We’re doing something different today! There’s no Steph or Laura this week - instead we handed the mics to their husbands Josh & Dalton and Dr Zac Seidler - the Global Director of Men’s Health Research at Movember. Earlier this year Movember published their ‘More Than A Provider’ report based on a survey of 1,216 Australian fathers with at least one child aged between 0-10 years old. The report examined the intersections between identity, health & health service for men as they transition to fatherhood.  In this special episode of the podcast, Zac sat down with Josh & Dalton to discuss the report and their own experiences of fatherhood, including who they can reach out to for support and how their relationships with their own fathers has impacted their parenting style. In this episode, Steph sits down with friend Nicole Maycroft to share about how anxiety & worry shows up in their lives and how they handle it. Plus - how they’ve both navigated going from one to two, moving house (and state) during pregnancy, and trying again after loss. This episode was supported by Elevit. If you’re an Australian millennial woman, you know Tammin Sursok. She played Dani Sutherland in Home & Away in the early 2000’s and Jenna Marshall in Pretty Little Liars. Tammin has been in the public eye since she was a teenager. Faced with that pressure, Tammin struggled with eating disorders throughout her teen years and early 20’s.  Now Tammin has two daughters. Her experience with eating disorders informs the way she speaks to them about food and their bodies in the hope that they will never go through what she did. In this episode Steph sits down with Tammin to learn about how eating disorders took over Tammin’s life, becoming a mum and adjusting to her postpartum body, and how she responds when one of her daughters calls herself fat. Dr Billy Garvey is a developmental paediatrician and a senior specialist at one of Australia’s largest tertiary paediatric hospitals. He has over 20 years experience working with families and children, and training other professionals on how to work with children, plus he’s the dad of two little ones, so he's able to see first-hand how his research and advice plays out in real life. Billy’s book ‘Ten Things I Wish You Knew About Your Child’s Mental Health’ takes the lessons Billy has learned from two decades working with families and children, including behaviour, social skills, attachment, respect, depression, anxiety and self-esteem. In this episode Steph speaks with Billy about the biggest misconceptions people have about children’s behaviour and mental health, what to do before, during, and after a child erupts, why parents shouldn’t tell children “it’s okay” when they’re having a meltdown, emotional regulation and how parents can model it for their children, the warning signs for anxiety and depression in children, and why parents looking after their own mental health should be their number one priority. A must listen ahead of the women's Olympic marathon marathon this weekend! In the heat of the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Tokyo Games, Gen Gregson fell and ruptured her achilles tendon. As devastating as it was that Gen’s steeplechase career was over, and her return to elite sport was uncertain, Gen saw an opportunity to fulfil another dream: becoming a mum. Gen gave birth to her son Archer in June 2022. At 3 weeks postpartum Gen started jogging again and at 13 months postpartum she ran her debut marathon on the Gold Coast Marathon in a time of 2:28, making her the second-fastest debut marathon for an Australian woman. Gen took another two minutes off her marathon time to qualify for the Paris Games where she will compete this Sunday. In this episode, Gen sits down with Steph to share her story of returning to elite sport following major surgery and childbirth, how she balances family life with training for the Olympics, the village that supports her in this pursuit, including her husband Ryan Gregson who’s also a marathon runner, and why being a mum makes her a better marathon runner. Mandy Richardson is a child development and early parenting specialist and the creator of Raise Toddlers: a platform created to inspire and equip parents with the skills and tools they need to raise children from birth to six years old. Very importantly, Mandy is not anti-screens! But when she notices her three daughters have spent too much time on screens, she introduces a screen reset: time away from screens to bring them back down to baseline. In this episode, Mandy joins Steph from Perth to discuss the impact of screen time and how to implement a screen reset if you think it could suit your family. They discuss what is happening in children’s brains when they’re watching a screen, how screens can impact a child’s behaviour and how to reintroduce screens after the screen reset has finished. You can’t be what you can’t see and for most of us (for better or worse) our only parental role models will be the people that raised us. So are we destined to raise our children in the same way that our parents raised us? And if you want to parent differently…how can you unlearn the way you were brought up? Lael Stone is a speaker, educator and author who helps adults understand the imprints we learned in childhood that shape how we understand the world and how we parent. In this conversation Steph and Lael speak about parenting acting as a mirror to your own experiences, the importance of having enough support to parent in the way you want, and Lael offers words of encouragement to any parent thinking they’re not doing a good enough job. Jess Quinn was one of our very first KICPOD guests way back in 2019. This week Jess returns, but this time for KICBUMP, after welcoming her first daughter Marla into the world last November.  In our first conversation with Jess she shared her story of childhood cancer and having one of her legs amputated when she was nine years old. In this episode, Steph and Jess talk about Marla and the reality of parenting as an amputee. Jess shares how she gained confidence in her body through pregnancy, her birth story, learning to parent with her husband Todd and how they’re finding their feet with newborn life, the things she can’t do for Marla with one leg, and all the things that Marla will gain from having a mum who’s an amputee.  Check out Jess' fave body positive books for kidsBodies Are Cool - Tyler FederLove Your Body - Jessica SandersHer Body Can - Katie CrenshawEverybody Has A Body - Molli Jackson Ehlert FOLLOW US KICPOD @kicpod on InstagramJess jessicaemilyquinn on InstagramSteph Claire Smith @stephclairesmith on Instagram, @steph_claire_smith on TikTokJoin our virtual mothers' group in the the KICBUMP Facebook group. Jess Sanders is a social worker and children’s author. Her latest book ‘You Can Do Hard Things - A Little One’s Guide For Not Giving Up’ helps children see disappointments as opportunities. A growth mindset empowers children to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. From building blocks, to learning times tables, children are constantly faced with difficulties, and a growth mindset helps children believe they are capable of overcoming these difficulties, if not today, then one day. In this conversation, Steph speaks with Jess about what a growth mindset actually means, how parents can model a growth mindset themselves, why children should experience failure and disappointment and what they can learn from it, not trying to “fix” our children’s emotions and giving children the tools to build their self-confidence. This episode is tough but a really important conversation for every parent and person with young people in their lives. Grooming refers to an older child or adult establishing a trusting relationship with a child or their family to sexually abuse or exploit the child. The average age that a child is abused is 6.8 years old and 90% of children who are abused know their abuser.  To help make sense of it all, Steph speaks with Jayneen Sanders. Jayneen is a mum of three, author and educator who writes children’s books on body boundaries, respect, consent, body safety, feelings and emotions. In this episode, they speak about what grooming actually is, the red flags parents can look out for, how parents can live with the fear of letting their children out of their sights, what to do if you suspect your child is being groomed, and what support exists. If you haven’t been to kinder since you were IN kinder, you’ve probably forgotten what it’s all about and what the big deal is. So as Harvey gets closer to kindergarten age, Steph speaks with early childhood consultant Catharine Hydon about all things kindergarten.  They talk the big things, like: what do our kids actually learn at kinder, how does it help them transition to school, and how is my kid developing emotionally and social at that age? And the little things, like: how early do I have to enrol, dealing with tears at drop off, and does my kid need to be fully toilet trained to attend?  This episode of KICBUMP is sponsored by the Department of Education Victoria. Katie Lolas is beloved by her online community who she shares her life with. When Katie’s sister, Nadia passed away unexpectedly in 2021 at 31 years old, Katie’s community grieved alongside her. But Katie had another job to do: she was 35 weeks pregnant and in three weeks’ time, she was due to deliver her first child, Harper, via C-section. When Katie was trying to grieve one life changing event, she was also trying to celebrate another life changing event, and trying not to feel guilty for doing one or the other. In this episode, Katie speaks with Steph all about of it.  They discuss how Katie learned that Nadia had passed away, the pressure to feel happy for having a healthy baby while she was grieving her sister, being diagnosed with depression and the support she received to get through it, how she remembers Nadia now, and what life is like with her three-year-old Harper and nine-month-old Eli. The decision to have kids is one of the biggest ones we’ll ever make. Last year Laura opened up about this decision, weighing up what it would mean to her career and her identity, what scares her about having kids, and her fear of leaving it too long. We know this is a question on so many people’s minds, which is why we want to create a podcast miniseries asking the questions we can’t find anywhere else. In today’s special episode, Laura is back on KICBUMP to share her plans for a new miniseries exploring the decision to have kids from multiple perspectives, from people who didn’t want kids and had them, to people who did want kids and never had them, how they decided and how they feel about it now. And we want to hear from you: what do you want to hear in the miniseries? Who do you want to hear from? What’s holding you back? What pushed you to make a decision? Kim was 27 weeks pregnant with her first daughter when she noticed a tiny amount of bleeding. After almost a week in hospital, and a traumatic birth experience, Kim gave birth to Elsie. Elsie then spent 11 weeks in the NICU and in that time, Kim and her husband Greg learned that Elsie had suffered a brain injury through pregnancy or birth and she was given a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. In this episode, Kim shares her story with Steph: her mostly straightforward pregnancy with Elsie, Elsie’s traumatic birth, their NICU stay and how it felt to finally hold Elsie for the first time, learning of Elsie’s brain injury, finding support online from parents of children with disabilities, and the decision to have a second baby. Thanks to Kic community member Kim for reaching out with her story. We hope her story helps other parents going through similar things feel less alone. Taryn created the documentary ‘Embrace’ to help us change the way we think about our bodies and ‘Embrace Kids’ to teach 9-14 year olds how to respect, move and nourish their bodies. Kids learn their first messages about food, movement and body image from their parents but parents can’t control what messages their kids learn outside the home. This is where Body Blocks comes in: a free learning resource for childhood educators. In this moving conversation, Taryn joins Steph to discuss how Taryn has reframed the parts of her body that changed through childbirth and feeding 4,000 meals to her children, the impact that parents’ and teachers’ language can have on kids for years afterwards, and the importance of sending positive messages to kids even if you don’t always feel them inside. For support, contact Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636 * If you've been a KICPOD listener for a while, you may have heard the unbelievable story of two sisters Rachel & Hannah who escaped attempted human trafficking back in 2016. In today's KICBUMP episode, Hannah shares her incredible story of how her frightening pregnancy diagnoses ended up giving her the beautiful gift of her now 3 year old daughter Vienna. During her pregnancy, Hannah's baby was diagnosed with Amniotic Band Sydnrome, and despite doctors suggesting multiple times that she shouldn't follow through with the pregnancy, Hannah stuck to what she knew was right. In this episode, she speaks about what it was like hearing the news that her baby would be born without her right arm, how she came to the decision to go ahead with her pregnancy, and how she wants to raise her daughter to feel empowered rather than limited by her disability.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Em Rusciano wears just about every hat - she's a comedian, podcast host, writer, TV presenter, singer and former radio host, but on top of all of that she's also a mum of 3. All of her children happen to be neurodiverse, and she herself was recently diagnosed with ADHD and Autism. Em has shockingly faced public criticism for opening up about her diagnosis, with people claiming that it's for attention. In today's episode, we discuss why this is ludicrous and why we should be normalising the topic, helping mums of neurodiverse children feel more supported and also feel more comfortable getting tested themselves. Steph became friends with Tracey through their mother's group - you may remember her from a previous KICBUMP episode titled "Postpartum, poop and prams" with another friend  Emma. In today's episode, Steph wanted to chat to Tracey about something that almost none of us have experienced but so many of us are curious about or at the very least fascinated by - home births. Tracey's story is just incredible. She birthed her 4 month old son Airlie at home (which was planned), but without any midwives present (which was definitely unplanned)! Hear how she educated herself on home births, what she equipped herself with in the lead up, how she attained her midwives and her advice for any mums looking at this as an option for their birth plan. And on another note, we love hearing your 'Toddler Tantrum Tales'! If your toddler has cracked it over something hilarious (like not being allowed to eat the dog food or crying over some broken eggs that they sat on) please send yours in to us @kicpod on Instagram. Voice notes and written messages welcome! 🥰 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What an incredible story Lisa Messenger and her bestie Sarah Megginson share - one that initially started with heartache, where Lisa tried for a baby for 8 years and did 16 unsuccessful rounds of IVF, then becoming a magical story where during a discussion about Lisa's struggles, Sarah offered the most selfless thing a person could offer - to carry Lisa's baby for her! With Sarah now nearly 6 months pregnant, she and Lisa share in today's episode everything that we're curious to know - the process of surrogacy, how it all came about, how it feels being pregnant with someone else's baby, and what Lisa is going to tell her unborn son when he's older. Their friendship and pregnancy journey truly is something special, and you can follow it all on their shared Instagram page @mummyatlast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's KICBUMP episode kicks off with a Harvey update from Steph, where you will not BELIEVE what he was holding in his hand. It left producer Mandy gobsmacked and Steph face palming! We then hear from the amazing Mel Wells - an Embodied Leadership and Intimacy Coach trained in Holistic Sex, Love and Relationships, Eating Psychology and Holistic Health. When pregnant with her now 7 month old baby Sky, Mel's plan was to have a home birth with no intervention. But when he arrived at just 30 weeks, Mel's plan had to quickly pivot to something she initially wanted to avoid completely. In today's episode, she explains how giving birth means surrendering completely and trusting western medicine even when it may not always be your first preference. She also shares her wisdom about the importance of sex and intimacy in a relationship when becoming a parent. Although every woman's pregnancy and birth story is different, one thing most mums can agree on is that a man will never truly understand what it's like to go through childbirth - and so for a lot of mums, this includes their partner.   Former AFLW player & Survivor star Moana Hope is in the unique position where she knows exactly what it's like from both perspectives! Her wife Isabella Carlstrom gave birth to their daughter Svea in 2020, then in June this year Moana gave birth to their son Ahi.   In this episode of KICBUMP, Moana not only shares her fascinating story of forming her beautiful family, but also generously tells her birth story for the first time.   KIC UPDATES KICBUMP will soon be branching off to be its own separate podcast.
