What does it take to transform an orchard from a high-input production system into a thriving, resilient ecosystem? In this presentation from the 2024 Acres U.S.A. Eco-Ag Conference, regenerative agriculture consultant and orchard specialist Chuck Schembre shares his practical approach to regenerative orcharding.Drawing from decades of experience in vineyards, orchards, and diversified farming systems, Chuck explores how soil biology, mycorrhizal fungi, plant diversity, livestock integration, and adaptive management can dramatically improve tree health, nutrient cycling, water infiltration, and profitability. Rather than focusing on inputs and prescriptions, he challenges growers to embrace observation, ecosystem function, and the power of photosynthesis to create healthier, more productive orchards.Whether you're managing commercial fruit production, planting a homestead orchard, or simply interested in regenerative agriculture, this episode offers actionable insights into building living soils, reducing dependency on external inputs, and working with nature to grow stronger crops.Thank you to our Sponsors of Today’s Episode:Azure Standard: https://www.azurestandard.com/American Farmland Trust: https://farmland.org/Important Links from Today’s Episode:Members site: https://members.acresusa.comAcres U.S.A. Hosted during the American Regeneration Summit with Acres U.S.A. at Sovereignty Ranch, this unforgettable discussion with Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. explores the future of agriculture, the collapse of the chemical food system, the rise of regenerative farming, breakthrough technologies replacing toxic inputs, and the growing national movement to restore soil, health, and freedom. From practical solutions that reduce chemical dependency to deeper reflections on stewardship, spirituality, and the role of the American farmer, this conversation highlights why regenerative agriculture has become one of the defining movements of our time.Featuring Rick Clark, Mollie Engelhart, Taylor Henry, Clint Brauer, Frank Glatz, Pete Oberle, and more, this powerful panel examines how regeneration can strengthen rural communities, empower farmers, improve public health, and help shape a more resilient future for the next generation.
In this episode of the podcast, Chris Jones—retired University of Iowa water quality researcher and author of The Swine Republic—dives into the environmental realities of modern agriculture in Iowa and across the Corn Belt. From nitrate-contaminated drinking water and stream erosion to ethanol policy, CAFOs, and the loss of diversified farming systems, Jones delivers a candid look at how industrial agriculture has reshaped rural landscapes, public health, and water quality. He also explores what regenerative, diversified agriculture could look like moving forward—and why meaningful change may require both policy reform and a complete rethinking of the current system. Bruce Tainio is famous for his imaginative, creative look at sustainable agriculture. In this talk from the 2005 Acres U.S.A. annual Eco-Ag Conference, Tainio leads the audience through the necessities needed in soil life to produce healthy, voluminous yields. The late Tainio is a great speaker and presenter, and Acres U.S.A. fans will surely love this presentation, which will never go out of date. Tainio received his formal education at Eastern Washington University, majoring in Biology. As a part of his curriculum, Bruce spent a year traveling the world, collecting and cataloging field data and food crops in various countries. In the early 1960s, Bruce began his career as a plant breeder and microbiologist. During that time, he developed many food crop and flower seed varieties for seed companies around the world. Early in his career, Bruce came to realize that conventional NPK growing practices and over-use of agricultural chemicals were destroying the earth's natural ecosystem, lowering crop productivity and the nutritional value of our food. In his continuous quest for excellence, he began studying the role of microbial activity in the soil and how it affected the health of plants. In 1985, Bruce started Tainio Technology & Technique, Inc. as a specialty seed company. During this early period, Bruce developed many crop and commercial seed varieties, all raised with special attention to balanced plant nutrition and good soil biology. By 1987, Bruce had developed a successful biological crop management program, making Tainio Biologicals, Inc. what it is today.Important Links from Today’s Episode:Members site: https://members.acresusa.comAcres U.S.A. Jeff Moyer's premise at the 2015 Acres U.S.A. annual conference follows: Soil health is dependent on several key concepts, all based on the idea that soil is a complex material made up of a physical component, a chemical component and a biological component. It is only when all three of these components are in balance that the soil can function in a dynamic state of health. Every farm can benefit from improved soil health and reduced costs. This experienced organic farmer will teach key concepts every farmer, organic or not, should be practicing.Important Links from Today’s Episode:Members site: https://members.acresusa.comAcres U.S.A.
