Ryan was the only friend who actually showed up during Ari's seven months of backpacking, and he wanted Machu Picchu the hard way: a five-day trek through the Andes. After getting "ameliorated" in Cusco on guinea pig, rally car races, and rented Denali boots, the boys set off with a Dutch couple they rename Bjorn and Susan. Then come altitude sickness, food poisoning, a dead horse at 15,000 feet, a cliffside escape from landslides, and mystery lights in the woods across from Machu Picchu.
