong? Pastor and author Joshua Harris recently announced that he has divorced his wife and left Christianity. He also has denounced Christian sexual morality. What can we learn from this? Here are some of the questions Frank addresses: · What reasons did he give? Did he cite evidence that Christianity is false? · By leaving Christianity hasn’t he adopted a new faith? · By what standard does he support his new beliefs? · Should we call out false teachers? · According to the Apostle Paul and Thomas Aquinas, how does sexual immorality make us stupid and dismissive of those who disagree with us? · Is this a choice between Christianity and the religion of sex? · How is Mr. Harris being just as exclusionary as the Christians he now blames? We need to pray for Mr. Harris and his family. But all of us have to make a choice: Are you going to trust your life and eternity to the sinless Jesus or the sinful culture? Can science explain everything? Is science an unstoppable force in human development?  Will it provide for all of our needs? How can a scientist believe in God? Are Christians committing the God of the Gaps fallacy when we say the universe, and certain designs in the universe, point to a being like God? Is Christianity at odds with science or is atheism at odds with science? Isn’t it irrational to believe in miracles and the supernatural? What’s the best way to correct mistakes that people make about science and Christianity? There’s nobody on the planet better at answering these questions than Dr. John Lennox of Oxford University. If you get between a mama bear and her cubs, you’ll be in big trouble. Frank interviews Hillary Morgan Ferrer, who joined up with other mama bears, to show you how you can protect your cubs from the trouble generated by the false ideas that are celebrated in our culture. These include: Self-Help Culture: the false belief that we are capable of fixing all of our own problems Naturalism: the false assumption that natural laws alone govern order and complexity Emotionalism: the irrational faith that our emotions can define objective truth and reality Moral Relativism: the dissonance of accepting all beliefs as equally true Progressive Christianity: omitting difficult theology in favor of a more politically correct version Don’t miss Frank and Hillary’s discussion about the five words that our culture has redefined, confusing our children to the point that they are leaving Christianity and making other dangerous choices. According to 180 CEOs, it is… at least the morality based on God’s Good nature. They claim that abortion bans go “against our values and [are] bad for business.” They claim abortion bans are a ban on “equality.” What do they mean by equality? What do they mean by bad? What standard are they using to make such assertions? Was banning slavery bad for business? Are we supposed to base moral decisions on economic results? Join Frank and as he unpacks this hot issue and shows why you shouldn’t be a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. What is happening to our culture’s moral values? Is it really radical relativism: everyone gets to decide what is right in his own eyes? Join Frank to find out that there’s actually a new set of absolutes that our culture is adopting. And these new absolutes are often polar opposites of those grounded in God’s Good nature. For example: The old absolute is purity; the new absolute is promiscuity The old absolute is humility; the new absolute is pride The old absolute is truth; the new absolute is power The old absolute is love; the new absolute is tolerance The old absolute is religious freedom; the new absolute is sexual supremacy And many others. Frank blows the lid off the claim that only Christians or conservatives are trying to impose a moral position. Everyone is! The problem for the proponents of the new absolutes is that they have no objective standard to support their positions. In the last segment, Frank answers questions about the universe coming from nothing, and how to reach apathetic people. Don’t be apathetic about this one. Please listen and share! It is often assumed that the doctrine of the Trinity – the idea that there is one being of God that is comprised of three eternal and co-equal divine persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) – is something that is revealed only in the New Testament. While it is certainly true that the expression of the Trinity reaches its climax in the New Testament, few people (Christians and non-believers alike) are aware that one can find evidence of divine plurality – and even of there being three divine persons – throughout the Old Testament as well. Moreland exposes the self-defeating nature of scientism and equips us to recognize scientism’s harmful presence in different aspects of culture, emboldening our witness to biblical Christianity and arming us with strategies for the integration of faith and science—the only feasible path to genuine knowledge. Decades ago the free speech movement was born in the campus of UC Berkeley. Today the story is the complete opposite. Only a few weeks ago a student senator by the name of Isabella Chow abstained from a vote supporting "transgender rights" and even though she gave a well-reasoned explanation now more than 1,000 people have signed a petition demanding that she resign from the student government. In other words, she's being excluded in the name of inclusion. Frank explains what's happening in the college campuses across the U.S. and why.
The task of defending the truth of Christianity today is becoming increasingly difficult, especially since now technology allows us to "extract" a phrase or two and interpret it any way we want. By Max Andrews ONTOLOGICAL ARGUMENT [1] This is the ontological argument that advocates the existence of an essential, omniscient, omnipotent and morally perfect being: The property of being maximally large is exemplified in some possible world. The property of being maximally large is equivalent, by definition, to the property of being maximally excellent in all possible worlds. The property of being maximally excellent implies the properties of omniscience, omnipotence, and moral perfection. A universal property is one that is exemplified in all possible worlds or none. Any property that is equivalent to a property held in all possible worlds is a universal property. Therefore, there exists a being that is essentially omniscient, omnipotent, and morally perfect. Now, this is a very technical argument... So, let's try to make some sense of this: Defense of Premise 1. When I refer to a possible world I am referring only to a possible logical state of affairs. The first premise merely states that the property of being maximally large is logically possible – that is, that no contradiction obtains. Defense of Premise 2. Premise 2 outlines the logical equivalence of maximum greatness with maximum excellence. Defense of Premise 3. Premise three follows from the logical equivalence located in premise 2. Defense of Premise 4. Premise 4 presents a disjunctive: either the universal property X is valid in all worlds (hence its universality) or it is necessarily a contradiction, and is impossible to obtain. Defense of Premise 5. The fifth premise asserts the first disjunctive stated, which is simply that if a property holds in all possible worlds, then it is a universal property. Therefore, if a universal property holds in some possible world, then this universal property holds in all possible worlds. Logic does not vary across possible worlds. Defense of the Conclusion. Therefore, if these universal properties hold in all possible worlds, they are valid in the actual world. This argument also does not "define" God to exist. Rather, it is an a priori argument that considers the mere possibility of a being with maximally great properties. This modal form of the argument shows that if a being with maximally great and maximally excellent properties is possible, then that being must exist. Anselm's ontological argument Anselm's argument can be formulated as follows: God exists in the understanding. God is a being. If X exists only in the understanding and is a possible being, then X could have been greater. Let us suppose that God only exists in the understanding. God could have been greater (Dado 2, 4, 3). God is a being of whom nothing greater is possible. So a being for which no greater being is possible is therefore a being for which no greater being is possible. Since 4 gives rise to a contradiction 4 must be false. God exists not only in the understanding. Therefore, God exists in reality. Existence in reality is an aggrandizing property. The argument is a reductio ad absurdum . To prove X assume ¬X. Show how ¬X leads to a patent contradiction or falsehood. Gaunilo's objection Gaunilo proposes the idea of a perfect island. “I can conceive of a perfect island so this perfect island must exist.” The problem with this is that the island could, in reality, always be better. How many palm trees? How big is the island? How good is the climate? Inevitably, when you start adding all the big properties together to form the island you get Anselm’s idea of God. Plantinga's modal ontological argument This is the formulation of Plantinga's Argument: It is possible for a maximally great being (God) to exist. If it is possible for a maximally great being to exist, then a maximally great being exists in some possible world. If a maximally great being exists in some possible world, then it exists in all possible worlds.

Frank thoroughly examines a comment by Rachel Bird posted on the New York Times comments section of Tim Keller's latest article. He dissects the comment and answers the following question: Is it wrong to impose religious beliefs in politics? Here's the comment by Rachel: "As a strong believer in the separation of Church and State, I believe that religion has no place in political discourse. I am sick and tired of so-called Christians and other faith-based groups. using their religious beliefs to influence public policy. You want to pray. Fine. Go to church. You want to live your life in accordance with some religious belief. Fine. Do it in the privacy of your home. But, do not use your religious belief to argue that your right to free speech is infringed upon when you are asked to bake a cake for a same sex couple, provide birth control under your company's health insurance plan, deny science, etc. In short, do not use your religious beliefs to deny my right to live as I see fit. To influence public policy which denies millions of women, minorities, and children, access to health care, abortion, voting rights, civil rights. I am simply fed up with the hypocrisy to the so-called religious people in this country preaching to the rest of us who simply want to live our lives freely and openly without the burden of dealing with someone's else's gods foisted upon us." -Rachel Bird

Once upon a time there was a version of our faith that was practically . . . irresistible. But that was then. Today we preach, teach, write, and communicate as if nothing has changed.  As if “The Bible says it,” still settles it. It’s time to hit pause on much of what we’re doing and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and humanly speaking, little chance of survival. What did they know that we don’t? What made their faith so compelling, so defensible, so irresistible? Buckle up . . . you’re about to find out! Frank interviews Andy Stanly about his new book Irresistible. Here's what Frank had to say about the book: "“Warning: This book will set you and your ministry back—back to the first century and the approach to advancing the gospel modeled by Jesus and the apostles. Andy reminds us that the resurrection was at the center of the first-century apologetic. Then he challenges twenty-first century believers to reclaim it as the center of ours as well. I agree with Andy—this approach changed the world once. I’m convinced it could do so again. Read and apply now!”—Frank Turek

Does belief in God make sense of the world? Or does reality itself point to God’s absence? Is God real or is he a product of human minds? By Wintery Knight I want to draw your attention to a talk on “Vision in Life” given by Dr. William Lane Craig. Dr. Craig is the ablest defender of the Christian faith operating today. He has done formal academic debates with all of the best-known atheists on major university campuses in front of thousands of university students. It turns out that he owes a lot of his success to his amazing wife Jan. The MP3 file is here. (32 minutes) This talk was Dr. Craig’s chapel address to Biola University students. About 11 minutes into the talk, Bill describes what happened after he finished his Bachelor’s degree at Wheaton: And so I joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ for 2 years and was assigned to Northern Illinois University. And that was where I met my wife Jan. She was a graduate of the University of North Dakota where she had come to faith in Christ. And she had a similar vision for her life of evangelism and discipleship. And as we worked at NIU together, she with gals and I with the guys, leading students to Christ and discipling them to walk with the Lord, we fell in love. And we decided that we would be more effective if we joined forces and became a team. So their reason for getting together was because they thought that they would be more effective in evangelism and discipleship if they worked as a team. It is at this point in the talk where Bill begins to explain just how Jan molded him into the lean, mean debating machine that travels the world striking terror into the hearts of atheists. Bill’s first story about Jan occurs early after their marriage while he is working on his first Master's degree at Trinity: And it was also at that time that I began to see what an invaluable asset the Lord had given me in Jan. I remember I came home from classes one day and found her at the kitchen table with all the catalogs and schedules and papers spread out in front of her and she said, “look! I’ve figured out how you can get two Masters degrees at the same time that it would normally take to get one! All you have to do is take overloads every semester, go to all full-time summer school and do all these other things, and you can do two MAs in the time it takes to do one!” And I thought, whoa! Are you sure you really want to make the commitment it takes to do this kind of thing? And she said, “Yeah! Go for it!” And it was then I began to see that God had given me a very special woman who was my supporter – my cheerleader – and who really believed in me. And as long as she believed in me, that gave me the confidence to dream bigger dreams, and to take on challenges that I had never thought of before. In an article on his website, he talks about how Jan encouraged him to do his first Ph.D.: As graduation from Trinity neared, Jan and I were sitting one evening at the supper table in our little campus apartment, talking about what to do after graduation. Neither of us had any clear leading or inclination of what we should do next. So Jan said to me, “Well if money were no object, what would you really like to do next?” I replied, “If money were no object, what I’d really like to do is go to England and do a doctorate under John Hick.” “Who’s he?” she asked. “Oh, he’s this famous British philosopher who’s written extensively on arguments for the existence of God,” I explained. “If I could study with him, I could develop a cosmological argument for God’s existence.” But it hardly seemed a realistic idea. The next evening at supper Jan handed me a slip of paper with John Hick’s address on it. “I went to the library today and found out that he’s at the University of Birmingham in England,” she said. “Why don’t you write him a letter and ask him if you can do a doctoral thesis under him on the cosmological argument?” What a woman! So I did, and to our amazement and delight, Professor Hick wrote back saying he’d be very pleased to supervise my doctoral work on that subject.

Dr. Michael Brown and Frank answer the following Jewish Objections to Jesus: • Isn’t the Messiah supposed to build the third temple? Jesus didn’t do that. • The Messiah is supposed to gather all the Jews back to the land of Israel and usher in peace. Jesus didn’t do that. • Doesn’t the NT take OT prophecies out of context, like Isaiah 7:14? • What do Jews say about a child being born whom will be Mighty God (Isa. 9:6)? • Isn’t the Suffering Servant in Isaiah 53 Israel? http://realmessiah.com/
In 2000, biologist Jonathan Wells took the science world by storm with Icons of Evolution, a book showing how biology textbooks routinely promote Darwinism using bogus evidence— in Zombie Science, Wells asks a simple question: If the icons of evolution were just innocent textbook errors, why do so many of them still persist? Science has enriched our lives and led to countless discoveries. But now, Wells argues, it’s being corrupted. Empirical science is devolving into zombie science, shuffling along unfazed by opposing evidence. Don't miss this fantastic interview with Dr. Wells about his new book, Zombie Science! The reliability of the Gospels is under attack. Skeptics seek to undermine the story of Jesus Christ by saying we cannot really trust the Gospel. "They were not written by eye-witnesses," "They contradict each other," "They have historical errors." Those who have not studied this subject may be caught off-guard and begin to lose the footing of their faith. Frank interviews one of the leading scholars in the subject the Distinguished Professor of New Testament from Denver Seminary, Dr. Craig Blomberg! He shares some great insights on the topic during this podcast and tells us how to learn more about it directly from him on his new Online Course. Learn more about his online course here.
By Steve Williams  “I can see the fingerprints of God when I look at you I can see the fingerprints of God and I know its true you’re a masterpiece that all creation quietly applauds and you’re covered with the fingerprints of God” ~from Fingerprints of God, by Stephen Curtis Chapman The common scientific view of the “hardware of life” (that is, the physical components of living systems) is, as Biologist Richard Dawkins puts it, “the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.” (The Blind Watchmaker, 1986). Unfortunately, Dawkins (like many others in his field) has succumbed to a logically fallacious assumption that a supernatural explanation is not within the “pool of live options” to explain this appearance of design. Why not? Well, to summarize the common opinions of materialists like Dawkins, it’s “not science”. But what is “Science”? Louis Pasteur once said “Religions, philosophies, atheism, materialism, or its opposite–none of these is relevant to the matter…I might even add that, scientifically speaking, I am indifferent to them all. The question is purely one of fact”. In other words, science should be “the un-biased search for truth” without philosophical preconceptions. That definition was always the ancient understanding of the term. Since the so-called “Enlightenment” that swept through Europe in the 1700’s, and especially since the proposal of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution in 1859, however, intellectual activists have been trying to add the qualifying concept of “within naturalistic explanations” to the definition. What that means, in effect, is the addition of a bias to the search for truth. This bias first “got its legs” from the writings of an apparently bitter atheistic Scottish philosopher named David Hume in the 1700’s. Hume proposed a set of reasons why the supernatural should be ruled be ruled out of consideration as an explanatory mechanism. Not long afterwards, these reasons were shown to be fallacious (we’ll examine this in a later chapter), but at the time, it was as if Europe was eager to unfetter itself from religion, and atheism blossomed somewhat throughout the continent. Most modern philosophers (even agnostic ones) find Hume’s arguments to be almost laughably illogical, but many atheists unknowingly cite him today as if he was “the Christ” of their belief system. For a full-length treatment of this subject, see John Earman’s book Hume’s Abject Failure, but suffice it to say for the moment that modern humankind has nowhere near a broad enough scope of reality to eliminate the possibility of the supernatural. To the contrary, there are many things in our experience that defy naturalistic explanations. The philosophical name of the most common scientific form of atheism is “Materialism”, and it claims that not only is there no God, but that there is nothing even like God in the universe. Although it has taken root within the Biological sciences, it has done so to a much lesser extent within Astronomy, Philosophy, and Physics. Many Americans would probably be surprised to know that polls show that the percentage of PhD’ed scientists overall who identify themselves as Christians and who go to church is roughly the same as the percentage in the population at large. Unfortunately, the small minority who identify themselves as atheists is much louder and more aggressive though, so they exert a disproportionate influence on the media, academic standards committees and the like. Luckily for all who respect unbiased inquiry, many Philosophers who are experts in logic by definition (logic being a subset of Philosophy), have objected vociferously, especially in the past 40 years, to this effort, and have recognized that the scientific method is at stake. As I wrote before, it seems that the key element that catalyzed this mindset since the late 1800’s is Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Biologists became so enamored with it over the years that t...

Suppose that there were no scientific evidence whatsoever for the existence of God, would that disprove God? Or would that necessarily make it irrational to believe in God?   I argue that it wouldn’t – such an overly-skeptical view reveals a flawed epistemology (theory of knowledge). One who makes such a claim is apparently adhering to a strong form of scientism, the view that science is the only source of knowledge. For, there are many non-scientific reasons for belief in God, such as: Philosophical arguments- such as the moral argument, the Leibnizian cosmological argument, etc. Fulfilled prophecies Historical evidence for the resurrection Religious experience - it’s at least possible in principle that God could reveal Himself through experiences that would justify belief in Him for that person even if not necessarily for others without this evidence The purpose of this blog is not to explore these non-scientific arguments but merely to point out that one cannot call belief in God irrational without also refuting these types of non-scientific arguments. Explore the hypertext links for sampling if you’re unfamiliar with these arguments. The claim that science is the only source of knowledge is self-refuting – it’s a philosophical claim that cannot be scientifically demonstrated so if science is the only source of knowledge one could not rationally affirm it. Dr. Turek’s Roadrunner Tactic (of applying a claim to itself) reveals this pretty clearly. Most philosophers have long since abandoned this overly narrow epistemology, but unfortunately, some scientists still hold to it. Too often skeptics point to prominent scientists who are atheists as though that somehow shows that belief in God must be irrational. I confess that I myself, unfortunately,y went through a period of doubts in the late 1990's in part because of this fear of how so many of these smart scientists could think that there is no evidence of God. But is science really even the appropriate discipline for determining God’s existence? I later came to realize the folly of assuming scientists are best-suited for evaluating evidence for God. Sure a disproportionate number of really intelligent people are scientists but are they really trained so as to be able to best evaluate potential evidence for God? Clearly, they are not trained to evaluate any of the non-scientific evidence I listed above. Many of the most vocal atheistic scientists such as Krauss, Dawkins, and Hawking make numerous philosophical mistakes. Moreover, science is generally defined such that no appeal to the divine is even considered – this is known as methodological naturalism. Thus, both the nature of the knowledge taught to scientists as well as the methodology they learn for evaluating evidence are not well-suited for evaluating the breadth of evidence and arguments about God. Dr. Ed Feser, who has been on the CrossExamined podcasts here and here, has an excellent rebuttal to scientism. He critiques Alex Rosenberg’s argument that science can show that God doesn’t exist. First, here is Feser’s summary of Rosenberg’s argument: 1. The predictive power and technological applications of physics are unparalleled by those of any other purported source of knowledge. 2. Therefore what physics reveals to us is all that is real. Feser goes on to explain: “How bad is this argument?  About as bad as this one: 1. Metal detectors have had far greater success in finding coins and other metallic objects in more places than any other method has. 2. Therefore what metal detectors reveal to us (coins and other metallic objects) is all that is real. Metal detectors are keyed to those aspects of the natural world susceptible of detection via electromagnetic means (or whatever).  But however well they perform this task -- indeed, even if they succeeded on every single occasion they were deployed -- it simply wouldn’t follow for a moment that there are no aspects of the natural world...
