Description: What do happy accidents, deconstructing songs, and tools like stem splitters have to do with leveling up your production skills? My guest today is Marc Matthews, a UK-based producer, mixing and mastering engineer, EDM artist, and host of Inside The Mix podcast. He works with independent artists to craft impactful, clear tracks and shares practical insights from his experience as both an artist and engineer. In this episode, we dive into Marc’s journey from learning guitar and metal bands to mastering EDM production. We discuss his approach to building a workflow, selecting sounds, and the benefits of deconstructing commercial tracks using stem splitters for education rather than copying. Marc emphasizes starting with the right foundational sounds, like choosing the perfect kick and bass, and then refining through arrangement and mixing techniques like side-chaining and EQ.We got into the importance of practical tools - such as Serum, Arturia Pigments, and even Behringer synths - and how experimenting with synthesis can inspire creativity but needs to be coupled with structured composition. Marc also shares insights on working with vocal topliners through platforms like Vocalizer, building collaborations, and managing royalty splits with agreements from platforms like Songtrust or PPL. Podcasting as a way to learn, grow, and build a catalog was a big theme, along with strategies for navigating DAWs efficiently, controlling your workflow with shortcuts, and using apps like SteerMouse for cross-application controls. Finally, we talk about balancing creative freedom with technical discipline - knowing when to trust your instincts versus when to scientificize your process - and the value of just starting now, with whatever tools and time you have.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2YOHUdnp0mmVHoPiGtseiA?si=PcwvTlCoTA2bcNO3NGeopAIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/577
