THE SELF PORTRAIT GOSPEL IS A PODCAST AS WELL AS AN ONLINE PUBLICATION THAT FOCUSES ON THE VARIOUS CREATIVE APPROACHES AND ATTITUDES OF THE MUSIC WE FIND ENLIGHTENING AND MOST MOVING. THE ARTIST'S UNIQUE AND VAST APPROACH TO LIFE AND THEIR CRAFT IS BOUNDLESS AND WE'RE ON A MISSION TO SHARE THOSE STORIES THE BEST WE CAN.

Having first met the late great David "Cloud" Berman sometime in Dallas in 1984, poetic painter Chris Kysor has been an incredibly important individual in the world of the Silver Jews before they even lifted off the ghostly ground in the 1990s. Friends since high school, Kysor tells us about his dear friend, and poet, the only way he knows how: through his intimate connection and precious friendship with one of the greatest artists of our time. From local concerts where they saw the Cure together, and several of the punk pioneers that were coming through the "Big D" in the 1980s, to Berman's days briefly spent in Austin, the two would eventually reconnect in 1998 while Kysor was living and working in Brooklyn as a painter, and Berman during the Jews' recording of their definitive album, "American Water". The story goes that Berman visited the artist's studio where he first encountered the unnamed painting, which he instantly became transfixed by, and would later call Kysor to ask if they could use it for their next album. Stunned by his dear friend's interest, Kysor happily agreed, and the rest is harmonious history. Neither of the two knew what was coming their way, both personally as well as their careers, but it's the stuff legends are made of. Kysor breaks down the atmospheric anecdotes that make this episode so enduring and a delight to hear, just how "American Water" became so intensely iconic from the music to its fanous cover.
Logtime Providence-based rockers Deer Tick have been releasing aggressively atmospheric, sonically seductive music for over two decades now. Since forming in the winter of '04 as a duo dynamic for McCauley's melodies, the group has spiritually secured a poetic place in the creative cosmos, alongside their peers and critical contemporaries. We had the chance to sit down with McCauley to talk about the band's brand new album, "Coin-O-Matic", which is set for release on ATO Records in early June, and the thriving traditions, historical harmonies, and memories of the mafia that once thrived in New England at that time. With everything that's going on in this country, the madness and the cruelty, Deer Tick hace risen from the artistic ashes since the release of the their 2023 album "Emotional Contracts" to serve the people a delightful dose of splendid songwriting and self-produced purity, but above all, superb storytelling.
Hailing from Claremont, California, a suburban city in eastern Los Angeles County, Henry Branes (Ranger Barnes, Enid Snarb) first began connecting with the meditative melodies of music through his incredibly talented parents. With a mother who played guitar and a father who was a member of the local collective The Real Jazz Band, Barnes' exciting enviroment eventually led him down the endless path of folklore, melodic mythology, and traditional tunes. Having participated in several groups in grade school and high school, the young industrious musician began to hone his craft during the cultural crossover from rock and roll to punk in the late 1970s, and decided to combine the two in one liberating location, and hasn't looked back since. In this first episode of "When I Didn't Have A Home," An Amps For Christ Podcast, Barnes takes us all the way back to the biblical beginning when he was born in La Verne before relocating to Mexico with his family and siblings, for a few years before returning to California, where he would eventually begin to connect with the spiritual sounds, and tonal textures that would later go on to define the visceral vibrations, and enviromentally epic messeages of LA-based "power violence" trailblazers Man Is The Bastard, and later Amps For Christ. Join us as we unpack the unique universe of all things AFC on this season's first episode, "The End Is The Beginning and The Beginning Is The End", where we initiate the first peel of the Glass Onion before discovering what lurks within its cosmic center.
Born and raised in Princeton, New Jersery, Wilkes relocated to the West Coast with his family, where he would go on to earn a BA at UC Santa Cruz, before eventually deciding to study screenwriting at the American Film Institute (AFI). Having worked as a screnwriter on such cult classics as 1994's "Airheads" (Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, Chris Farley, and Michael Richards) and "The Stoned Age" (Michael Kopelow, Bradford Tatum, and Clifton Collins Jr.), which was released this past Monday as an exclusive cult collectible Blu-Ray in celebration of 420, Wilkes officially made his semi-autobiographical coming of age tale "Glory Daze", starring a pre-Kevin Smith Ben Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and French Stewart, and has since paved way as a legend in an intense industry that is changing quicker than you, and I could ever fathom. While combining the existential elements of youth, relationships, career, and the brave balance of life, Wilkes may be your new favorite obsession when it comes to cult comedies, and subliminal stoner stories. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with the veteran screenwriter/director to discuss the old glory daze of long-lasting youth in the 1990s, films legends such as Spielberg, Fincher, and Soderbergh, the never-ending narrative of nostalgia, the impact of AI, and much more.
Remaining a romantically revolutionary voice among his peers and contemporaries for nearly two decades, Durham, North Carolina-based singer, songwriter, and producer MC Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger) returns to the sonic surface with his latest effort, "I'm People", which he says is "An intensely human record." Written and recorded throughout Bolinas, the North Carolina Piedmont, and a Santa Fe motel room, with the harmonious help from some of his longtime friends and creative collaborators, Sam Beam, Bruce Hornsby, Marcus King, Sara Watkins, Eric D. Johnson, Amy Helm, and members of Dawes, Taylor effortlessly exposes a liberating light to help guid listeners to a much safer soundscape where endless wars, polluted politics, and chaos cease to exist if only for a moment. For this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we had the wonderful oppurtunity to sit down the veteran songwriter and producer to talk about the album, the Grateful Dead (of course), skateboarding, Jack Johnson, and the intimate influence of music and its harmonious healing properties. "I'm People" is a brilliant collection of songs that push against the body like a whispering wind in an open field during a spirtual storm somewhere near the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough. This will be an album people call on during the inevitable hardships of life to recieve peace and ultimate understanding.
Maybe you've seen his vidoes while doom scrolling on your phone at two a.m. in search of elementary enlightenment or a break from the gravitational gloom of the world and its lunatic leaders. The universal use of his entire body through the meditational medium of the acoustic guitar, jaw harp, harmonica, nose flute, and vocals radically radiates the revolutionary reaction of the avant-garde in all its esoteric essence. Darcy Spidle, commonly known as Chik White, is a melodic moniker adopted by the Nova Scotia-based musician and performer for his work in films such as, (Lowlife, Tin Can, The Sinner) and music over the last twenty years. He is a force of great poetic power, improvisational intimacy, and elemental energy. Having first come onto the punk scene in Halifax, White toured and performed with several bands and projects, which critically connected him with his love for improve and the sometimes romantic reality of not only challenging his audience and listeners but himself within the experimental ecosystem he's created around his art. With the release of his latest effort, "Face Across the Door" on the Italian-based label Music a la Coque, as well as a spring tour to follow, White brings his melodic messages to the mortal masses in hopes of connecting, inspiring, entertaining, and distracting various audiences, even if just for a moment, from the chaos of the world, with lyrical laughter and humble harmonies.
Frank Hurricane is much more that just a songwriter or spiritual soothsayer; he's a psychedelic pirate manning the ancient waters under the splintered sun's biblical breast. Like some cosmic character from J.M. Barrier's 1904 masterpiece "Peter Pan", Hurricane's artistic approach to life and his work are rare these days, as everything has been melted down into this galactic goop for social media, and the poisonous pull that is has on our senses and judgement of people, places, and things. While we're making sure our posts are boosted and targeting our direct audience, you can find Hurricane riding shotgun on some of the most epic roller coasters across America as we take a much-needed spiritual journey with the musician and the colorfully capticating universe of atmospheric adrenaline he has created for an audience that he calls "Shrymps". His latest effort, "Southern Shrymp (In the Big City), which is set for release later this month on the Half Moon Bay, CA-based label Nudie Records, tells a tale of a young man on a quest in search of holy harmonies, exquisite experiences, and the songbook for spiritual survival in a world filled with chaos, and endless existentialism.
Both prolific, and poetic, Seattle, Washington-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and all-around spiritual splendor Chris Ballew has been writing and rapidly recording music for over thirty years like no one's business. As the frontman and bassist for the alternative rock band The Presidents Of The United States Of America, Ballew started his career busking in the busy streets of Boston in the late 1980s alongside Phil Franklin as the duo Egg, before relocating to LA, where he met and befriended a young Beck. Eventually moving back to the Emerald City, Ballew quickly formed the Presidents with Dave Dederer and Jason Finn, and by the time their iconic-self titled album was released in 1995, the group had become multi-platinum artists, and the rest is history! His disography is impeccable, intimate, full of laughter, and just what we need during these radically dark times. These days, you can find Ballew writing and recording music nonstop under his own name and the children's music project, Caspar Babypants, which has brought a great deal of peace and comfort into homes around the world for young parents and their bubbly babies. We need people like Ballew, and so do you!
Rutili's Califone has been around for nearly 30 years, if you can believe that. Rutili can't, and we talk about that for a mortal moment. Still, there were bigger topics on our minds, like ICE, the Trump administration, the pulverizing politics running rampant in our country, the confusing violence that seems to continue painting the numbing narrative of the "American Dream", and of course, the Grateful Dead. Rutili's music is both magical and intimately intense, as we find several concepts for coping, expressing, and exploring how music truly heals all wounds. As 2026 continues to roll out, Rutili prepares with Califone and Ugly Casanova for the Ice Cream Floats boat tour from Miami to Puerto Plata and the Dominican Republic this weekend, a short spring tour in April, and much more!
After relocating to the Bay Area in the late 1990s to pursue a vibrant vision of becoming a professional skateboarder, life had other plans for future artist, illustrator, and psychedelic painter Joe Robert (LSD Worldpeace). To properly pivot in the throes of reality, one has to put one foot in front of the other, and Roberts did just that. Later, studying at SFAI, he eventually began releasing books and zines such as accalimed titles "LSD Worldpeace", We Ate The Acid (61)A3HT3TA3," and 2021's "Clowns of Hyperspace", and has had several works featured in galleries like Slow Culture in LA and Marlborough Gallery in New York.  After a long break since the holidays, we sat down with Robert for an epic conversation about life's mysteries, creative chaos, youth, skateboarding, conspiracy theories, aliens, goverment mind control, world peace and his children, who have become his greatest inspiration. Roberts' work is influential, iconic and a radical reaction to the world and its cryptically comical side, while simultaneously allowing viewers to experience the spiritual secrets of the universe up close.
For the final episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast of 2025, we had the great pleasure of sitting down with multi-instrumentalist, activist, composer, and multimedia artist Micah Nelson (Particle Kid) to discuss the future of music streaming services like Spotify and the revolutionary reclaiming of musicians'/artists' intellectual property through a newly developed, creator-owned music and social media ecosystem powered by human intelligence called The Flow, which was developed, and founded by Mike Hanuschik. Join us for a mind-blowing conversation that takes several unexpected turns into the depths of creative culture, industry, and the fight for sonic survival. This multi-part episode will continue to explore the controversy and complexity of how these elements have destroyed the essence of not only a musician's living through their craft, but also a war that is sweeping the plaet as we speak.
There are some folks you feel like you've known forever, and perhaps you have in some other life than the one you're currently occupying. Westerlund is one of those people. A sonic soul that shifts in and out of an atmospheric array of outfits and poetic projects, his presence is equal to his artistic output. Positive, curious, and above all, genuine. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with the Research Triangle-based producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and percussionist to talk about his unique connection to sound, working with several artists like Califone, Nathaniel Russel, Jake Xerxes Fusell, Bon Iver, and Sylvan Esso, writting, and recording his most recent effort "Curiosities from the Shift", and much more.
While conjouring those familiar relams of romanticism found within the captivating caves of Leonard Cohen, Eduardo Bort, and Donovan, Sao Paulo, Braizil-bases multi-instrumentalist Sergio Victor Sayeg, known professionally as Sessa, has sincerely brought to the sonic surface a mesmerizing meditation on life, lover, fatherhood, and cultural connection with his latest effort, "Pequena Vertigem de Amor (Lil' Love Vertigo)." A brilliant body of work that effortlessly flows from one end of the galaxy to the echoing canals of the listeners' eager ears who patiently wait for its humbling vibrations, Sessa takes us on a journey that is one for the books.
It's been almost a year since we last spoke to Nastanovich, and what a year it's been, to say the least. From touring to moving to Maco, GA, to an official docufiction about the band called "Pavements", and everything else in between, the group's lyrical legacy and existential existence have only grown over the decades, and we're here for every second of it. Nastanovich is one of those critical characters in the sonic story who takes you out on the harmonious horizon for the views, while simultaneously educating you on the elements along the way. Having been a member of Pavement for over three decades, Nastanovich has navigated all the visceral valleys and mountains of madness that bands experience, and lives to tell the tale. Now one of the most celebrated and influential acts of their generation, Pavement is an iconic institution for indie artists everywhere. Join us on this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast as we traverse through the shadows of the past, present, and future to carefully collect the melodic memories and spellbinding efforts of one of the best to do it. Oh yeah, we also talk about plastic surgery, corporate corruption, building appliances, Chris Rock, and much more.
Since 2016, the LA-based supergroup, cover band, and iconic institution for all things Dead-related, Grateful Shred, has been a presence on the sonic scene for the last decade, emerging as one of the most well-respected and highly regarded acts of thier generation. Blending the essential efforts found within the Dead's early energy from the 1960s psychedelic era with the cosmic countryside of the early 1970s, the Shred, and its creative core have captured with incredible accuracy, the electrifying essence of the band with poetic precision. After a lightning-in-the-bottle moment on Shakedown Street in 2017 during a Dead and Co. show at the Hollywood Bowl, the group's luck changed overnight when a viral video, "Busted at the Bowl," was uploaded to their YouTube channel, and the rest became harmonic history. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with Horne and McCutchen to chat about the group's origins, favorite eras/albums of the Dead, the Shred's debut album "Might As Well", Dan's Dubs, Blade's Boards, and much more.
On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with the wizard behind the flowing crimson curtains of all things Uknown Mortal Orchestra, Ruban Nielson, to talk about his favorite cult classic horror films and how the unique process and trailblazing approach to some of those classics from the 1980s have inspired him on his melodic journey from the group's monumental 2011 self titled debut to their most recent EP "CURSE." Over the years, Nielson has kept a humbling philosophy on how he deals with the sonic success, and overall reality of being in a band that has not only transcended the cultural confines of "indie rock," but continues to create, and establish, exciting new melodic methods to bring out the best within. Having recently stepped into the wide and winding world of jam band culture and the tonal tenacity of the tape trading subculture that iconically came about during the Grateful Dead's radical reign on society, Nielson eagerly encourages fans to document UMO shows by using analog equipment such as film cameras, reel-to-reel machines, and other various tape recording instruments to not only capture the essence of the band live, but to be a part of something much bigger than the band istself.
On this terrifyingly spooky and melodically macabre episode-well, not actually that terrifying at all-of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we had the wonderful privilege to sit with the great Cass McCombs to discuss his brilliant new effort, "Interior Live Oak," and other atmospheric anecdotes such as how West Coast skateboard culture adopted him, made him one of the thier own, his late friend and musician Travis Graves (Mt. Egypt), recording the labum on both the West and East Coast, his cosmic connection with songstress Chris Cohen, life on the road, the importance of music overall, and much more.
Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Zachary Cale first came onto the scene with his 2005 debut "Outlander Sessions" some 20 years ago, if you can believe that. Having navigated an eclectic era that's far beyond different from the one we currently occupy, Cale has kept a steady pulse on the melodic machine, while simultaneously sharing the stage with the likes of the great James Toth (Wooden Wand), Deer Tick, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance), Kurt Vile, and several others over the course of his multi-layered career. Following up on the brilliant release of last year's "Next Year's Ghost" with the veteran musician's instrumental debut "Love's Work," we sit down with Cale to speak about his poetic perspective on this day, and age's so-called industry, while carefully balancing the hardships of life's complicated curveballs.
Embedded in the collected consciousness of popular culture, cinema, and creative charisma for the last four decades, legendary actor, filmmaker, and author Crispin Hellion Glover has danced on the elusive edge of artistic freedom, while simultaneously inhabiting an abstract atmosphere  like no one else of his generation. His almost alchemical approach to his craft is unparalleled and unpredictable, as he carefully uncovers the macabre mysteries of the human experience through characters you know and love. Having starred in such cineamtic classics as Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Back to the Future, River's Edge, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Doors, Hot Tub Time Machine, among several others, Glover's complex career on the big screen has truly cemeneted him as one of the greats of our time. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with Glover to chat about his most recent film, "No! YOU'RE WRONG. or Spooky Action at a Distance," which was shot entirely on 35mm film negative over the course of several years, and what seems like a lifetime since its critical conception. Followed by a short tour in select theaters to showcase the industrious intensity and intimate imagery of this spellbinding effort, Glover pulls us into his incredible imagination by swiftly displaying the timeless tones and electrifying elements of the Dada/Surrealist movement, which has undeniably influenced the actor throughout his compelling career. Set to premiere at MoMA in New York City this Thursday, October 2nd, the film will continue to run through the spooky month with more available dates on his site below. https://www.crispinglover.com
Now based in East Nashville, not too far from our little operation here in Tennessee, the subliminal songstress and mistress of melodic mastery, Marissa Nadler, has been gracing the alchemical airwaves for nearly two decades with her majestic meditations on life, death, love, memory, and several other elements of the human experience. Having signed with the Brooklyn-based label Sacred Bones Records in 2013 for the release of her monumental classic "July." She has since carved a captivating path of poetic perfection and otherwordly observations into the heart and soul of some of the most trepidatious topics that her peers Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan articulated so well throughout their careers.  We sit down to speak with Nadler about her new album "New Radiations" and just how private and personal this material is compared to her previous releases throughout her incredibly disciplined discography over the years, while simultaneously balancing being your own boss in the radically opinionated world that is the internet. "New Radiations" is a brilliant collection of songs that uplift the soul from the overwhelming depths of darkness by shining a lavish into the cryptic corners of the room, only to reveal the spiritual significance of beauty in its simplest form.
We're back for another exciting episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast with our friend, the talented multi-instrumentalist, artist, and fellow Nicolas Cage enthusiast, IIyas Ahmed. Pulling up a digital chair to chat with us about his visceral vision of the world and the people in it, the never-ending landscape of jazz, and its related juxtaposition, Ahmed tells the tonal tale joining the melodic machine that is Grails, his favorite films, a solo career that spans over two decades, and the intimate instincts it takes to be an artist in this day and age. Having come from a Greek/Pakistani background, Ahmed, like most of his generation, connected with the critical climate of the punk and hardcore bands of the 1980s before establishing a more spiritual setting on the melodic meter of self-discovery and existential expression. While exploring the atmospheric alchemy of instrumental music and its cinematic nature, Ahmed's overall style and approach are undeniably universal, as he confidently communicates a language that is both lyrical and legitimate.
From the shapeshifting subleties of his spiritual practices in sound, tonal texture, and electrifying emotion, to the carefully cinematic essence of his eager expressions behind the scenes, there isn't much the West Coast-based, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Blake Mills can't do. He's come a long ways since his classic 2010 debut "Broken Mirrors," while simultaneously capturing the critical chemistry of some of your favorite artists in between his sonic shifts and radical responsibilities in the studio.  On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with Mills for a long-awaited chat to discuss his most recent effort with legendary bassist and all-around master of melody, Pino Palladino, "That Wasn't A Dream." A breathtaking entry into the fundamentals of fusion, ritualistic rhthms, and lucid language between two incredible artists, Mills take us on a journey through his unique process, atmospheric approach, and tonal theories, while we kick back and marvel at the totality of his techniques, amighty attention to detail, and much more.
Chicago-based drummer, producer, and multi-displinary artist Spencer Tweedy has played music as long as he can remember. Growing up in a musical household, to say the least, Spencer gravitated towards his father Jeff Tweedy, founding member of such notable acts as Unlce Tupelo and Wilco, and his profession by quickly navigating his very own unique path in music. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we speak to Spencer about the critical connection he has with music, participating in bands like Case Oats, Tweedy/Jeff Tweedy, who is set to release their brand-new triple LP "Twilight Override" later this year, touring with Waxahatchee, the balance of life, and work, the climate of the music industry, and much more.
Hailing from a period in time that, to this day, continues to birth bands and artists all around the world, New York-based multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and one-half of perhaps one of the most influential bands of its time, The Holy Modal Rounders, Peter Stampfel has been creating music, and art for well over half a century. From the Rounders to the death-defying dynamics of The Fugs, and a million other lives inbetween, Stampfel's poetically prolific body of work is compelling to say the least, as the veteran musician takes us on a journey from one end of the galaxy to other end of the table in a cosmic conversation that ignites the spirit of creative change. His most recent effort, "Song Shards," carefully captures the essence of youth, eager advertisments of the past, and a friendly reminder to stop and appreciate the small things as the 46-track collection unfolds into a beautiful flower of friendliness.
Sharing the same timeline as ATL-based singer-songwriter, poet activist, and lyrical legend Speech, born Todd Thomas, of the acclaimed American hip hop group Arrested Development, is something that should bring us all a little comfort and peace in these crazy times. Having first established the groundbreaking group nearly four decades ago, Arrested Development pried open our culture's sore soul with perhaps one of the most influential albums, not just in hip hop and conscious rap, but in American music, 1992's "3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days In The Life Of...." Over the next three decades, the artist would go on to record several albums with the group, as well as eagerly establishing a solo career that covers just as much groovy ground as time continues moving forward, and history horrifically repeats itself. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gosple Podcast, we speak to Speech about his more formative years growing up in Tennessee before planting poetic roots Georgia in the mid to late 1980s, the influence of Southern hip hop on the world at large, the polarizing politics of the Trump administration, music's melodic meditation on the mind, the group's new album "Adult Contemporary Hip Hop," which was intentionally released on the Fourth of July, and much more.
Jack Cooper is one of those musicians you follow no matter the artistic anatomy of the individual's journey into the universally unknown. His atmospheric approach is organic and built on the brilliance of his peers, while bravely bridging the gap between the contagious contents of the 1980s and 1990s soundscapes. From his time in Mazes, The Beep Seals, and everything he eagerly evaulated, and put all his poetic power into his latest outfit, Modern Nature.  On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we speak to Cooper about his rural upbringing in the UK, the influences of bands such as Oasis, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, to name a few, the critical conditions of the world, and our place in it, and eventually forming Modern Nature. Releasing a series of titles on Bella Union, Cooper has returned to the sonic stratosphere with perhaps the band's most epic effort yet, "The Heat Warps."
From his homeland in New Zealand to the Big Apple, to Boston, where he formed one of the most influential bands, Galaxie 500, to the sophisticated sounds of Luna with his now wife Britta Phillips, Dean Wareham has accomplished so much in his forty-plus-year career. Settling in New York in the mid to late 1970s, the veteran musician caught some of the most anarchic acts of the decade, such as The Ramones, and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, before relocating to the city's sister scene in Boston to attend HU, where he met his future friends, and bandmates Naomi Yang, and Damon Krukowski, and the rest is, well you get the idea.  With one foot forward, a swift wind of whispering words left in his wake, Wareham doesn't look back. His poetic prolificacy is pure, passionate, and personal, and nothing is more liberating than keeping the tonal truck running. For this season premiere of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we're honored to have Wareham on to tell his sonic story, while simultaneously exploring the past, present, and future of music and melodic memory. We touch on our shared obsession with Dylan, his new album "That's The Price Of Loving Me," returning to his home in LA, and certain events that have taken place, the legacy of Galaxie 500/Luna, and much more.
In this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we wrap up the 7th season of the show with the wonderful oppurtunity to finally sit down with one of our harmonic heroes, the great Will Oldham of Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Someone who needs no introduction, Oldham has been on our hearts, and minds for many years as we spin a youthful yarn of memories and reflection on some of the world's greatest artists who are no longer with us, such as David Berman and Michael Hurley. Oldham breaks down his latest masterpiece "The Purple Bird," which was released earlier this year on No Quarter, as well as the back-to-back "High and High and Mighty," and the brilliant "Hear The Children Sing The Evidence" with fellow friends and musicians Nathan Salsburg and Tyler Trotter. We prasie our mutual friend, and incredible inspiration Ryan Davis, Bill Callahan, and cover Willie Nelson's abstract approach to guitar playing at this stage in his career. Oldham remains one of the most intense and softly sophisticated songwriters of his generation, with a career that has challenged the mind, body, and soul in ways that still stir the evidence of something extraterrestrial. We couldn't be more honored to occupy the same frame in history as him, and so many others out there doing brilliant work.
In this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we speak with British-born, Chicago-based musician, producer, and all-around man of the times, James Elkington, a household name in Chicago's rich and complex music history. From his early days with the math rock outfit Elevate back in the UK to joining Thrill Jockey's long-running supergroup Brokeback, led by the legendary Douglas McCombs of Tortoise, Elkington has navigated a challenging landscape of hard work, unwavering dedication, and a keen eagerness to learn and explore the endless possibilities found in music's melodic memory bank. With a solo career steeped in radical descents into the poetic psyche, Elkington's atmospheric ability to evoke both the past and present is showcased in release such as "Ever-Roving Eye," "Me Either," and 2025's "Pastel De Nada." Reflecting critical changes in today's music, art, and culture, Elkington discusses the contrast between writing and recording his music versus producing others, generational gestures from one person to another, the Golden Era of 1980s culture, future works, and much more..
"GWW, "A Life Of Scare," The New Man, and much more" Just like our little operation, Evan Laffer and Ian Grant first launched their podcast, Jokermen, during the paralyzing pandemic to not only shed lyrical light and spin an endless yarn on the liberating legends that stand as their subjects but to find perfect peace and creature comfort in their harmonious heroes during one of the most horrendous times in contemporary history. Revealing the melodic meditation and stunning zeitgeist of some of the greatest minds in music, art, and cosmic culture, from The Beach Boys to Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Randy Newman and, or course, our subliminal soothsayet and sonic savior, Bob Dylan, Laffer, and Grant have provoked the ultimate unity by focusing on these legends in a way that is both tasteful and wildly addicting.  Laffer, who is also a poet, first found soalce in Dylan's work some years back and has since dedicated a great deal of his life, time, and radical research to the complex chameleon and his ever-changing landscape of lyrical liberation and esoteric energy. While this episode acts as a meeting of the minds of two people who are indefinitely obsessed with the "Great White Wonder," it will also mostly likely provoke a series of creative conversations and "Dylanistic" digestion into the daring depths of society's subconscious without a lifeguard in sight. Join us as we begin to peel back these lysergic layers of history by introducing a more abstract approach to a world that hass been scoured by scholars, where a "Simple Twist Of A Fate" will take you much further in this life of tremendous twilight that you ever could have imagined.
From the intimacy of Iranian culture and its historical heritage, New York-based musician and artist Rahill Jamalifard grew up in Michigan in a family who vauled music with great admiration. Having placed herself in the creative core of her community's music scene, Rahill fell in love with the land of Lou Reed on a simple trip to "The City Of Dreams" before deciding to move there indefinitely over a decade ago. Influenced by her surroundings and their anciet teachings, Rahill pulled from the great Brion Gysin and his Dream Machine while effortlessly embodying the city's atmosphere and befriending its poetic population. While occupying a gig in the fashion industry, she began fronting bands such as Habibi and Roya before embarking on a wonderful solo career that has shapped her into a fierce force of soulful sound and a destination for melodic meditation. While a huge Spring tour supporting La Luz is on the horizon, Rahill has established an electrifying entry in music that will age gracefully as time progresses.
We're back after having lain dormant since our last episode back in December, and we're thrilled to announce our return to the streaming stratosphere with Susan Dietrich, known to many within the Outer Rim as The Space Lady. A colleague among the brave cosmos, Dietrich has lived many lives since first immersing herself in the disillusioned depths of creative culture in the 1960s. While busking under the sun and moon with poetic perserverance to evade the cruel draft of the Vietnam War alongside her partner, Dietrich's story is uniquely universal, filled with a wealth of inspiration, hardships, and melodic reflections that have carried her singing spirit to hell and back. Now in her early 70s, The Space Lady's legend has come full circle as she performs worldwide, driven by planetary performance and sonic storytelling.
Mays says, "The craft of songwriting is 100% what I'm about. That's what keeps me going. My goal is to just live a long life and write a ton of good songs." And while the essence of his outstanding career, which dates back to this 2009 debut "The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele" on Paw Tracks, is something built entirely on melodic magic and sonic sweat, the multi-faceted musician has only expanded his harmonious horizons over the years into a brilliant catalog of pure odyssey and imagination.  On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we explore May's youth growing up Mississippi, writing songs as young as seven years old, our mutual fascination and connection to the nostalgic narrative of the past, present, and future, the influential zeitgeist of Creed, May's most recent album entitled "What's For Breakfast," and much much more. Enjoy!

For me there is Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and James Jackson Toth, aka, Wooden Wand. A singular voice of his generation, Toth has single handedly expressed the poetic and abstract reality of not only being a songwriter, but a person during the many countless and hectic times we've all survived in the last 20 to 25 years. His flawless breath embodies what it truly means to be an artist and his mastery of words and cosmic phrases only put him up there with the greats. It was a sublime moment in my life to speak with James about growing up in New York before his poetic departure to the many locations he has dwelled over the years including the south, West Virginia and his current location with his wife and dog, Wisconsin. We speak about the Dead, of course, his approach to song-writting, heavy metal, life on the road, making records and so much more. Toth is my favorite song writer for a reason and I hope that after this episode you'll understand for yourself if you don't already. Enjoy!

"Jagari" returns to the podcast this week to talk about his childhood growing up in Africa, copper mining and the influence of labor. W.I.T.C.H and its incredible origin story and what he and the band are currently working on this summer! It's always a pleasure speaking to him and we couldn't be more happy to share space with the legend for a second time. Enjoy!
Nova Scotia based group Nap Eyes are a truly unique band in many ways. From the emotional elements of Chapman's poetry, the overall sonic tones unforcingly expressed from the band and most importantly the delivery of their boundless energy. I first heard and saw Nap Eyes during a very formative summer in 2018 and it was totally magical! The guys talked to us and made us feel like we were friends right off the bat that night. It doesn't always work that way, but these guys are the real deal! On this episode of the Primitive Man Soundz Podcast we explore Chapman's youth growing up listeing to Green Day's "Dookie", picking up the guitar for the first time, meeting his future bandmates, forming Nap Eyes, science and chemistry, signing to Paradise Of Bachelors/Jagjaguwar, the pandemic, the emotional states of being a person and artist during these times, their most recent record "Snapshot Of A Beginner" and much more!
German based "Free Rock"group Missus Beastly are a mysterious one indeed. Having had an alter-ego callled Dr. Aftershave and The Mixed Pickles, the band released three LPs throughout the 70's and then like most groups of their time faded into the spacetime continuum. I had the oppurtunity to speak with the legendary musician Michael Scholz about his formative years, joining the bnad after they had already started and other details of just exactly what this band was in their epic peak in the 1970's.

Born and raised in Franklin, TN, the Orrall brothers grew up in the south just like any other kid in the 90's. The family would eventually relocate to Nashville for their father's work in the music industry and it would be a matter of time time that Jake and his brother Jamin started their own scene. Jeff The Brotherhood formed in 2001 as a powerhouse duo of psychedelia and punk. Launching their own label, Infinity Cat Recordings to house their prolific output of muisc, the band quickly became one of the most important groups in the last 20 years in the DYI scene. Born and raised in TX, Ivey grew up in a very religious household that limitied his relationship and reach with music and art. But with a certain family member showing him Hank Williams for the first time, Ivey's world sincerely changed forever. He made sure thats what he wanted to do and began playing guitar shortly after. As time went on he met the love of his life, Margo Price, and together they took on the world through their music and passion to create together. Relocating to Nashville, TN, contemporay countries magnificent duo have made a name for themselves both together and seperatley as Ivey has his own body of music he has created. It was a blast to finally have the oppurtuinty to speak to Ivey about life, love, passion, never giving up on your dreams, the church of Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, his lovely wife and family and much more. Happy 420!
Long running pal and musical partner of the great Jack Johnson, Gill has been on the scene with his group ALO and the Jack Johnson band for over two decades now! Born and rasied in Huntington Beach, CA, Costa quickly became influenced and inspired by the rising scene of street skating that took the world by storm in the 1990's. With pioneers such as Jamie Thomas, The Gonz, Ed Templeton, Andrew Reynolds and so many others, Costa knew he wanted to be among his pioneers by becomig a pro rider. But with a severe leg injury, it quickly became apparant that this might not be in the cards for him. Costa began playing music during this time and with the love and support of his friends, he gave it a shot by sharing his other gift, songwriting. I've been a fan of Costa's music for quite some time and had no idea this episode of the podcast would be so genuine and fun! Costa's a special guy and one of the greats of our time. In this episode we explore his early years growing up in California, moving to Florida for a brief time, skatebaording, getting into music, his friendship with Jack Johnson and the Brushfire label, film making and so much more!
Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Gage has occupied a few different southern spaces before setting roots in California where he launched, back in '05, one of the most unique and voice driven music publications of all time, Aquarium Drunkard. Nearing its 20th anniversary, AD hosts a trully consistent forecast for the divine, the original and above all, the creative talents of artists, musicians, film makers, authors, etc. all under one cosmic roof. Its a matrix community of folks that appreciate rich culture, incredible human talent and above all, sharing these elements with their dedicated readers. It was a real pleasure speaking to the man behind it all about his humble beginings, how he's sharpened his wonderful taste in the arts over time and what keeps Aquarium Drunkard going strong after all the years!
Formed from the genius of Henry Barnes in the mid to late 90s, AFC has been the ultimate spitritual vessel for Barnes self made, self revolutionized music for over 20 years. As diverse as the universe, as organic as nature, AFC is part of a chemical reaction in the brain and in the land, mixed with stellar stringed instruments (all hand made by Barnes) and vibrating electronic chaos. It was a total honor speaking with Barnes as I've been a huge fan of his work for ten years now! In this podcast we speak about life, death, music, politics, nature, beauty and of course what happens after our bones are too tired to carry on!
I don't think STRAY needs much of an introduction. You either know, or you don't! Axe man Del Bromham is our next guest on the podcast this week! Bromham is a legend and has contributed extraordinary guitar work and originality in the world of rock n' roll and we couldn't be more excited to have him on the show. Enjoy!
On this episode of the Primitive Man Soundz podcast we take a further dive into the very mysterious, very spirtual D.R. Hooker record, "The Truth", with percussionist and drummer Ken Lovelett. In September of 2022 I conducted an interview for our online publication with bassist George Sheck, but I always knew this story would re-surface again for further exploration, so here we are! Lovelett sheds light on so many unknowns about the creation of this group's lone record, its rare prcoess as well as other cosmic details during that time in 1972. Enjoy! Support the show!
We're back after a much needed break and what better way to kick off the rest of the second half of season 4 than to have the legend himself, John Dwyer of the OSEES on the show! Dwyer is an underground powerhouse of innovation, creativity and outrageous discipline! The band has seen many evolutions as well as revolutions in it's 20 plus year life span and Dwyer has no intention of lefting off the gas any time soon! It was a blast talking to him about the struggles and impact the pandemic has had on the music culture/industry this past couple of years, modern day psychedelia, a new OSEES album in the works and much more. Enjoy!
A legend and all around wonderful person, Larry Schemel has been on the scene for over 30 years and has no intention of ever stopping. Brother of Patty Schemel, drummer of Hole, the Schemel's became of age during the mid to late 70s and saw the crucial punk/hardcore scene come out of the intensity of the Reagan era chaos of the early/mid 80s. It was completely mind boggling to travel through Schemel's outstanding memory of the late 70s rock god phenomenon, the 1980s righteousness and hardcore energy and into the 90s where he saw bands like Nirvana, Bratmobile and Earth come out from under the mist and into the stratosphere of finance and fantasy. History and cosmic hemisphere. Schemel has survived and thrived and his insight into music, culture, film (specifally horror) are nothing but inspiring and modivating. It was a pure joy speaking to the legend and really getting to know him through this in-depth interview and conversation between two people. Enjoy!
A true pioneer of sound and a sonic wizard of tone, Dylan Carlson has had his thumb on the pulse of all things heavy and mediative for over three decades now. First forming Earth in 1989, the name inspired by the humble beginings of Sabbath, Carlson was already ahead of the curve with what he envisioned for his band. Long song structures, isolated riffs and the attention span of a sherpa upon a Nepalese mountain top, but maybe he was a little too ahead of curve back in those days... With the ressurection of not only the music and the band, but of Carlson himself, Earth has been one of the most consistent forces of nature and ancient practises for the last 15 years. With 2008's release of "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull" really changing the status and trajectory of the band, Earth has stood the test of time and have solidified their place among the stars. It was a true honor speaking with the legend and getting to know him on many different levels. Carlson has been through alot, to say the least, but one things for certain, he's not going anywhere no matter how bad the world may seem at times! That's when great art is made and this guys are a great example of people rising to the occasion and truly reflecting that. Enjoy!
Field is one of the most unique and spiritual artists, in my opinion, to the day. His guitar and voice a sonic vibration through the natural world, his work organic and plenty, his style  abstract and philosophical. Little Wings is a special spirit in this world of sound and color and I'm stoked to finally have him on the podcast! Make sure to check out Uncle Kyle's new works on labels such as Sun Cru and Astral Spirits!
Jason Woodbury is a writer, deejay and record man based in the Sonoran Desert. He's the creative director at Hello Merch, editor of Justin Gage's "Aquarium Drunkard", host of the Transmissions podcast as well as his monthly program "Range and Basin on Dublab". Woodbury has contributed to such platforms as Pitchfork, AD, Flood Magazine, CBR, Relix and many more. Theres not much Woodbury can't do and when he's not writing about music, you can find him playing with his group Kitomoto! It was a good time sitting down with this swiss army knife cat to talk about all things music, UFOs and of course the goat of all goats, Adam Sander. Enjoy!
Ending this two Part series with the legendary Randy Holden was something cosmic and spectacular. This is the most intimate betrayal of the guitar god's life as we explore beyond the music! Holden eventually stopped playing music all together, if you can imagine, and move to Hawaii where he fell in love with commercial fishing before buying his own boats and becoming his own captain! Holden really held on for dear life as things unfolded for him over the decades with loss, heart ache and existentialism all around him, but he never gave up! Relocating back to California he began to play again and with an old friend from Blue Cheer, the late Paul Whaley that recorded one last album together. Holden's brainchild "Population 2" got it's proper release on Riding Easy Records a few years back and has since then gained a whole new audience and generation for Holden's groundbreaking work! I'm beyond excited and honored to share this beautiful and intimate ending to the legendary guitarist story. Enjoy!
A legend among legends Glen E. Friedman single handedly documented the California Dogtown skate scene in the mid 70's when he was just a teenager and had already been published in Skateboarder magazine during this time! He shot the likes of the late Jay Adams, TA, Peralta, Red Dog and so many more. Soon after he would go on to do just the same for the emerging punk movement that sprawled the land and took over the consciousness of the youth in the the early 80s. Friedman took some of the earliest photos of bands such as Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat and many more. Friedman was also on the early horizon of Hip-Hop and was able to captures some of earliest pioneers of the game such as Run DMC, ICE-T, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, etc. A true renegade and master of his craft. Friedman has captured some of the most pinnacle moments in skatebaording and music culture in the last 40 plus years. It was incredibe speaking as well as meeting Friedman as I've been a fan of his for as long as I can remember. Enjoy!
One of the greatest guitarist of all time, Randy Holden is a house hold name not only in rock n' roll, but in HEAVY METAL! Prior to joining Blue Cheer, Holden was always and still is, on a mission, a cosmic mission to find the right tone and sustain to project his guitar sound to the cosmos.  In this two part series Holden and I talk about his early days with Fender IV, Sons of Adam, what was left of Blue Cheer towards the end of the 60s when he joined and recording the heaviest most explosive record of all time, "Population 2". Enjoy!
What a great episode to kick off Season 4! Mike Stax has been at it with Ugly Things Magazine for over thirty years! Covering bands and artists that didn't receive the attention, or acknowledgment that they deserved so long ago, as well as shedding light on legends such as the Craig Smith story here recently. Born and raised in England, Stax moved to So-Cal in the early 80s to pursue music and what he would come to find out a few years down the line was starting a rock and roll magazine was also in his future! It was great meeting and speaking to the legend behind UTM and getting to know him as he too feels he was born to late. Stax is wonderful at bridging the gap between past/present and bringing these stories to light. He's definitely inspired what I do here with the podcast and my online publication! Enjoy!
In this season finale I spoke to the legend Fred Pessaro about all things music and culture. Pessaro is one of those guys thats always keeping mutliple fires burning all at once. A lover of music and someone that is heavly influenced by culture, he is considered to be one of the most "influential people in NYC" and has editorial expience for prestigious outlets such as Vice, Brooklyn Vegan, New York Times, Revolver, just to name a few. It was great speaking as well as meeting Fred as we spoke about his youth growing up in DC's hardcore scene, going for it when it comes to shooting your shot, bringing rock n' roll's most legendary publication back to life, Creem Magazine and so much more. Enjoy!
The Jackalope Joe, arguably has one of the most extensive and intimate collections of the late - great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson in the world. Starting his collection in the early 2000's, Joe set out on a mission to build the life of someone that lived mad and wrote even madder. A person so special, so ludicrous that he simply could not be contained in just the pages he wrote, but in the objects and relics he collected and aquired throughout his life. it was a pleasure speaking to Joe about HST's legacy, the way he chose to live his singular life and so much more. Enjoy!
Rob (Eclectic Mud) is a homie from the So-Cal area that has a passion for all things rock and roll both from the underground as well the above ground sounds. Born and raised in Connecticut, Rob moved to NYC just after the 9/11 attacks and actually when this conversation took place a few weeks back After many years living in the East Coast and a few journies inbetween, Rob found himself in Southern California in recent years where he is now married and spends his days spinning records and enojoying his wife and child's company. It was a pleasure finally getting to meet the homie after follwing him on social media since the Pandemic. Enjoy!
Timothy Williams is a composer that moved to LA in the early 2000s to pursue his craft as well as his love for music. Having worked on projects for Disney, it wasn't until Williams got his big break, along with friend and colleague Tyler Bates, on the film 300. Since then Williams has worked on projects such as "Get Out", Jordan Peele's debut masterpiece, "Deadpool 2", "The Swear Jar" and here mostly recently, the Ti West film "Pearl". It was great speaking with Williams about his love and passion for music, sailing, his family and what it takes to be an artist in this decade. Enjoy!
Some Folks you feel you've always known. I've experienced this dozens of times, especially on the podcast with various guests and Riley is just one of those people. Super down to Earth, a great talent at everything he stes hismind too, buut above all, his own person. I've wanted to do an episode with him on the podcast since I first started as we both share similar interests and passions and figured it would be like meeting an old friend! If you know Riley, you know he's a killer both on the board as well as off the board. This episode focuses on those many talents and passions, but more so we found ourselves explore the age of youth, shedding light on mental health consciousness, the small things and being intentional with your time. It was a pleasure speaking to our new homie. Hope you enjoy the show!
Born and raised in Buffalo, NY Gurl Morlix moved to TX in his mid 20s to pursue his love and passion for music. Playing locally, it was a matter of time till the cosmic entity know as Blaze Foley was bound to end up in Morlix's life. The dou would go on to become great friends, play countless shows together as well as record music together until Foley's untimely death in the 80s.   Spending time between his family's cabin in Canada and Austin, TX, Gurf still writes and records music constantly and is currenytly working on a release this Fall! it was an honor speaking to this legend and hearing his stories as well as his journey through music and so much more. Enjoy

Born and raised in Florida, Richard Maddox began playing music just like any other kid. Influenced by The Beatles, amongst others, until it was his turn to create music! He eventually met his bandmates and formed a unique band, like many, that would come and go... Masalla are a Daytona, FL based heavy rock/psych group that released one single in 1970 on the Climax label that is pure earthquake bliss in the ear! It was pleasure speaking with Maddox about growing up, his love and passion for music, Masalla and yes... The reissue of this record from Ancient Grease that is coming for very soon, so stay tuned! New York based group Unsettled Society released a few singles on the Pete Huntley label called Charm in the mid/late 60s before the group transitioned to Thunderhead. Cappelletti played rhythm guitar and sang lead vox in the band(s) and after suffering a near fatal car crash, that left Mike permanently injured, it's safe to say he was supposed to continue on as a ROCKER! I've been working on nailing this interview down through Mike's oldest son for quite sometime and I'm glad to finally release this episode of the podcast today. I wanted to track down an interesting subject from the legendary Woodstock festival. I've had the pleasure fo speaking to a few artists that played, but no one that actually attended the festival. That was until I located Mike Greenblatt, a writer, freelance journalist and in 2019 he published his first novel "Woodstock 50th Anniversary: Back To Yasgur's Farm" which also included a foreword by the legendary Country Joe McDonald! Greenblatt is a purist  when it comes to music. His love for the arts is outstanding and inspiring and though he's older than me, I feel we're the same in many ways. We came from the same generation of thought, the same energy source, the same cosmic womb... WE ARE THE PEOPLE! It was wonderful speaking to Greenblatt and hearing his legendary tales of attending the greatest and most terrifying festival in rock history, Woodstock! You had to be there in many ways, but hopefully this a kaleidoscope into that prismatic void for anyone that missed it, which was most of us. D'Agostino was bitten by the "Sabbath" bug at the early age of seven and from them on, this has inspired and manifested the trajectory of, not only his music taste, but his life! In 2003 D'Agostino purchased one, if not the, most valuable and rarest piece in rock history. The unheard Black Sabbath Acetate! This is the kind of stuff that only legends are made of and that's exactly what our conversation entails! Joe's a nice guy and is very passionate about music and music history, so this conversation was fluid and natural. Now currently residing in Nevada, it was nice chatting with the man beholding the legendary record. Enjoy!Support the show Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. A folk legend from Maine, Bill Stone recorded his lone LP masterpiece in 1970 entitled "Stone" at just the age of 19/20 with his friends and local talent from the community. Having been done wrong buy the label head, nothing new there, he decided to pursue other ventures in his life and relocated here in TN for awhile while attending Vanderbilt for his doctorate in the 80s before moving back to Maine. Stone never stopped playing music throughout the years and still jams to this day! It was a real pleasure speaking to the man behind such an extraordinary record in this short, but revealing and calm interview.
