CrimsonCast is the longest-running podcast focused on IU Athletics. Founded in 2008, the podcast provides regular discussion about Indiana football, Indiana basketball, and interesting things related to being an IU fan. We regularly cover Indiana University culture, Bloomington / Indianapolis / state of Indiana culture, college sports business, and a ton of other things. CrimsonCast is a proud member of the Back Home Network, the place where Hoosiers across the country gather to talk about their favorite teams.

GC brings you the annual Holiday Mailbag episode. Audience questions vary widely (as they always do) but include topics such as: Whether basketball's success is impacted by football Early bracketology for men's hoops and what they need to do to get to the tournament Recent libations that Galen has enjoyed The ideal menu for a Christmas tailgate Updates on recent cooking escapades Advice to Indiana football fans on how to talk with fans of blue blood programs Injury updates prior to the Rose Bowland much more. Happy Holidays!
On CrimsonCast Ep. 1293, Galen Clavio and Scott Caulfield react to Indiana football’s national breakout moment on 60 Minutes and what it says about the program’s new place in the sport — including the small details that made the segment resonate with a broader audience. Then it’s full Rose Bowl / College Football Playoff quarterfinal mode as Indiana draws Alabama. The guys break down what the Crimson Tide look like right now, including QB Ty Simpson, Alabama’s passing game strengths, questions in the run game, and which personnel Indiana must account for. They also discuss the coaching chess match, including Kalen DeBoer and DC Kane Wommack, and why Indiana’s structure under OC Mike Shanahan and DC Bryant Haines translates well to a neutral-site playoff environment. Finally, Galen and Scott step back to evaluate the College Football Playoff after another round of lopsided results — debating access, perception, and why “who belongs” conversations often reveal more about bias than football.
It’s a CrimsonCast x The Big Red Carpet crossover as Galen Clavio and Rhett Lewis break down the first three College Football Playoff games—with the deepest focus on Alabama’s 34–24 comeback win at Oklahoma and what it tells us about the Tide heading into the Rose Bowl CFP quarterfinal vs Indiana. They discuss what worked (and what still looks vulnerable) for Alabama, how Indiana’s defense under Bryant Haines can create problems, and the biggest chess-match elements—especially with IU adjusting up front without Stephen Daley. The guys also hit the rest of the bracket: Miami’s 10–3 win over Texas A&M and Ole Miss’ 41–10 win over Tulane (and what those results suggest about the next round). Plus: live audience questions, injury updates, portal/roster-building discussion, and Pasadena meetup plans leading into Rose Bowl week.
Galen Clavio opens the show with a handful of Indiana football news items as the Hoosiers await their Rose Bowl / CFP quarterfinal opponent — including the wild scene at Memorial Stadium’s rally towel distribution, reflections on Fernando Mendoza’s Heisman win, and why keeping coordinator continuity (including Mike Shanahan’s extension and Bryant Haines on defense) matters for sustaining IU as a national power. Then Galen is joined by former On3 reporter Andy Wittry for a wide-ranging conversation about the college football landscape: Utah’s groundbreaking private-capital partnership and what it could mean for athletic departments nationally, the Big 12’s reported pursuit of private capital, the growing financial squeeze (including high-profile student-fee debates), and how the CFP is evolving amid ongoing political pressure from major brands like Notre Dame.
Indiana football just added another piece of history: Fernando Mendoza is the first Hoosier to win the Heisman Trophy, and Galen Clavio and Scott Caulfield unpack what the moment means for the program, the fan base, and Mendoza’s place in Indiana sports lore. They also dig into the voting results and why Mendoza’s biggest moments (and biggest stage) ultimately separated him from the other finalists. Then it’s a hard pivot to Indiana basketball: the Hoosiers lose 72–60 at Kentucky, and the conversation turns to the team’s offensive issues, foul trouble, thin margins, and what it means for the Big Ten grind ahead under Darian DeVries.
Indiana just won the Big Ten Championship and is gearing up for the College Football Playoff, but the work isn’t done. Galen Clavio goes solo to break down Indiana football’s week after the conference title, how the Hoosiers adjust defensively without Stephen Daley, and what potential CFP matchups vs Alabama or Oklahoma might look like schematically. Galen also dives into the national college football drama:The Notre Dame–ACC war of words after the Irish were left out of the CFP, including AD Pete Bevacqua’s public shots at the league and calls for format changes. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips pushing for immediate CFP expansion after the controversy. The Heisman race between Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza and Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, who has become the media’s SEC-fueled alternative.Michigan’s ugly situation around former coach Sherrone Moore, and what it says about culture, leadership, and how quickly an athletic department can lose controlPlus: bracket talk, how Bryant Haines’ defense solves problems like a Roman legion, why Indiana’s portal strategy is pure Moneyball, and what the sport’s power brokers are really doing with the playoff going forward.Subscribe for more Indiana football, CFP breakdowns, and Big Ten realignment drama all postseason.

Join Galen and Scott as they dive into the latest Indiana football rankings with the release of the Coaches Poll. After years of under-the-radar status, the Hoosiers are sitting pretty at 19th in the poll to start the season, and the guys have a lot to say about how Indiana stacks up. How will this ranking impact the team’s confidence, and what does it mean for their schedule against top-tier opponents like Oregon and Penn State? They also touch on preseason expectations, the wild fluctuations in rankings, and what this all means for Indiana's playoff chances.Plus, Scott shares some insider insights on the future of Memorial Stadium with possible upgrades to fan experience, including luxury boxes and event spaces.
Scott has returned from his vacation, so it's time to get cracking by answering more CrimsonCast listener questions about this year's Indiana football team. On this episode, we discuss our travel plans for IU football road games, how the running back room is shaping up and who will get the lion's share of the carries, who will start at slot receiver, and whether the shift in personnel attributes will lead to a different utilization of the tight end position.
Today’s episode focuses entirely on your questions related to IU Football. We had a bunch of questions in this batch about Indiana’s schedule this year, their place in college football and the overall discourse, and how Cignetti’s comments at Big Ten Media Days have resonated across the college football landscape. We also discuss what record Indiana needs to maintain recruiting momentum and whether IU’s schedule this year provides more opportunities to prove itself on the national stage.
As the pre-football summer starts to wind to a close, we wanted to take some time to tackle a few topics that might be of interest to you folks. Today's episode is the first of a multi-part podcast about the youth sports scene in the United States and elsewhere. We start off by discussing the backstory of why the United States has the (largely) education-based sports development model that it has, while Europe and elsewhere utilize different approaches. We discuss the early days of organized sports, the introduction of certain team-based sports into the educational environment, and how the methods and motivations for training and developing athletes have directly affected things over the years.
Happy Fourth of July! With not a lot going on in the sports world, we decided to tackle a lingering problem in sports media --- namely, why does ESPN seem like it's so out of touch these days? CrimsonCast contributor Greg Gottfried and the doctor sit down for an extended conversation about the recent criticisms of ESPN, the disconnect between the network and the fans, and the changing culture surrounding sports media. Yes, this is a long episode, and that's on purpose. Throw this one on while you're mowing the lawn or smoking a brisket.
Taylor Lehman of Bite Sized Bison joins the show once again, as we talk about the recruiting successes of the spring and summer for Indiana football, Curt Cignetti, and his staff. We discuss the large haul of recruits for the Hoosiers this spring and summer and how that compares to the program's recent history, the reasons for the changes, the strategy the staff may be taking with their recruiting, and how the unique aspects of the roster will impact what IU does moving forward. We also discuss a couple of the recent recruits and what their fit looks like in Bloomington.
IU men's basketball secured their first commitment of the 2026 class, pulling in 4-star guard Prince-Alexander Moody. GC is joined by Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth from X's and Joe's to scout the newest Hoosier, discuss his future fit within the program, and talk about Indiana's renewed recruiting efforts in the DMV.
Scott and GC talk through an absolute gut punch of a loss for the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. We discuss the impact of Haliburton's achilles tear, the difficulty in processing the injury in real-time, where this loss lands in the ranking of "worst losses ever" that the two of us have experienced as fans, and the implications of the injury on the Pacers franchise moving forward. We also discuss whether the Pacers may actually be the most cursed franchise in the NBA at this point.
Scott and Galen recap an amazing night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where we both were in attendance to watch the Indiana Pacers run away with Game 6. We walk through the biggest moments and top contributors, and talk about the atmosphere leading into the game. We then preview Game 7 between the Pacers and the Thunder --- talking through the keys for both teams, looking at the statistics from the first six games of the series, and talking through what an NBA title would mean for the Pacers franchise and the city of Indianapolis.NOTE: We actually did make some predictions for this game, but recorded them as a separate video on our Substack, so go check it out there!
We welcome back Ben Portnoy from Sports Business Journal, as we continue to unpack the House Settlement and its effects on college sports. We discuss the NIL clearinghouse, the sudden wave of optimism in certain college sports leadership circles, how revenue sharing may end up working, and some of the other key elements that Ben is hearing about in his role as college sports business reporter.
On this episode of CrimsonCast, we take a look at the financial and organizational elements that have led to the current situation in college athletics. Huge increases in revenue, the creation of new television networks, and a lack of willingness to include athletes in the business structure have combined with predictable court rulings that leave the current system in a precarious position. We aren't sure where it's going yet, but this podcast gives you some sense of where it's been and how it evolved over time.(NOTE: The audio version of this podcast on Apple has the intro music, while the video version on YouTube and Spotify does not due to some techincal issues. Apologies and we'll do better next time!)
Welcome to the post-settlement era. At 9 PM eastern on Friday June 6th, the presiding judge in the House settlement approved the terms of the deal --- effectively waving the green flag on an era where athletes can be paid directly by athletic departments, where NIL deals are evaluated through a fair market value system, and where schools can opt in (or opt out) of being a part of top-level college athletics. We talk through the terms of the settlement and look ahead to some of the challenges that college athletics likely will face as a result of this. Later on in the show, we discuss the Pacers improbable Game 1 victory, and what that might mean for the rest of the series.
We're back with more Pacers talk, as Scott and GC are joined by Tony Adragna to talk about the team's exciting 4-2 series win over the Knicks and preview the NBA Finals matchup against the Thunder. We discuss how the Pacers got here in terms of roster construction, how they beat the Knicks, and how they match up against Oklahoma City.
Galen and Scott throw down some non-IU content, talking about their experiences at this year's Indianapolis 500 --- from the weather issues to the lack of exciting racing down the stretch to the tech inspection issues that overshadowed so much of the race this year. We then pivot to our experiences at Games 3 and 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals. We discussed the Pacers on-court matchup with the Knicks and how it has evolved over the series, the wild atmosphere for Game 4 in Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and what to expect for the rest of the series.
Scott and the doctor are joined by Jeremy Gray, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for IU Athletics, to talk about the long-awaited return of Hoosier The Bison -- an actual mascot for Indiana. Jeremy talks through the background of the bison as a mascot concept at IU, the student-led movement that took things to the next level over the past few years, and the creative process behind the reveal of the new mascot.
Taylor Lehman of Bite-Sized Bison joins DoctorGC to talk IU football! We recap Indiana's spring season, discussing the transfer portal additions that the Hoosiers made and how they have shaped the roster for the upcoming season. We also take an in-depth look at each of the position groups and get Taylor's thoughts on where they stand --- and how they stack up against Big Ten competition. We also discuss some of IU's recent recruiting successes, and why the 2026 class feels different from past years. Finally, we look at IU's SP+ projections for the 2025 season, how those compare to 2024's projections, and the pivot games that Indiana will need to win this year.
Scott and Galen revive a yearly tradition --- it's Indy 500 preview time! We start off by talking about our observations from watching old races on YouTube, with a focus on the 1983 Indianapolis 500 broadcast. We then move to discussing the bizarre series of events that took place over the course of qualifying weekend, including a rookie winning the pole and Team Penske suffering yet another inspection violation. We go through the field, talking about some of the storylines of the various drivers and which ones have the best chance to win. Finally we give our race predictions, and preview the weather for race day.
We welcome Zach Browning from The Hoosier and On3 to talk about the recent recruiting successes for IU football, how this class looks a lot different than classes in the past, and what message Curt Cignetti and his staff have for potential recruits. We then pivot to basketball (25:58) and talk about the flood of official offers and visits that we are seeing from the men's program. We discuss the areas of impact in recruiting from Drew Adams, Rod Clark, and Kenny Johnson, the types of players that Darian DeVries is going after, and how this recruiting cycle is a unique one for the program.
Scott and Galen tackle the NBA, as we preview the looming Pacers-Knicks series in the Eastern Conference Finals. We discuss everything that has changed for the Pacers since a conversation that we had two years ago at IMS, and what it is about this current Indiana team build that works so well. We also discuss how similar the Pacers feel to the Indiana teams of the 1990s, and how the current landscape of the NBA actually feels more friendly to this type of team than what we saw in those days. We also take a look at what the key elements of this matchup are likely to be, and give our series predictions.
We take to the live airwaves to cover a bevy of topics, including the slow-motion car crash of the House Settlement, Kentucky Athletics becoming an LLC, Arkansas exempting NIL payments from taxation and FOIA requests, and the real dangers awaiting college sports. We also talk about Indiana men's basketball and their recent recruiting offer spree, IU football's schedule and over-under projections, the national media's love affair with Illinois, and an update on the Bloomington Pizza Scene.
A relatively quick podcast --- well, relatively quick by CrimsonCast standards, at least --- talking about IU football's new portal commitment from California, the increasingly confusing NIL space and the possibility of an executive order (and why that won't matter much), a short update on Bloomington restaurants, and a few other items left over from this week's listener questions.
Scott and the doctor dive into the CrimsonCast mailbag, and field a bunch of questions about IU football and IU basketball. We discuss IU football fending off big programs for assistant coaches and players, what fan expectations in 2025 should reasonably be, and what the attendance is likely to look like in August and September. We also discuss whether IU men's basketball really *needs* a rim protector, how roster construction is likely to look in future years, how this current roster is likely to compete in the Big Ten and NCAA tournament, and whether or not there is hope for an equitable NIL/portal system in the future.
On Friday 4/25, the CrimsonCast crew and Tony Adragna did an emergency podcast to talk about the three newest IU men’s basketball signings - Nick Dorn, Jason Drake, and Sam Alexis - and how they fit into the roster. We talk about the strengths of each new player, play some video to see them in action, and try to get a sense of what Darian DeVries is cooking.
It is Little 500 week in Bloomington, so it's time to preview the races! Zion Brown and Austin Platt, play-by-play commentators for the 2025 Women's Little 500 and Men's Little 500 (respectively) join the show to preview both fields and talk about their experiences in broadcasting the race.
Indiana has some new portal signings! Jasai Miles and Tayton Conerway were announced as new transfers for the Hoosiers on Wednesday night, continuing a great week for Darian DeVries and his staff as they continue to assemble the 2025-26 roster. GC is joined by Tony Adragna, Ryan Phillips, and Jerod Morris as they break down the new additions and how they fit in with the rest of the team as it currently stands.
Taylor Lehman of Bite Sized Bison rejoins the show after a long absence to talk about the IU Football spring game taking place on Thursday 4/17 at 8 PM at Memorial Stadium. We discuss some of the things that stood out from last year's spring game, the importance of the game in recruiting, some key position groups to look at, and how to watch the spring game like an informed fan.Scott then joins the show to talk some IU men's basketball. We reflect on the Lamar Wilkerson commitment and discuss some of the perceptional differences between last year and this year in terms of portal signings, systems of play, and the atmosphere around the program. We then discuss what lies ahead in roster building, and why there is room for both optimism and careful consideration in evaluating what Indiana has done so far in the portal.
A short weekend update as we discuss some IU football spring practice items, IU basketball coaching and recruiting updates, and some NCAA sports updates.
Scott is joined by Ryan Phillips of Assembly Call for their regular two co-pilots show.  They chat about the current NCAA Tournament, which leads to a Kelvin Sampson discussion, leading to some historical IU talk, before they un-pack some of the Woodson era and wrap up with their thoughts on the current state of the program and what lies ahead.
We are joined today by KMOX sports director Tom Ackerman! In this episode, Tom gives his thoughts on the Darian DeVries hire and recounts his observations from seeing DeVries as the head coach at Drake. We also discuss the keys to getting IU basketball back into a nationally competitive position, and learn about Tom's history with the university.
Scott and Galen are back, talking about Indiana men's basketball and the various roster and coaching moves happening within the program. No news is not necessarily bad at this stage, so we talk through the elements at play and discuss how the timetable for roster additions may have changed a bit from what was initially anticipated. We also discuss the impact of available money on the roster moves, the need to balance productivity and potential with financial resources, and the fortuante position that Indiana is in compared to some of its competitors. We finish with a deeper look at the current trends in college basketball around efficiency numbers and how Indiana will hopefully be part of that movement moving forward.
On this episode, we dive to a question from a listener about why there weren't the normal number of upsets in the NCAA men's basketball tournament this year. Lots of factors come into play, and we dive into several, including the huge jump in efficiency numbers this year, the NIL/portal impacts, and conference realignment.
IndyStar IU Insider Zach Osterman joins CrimsonCast to talk about the end of the Mike Woodson era, the coaching search process and how Indiana landed on Darian DeVries, the financial realities driving the upcoming roster changes that will likely take place, and why Indiana felt that DeVries was the right man for the moment.
Indiana has hired a new coach! Former West Virginia coach Darian DeVries is now the head man in Bloomington. We talk about the hire, DeVries' history at Drake and West Virginia, how this will impact IU's roster, who might come in from elsewhere, and a ton more.
On a spirited live edition of CrimsonCast, Scott and GC talk about Indiana's exclusion from the NCAA Tournament, the inconsistent logic applied by the committee, and the mistakes Indiana made in scheduling and style of play that left them on the outside looking in. That then led into an extensive and wide-ranging post-mortem on the season, including some thoughts on the state of the program, the treatment of fans, the issues with the Woodson era, and where the athletic department needs to start with the coaching search.
Happy Bracket Day to all of you. Indiana is squarely on the bubble for today's NCAA Tournament Selection Show. Where will the Hoosiers ultimately land? On this special live edition of CrimsonCast, we evaluate the possibilities and discuss which teams are in, which teams are out, and what the criteria are that the committee will be looking at.
Indiana lost to Oregon in their first Big Tournament game, throwing the Hoosiers into a waiting game for their NCAA tournament prospects. We talk about how the game went and where IU struggled, as well as how it impacts their spot in the NCAA Tournament field. We also discuss the comments from Oumar Ballo postgame, and talk about the online discourse in general. Then we discuss the coaching search updates, go deep again on Ben McCollum, and discuss some timing issues.
We had some technical issues with the live Sunday podcast, so here's a make-up show! Catch up on the latest news and analysis on Indiana's place in the NCAA tournament field, where they look to be seeded, and what impact the Big Ten Tournament might have on the Hoosiers' tourney chances. Plus, some talk on the coaching search, the keys for IU in the process, and the lack of available information.
We recap the weekend's action against Washington, discuss the black uniforms, and take a look at the seeding picture for the Big Ten Tournament. We then continue our evaluation of the ongoing search by going in-depth on four IU coaching candidates - Dusty May, Grant McCasland, Shaka Smart, and Todd Golden.
Indiana men's basketball continued their streak of effective play on Saturday, walloping Washington in Seattle and moving their overall record to 18-11. The win moved the Hoosiers into good position all the way around, as a single-digit seed in the Big Ten Tournament is still on the cards, and an NCAA Tournament bid looks more and more like a reality. We discuss the win, the implications, and what lies ahead this week for IU.The bracketology picture becomes clearer by the day, and we talk about the placement of Indiana compared to other teams in and around the bubble --- and what the Hoosiers need to do over the next two weeks to secure their spot in March Madness.
On the newest CrimsonCast, we take a look at Indiana’s most recent victory against Penn State, and discuss the lineup and coaching changes that have led the Hoosiers to some recent success — and whether what we’re seeing is sustainable. We then dive into the next round of coaching candidates for evaluation. In this batch we tackle some younger candidates, discussing Northwestern’s Chris Collins, Vanderbilt’s Mark Byington, McNeese’s Will Wade, and Ole Miss’s Chris Beard. We also talk about the recent news of TJ Otzelberger’s contract extension.
We start off Episode 1200 by discussing IU's loss to UCLA, the malaise that a lot of fans find themselves experiencing in not particularly caring about the outcome of the individual games, and the reality that IU is likely going to keep playing past the regular season due to some new contractual items with the Big Ten.We then move on to talking about the coaching search - discussing the origin of many of the coaches in the KenPom Top 20, how hires generally work out, and why the idea that Indiana has to go hire a coach from a top program is out of step with the realities of the college basketball coaching world.
We're joined by Tony Adragna, our BHN teammate, to talk about his most recent article on Assembly Call and discuss the IU men's basketball job. One of the main narrative points that has come up during recent searches has involved the relative qualtiy of the Indiana job --- with many media members outside of the IU sphere (and even a few in it, along with some fans) claiming that there's something inherently flawed with the job, and that it's not actually that attractive or that good as a destination. We explore that perspective by looking back at the past four-ish coaching hires, discussing the tenures of each coach, and evaluating some of the factors that have led to each tenure ultimately not being successful.
It's the first full week of Indiana men's basketball's coaching search, and speculation is rampant about who the Hoosiers might be targeting and what type of coach might be the best fit for Bloomington. We've heard several names bandied about already, but one that has been mysteriously absent --- and who I think deserves some special consideration.
We start off the show by reflecting on an enjoyable day at The Upstairs Pub with IU fans and our friends from across the Back Home Network, before talking about the Michigan loss and the overall vibe in Assembly Hall and Bloomington. We talk through the Woodson news, the things IU needs to immediately address in the hiring process, and reflect on how challenging the next 6-8 weeks may end up being for fans.
IU announced on Friday that Mike Woodson would not be returning as IU basketball coach next year, setting off an avalanche of speculation on who the new IU coach might be. Here's some quick thoughts on the announcement, the timing of things, and Indiana's status as a job in the college basketball landscape.
Indiana lost at Wisconsin, and things continue to not work for this team. We talk about the performance issues, the miles being put on one particular group of players, the postgame comments, and the road ahead.
Indiana played hard at Purdue, gave a good accounting of themselves (for the most part), but still lost. We talk about the effort and energy, but also the execution issues that continue to plague the team in the clutch. There are no simple answers - it appears to be a combination of roster construction issues, coaching issues, planning issues, communication issues, and other items. With no clear resolution on the cards, there's not much else to do but talk about it - hence this episode.
As Indiana gets ready to take on Purdue this Friday, a decent number of fans appear to think that the Hoosiers have already blown their shot at the tournament. The truth is that they have not --- yet --- but the trends are not positive, with IU having lost four of their last five games. However, Indiana's not that far outside the field right now. We dive into a variety of numbers to explore where IU sits as a team on the eve of February, and talk about what the Hoosiers need to do in order to get back on the right side of the cut line.
Back for Part 2 of our football check-in, Scott and GC dive into some more listener questions. We discuss the potential stadium expansion and what it should entail, the overall gameday experience at Memorial Stadium, the floor and ceiling of expectations for IU football in the wake of the 2024 season, and whether IU fans will keep coming to games.
Let's talk some football. Taylor Lehman joins the show as we deep-dive into everyone's new favorite sport. We discuss the outcome of the CFP and what we learned from it, go through IU's transfer portal haul and evaluate the positives and the areas that still need improvement. We also talk about the freshman class, the coaching staff, and take some listener questions.
Indiana men’s basketball continued their confusing season with an exciting and unpredictable chapter last night, traveling to Columbus and knocking off Ohio State by a point in overtime. It certainly wasn’t perfect, with IU surrendering a double-digit lead late and allowing OSU to force the extra frame, but strong games from Luke Goode and Oumar Ballo helped propel the Hoosiers to a much-needed victory. Longtime CrimsonCast contributor Allie Sanzenbacher was on the scene to watch the game, and we get her impressions of how the Hoosiers played, how the game went, and even a little Ohio State football talk at the very end.
Indiana men's basketball has some serious issues, most of which were laid bare in the 25-point home loss to Illinois earlier this week. We discuss the difficult situation that the program and the athletic department are in, and the likelihood that things get uncomfortable and unpleasant over the next two months.
Indiana came into Saturday night's game versus Iowa with a ton of momentum --- winners of five straight games, owners of a 4-1 record in the conference, and taking on an Iowa team that had a very casual relationship with good defense. Poised to potentially pick up a big Quad 1 win in Iowa City, the Hoosiers instead reverted back to a depressingly familiar form, getting blown out by 25 and looking incredibly passive while doing so. We talk about the disappointment of yet another underwhelming road performance, and discuss the difficult road ahead for the Hoosiers as they try to stay afloat in a competitive Big Ten for an NCAA tournament berth.
Part Two delves into Indiana's 10-point win against Rutgers on Thursday. There were some definite positives for IU in this game, particularly their three point shooting and offensive rebounding. There are also some still-worrying signs - including whether or not Indiana's performance at home against Rutgers is repeatable against stronger teams, as well as why the Hoosiers continue to struggle with consistency in games.
Part One of a two-part episode to ring in 2025! This first podcast talks through some of the narratives we saw and heard throughout the first two rounds of the College Football Playoff. Were Indiana fans right to feel aggrieved and picked upon in the process? Why did ESPN (and others) persist in pushing a narrative that has been undone by reality? GC goes solo on this as he talks through some of the key elements of what we've been exposed to over the last couple of months, and discusses the importance of narrative and framing in a sport as nakedly political as college football.
GC is joined by friend of the pod (and occasional contributor) IU Artifacts for a renewal of the Bloomington Food Revue. We tackle some of the big changes and happenings in town, including the sudden closure of Cafe Pizzaria and our memories of the place, the introduction of food at The Upstairs Pub and Heartwork Brewing (sort of), the arrival of Taco Bell Cantina on the east side and the overall dining scene there, and some other random items of interest. Hope you all had a delightful 2024, and may 2024 bring you greater wealth and health.
IU men's basketball finds itself in an uncomfortably familiar spot at the holiday break - as a team that has failed to rack up any tournament-caliber wins, with an advanced statistical profile that does not appear to be March Madness-caliber. We talk about the underwhelming performance of the team over the last couple of weeks, look at some of the key statistical indicators and analyze what they may mean, and ponder what the Hoosiers have to do to get over the ever-present hump.
Indiana's magical 2024 season came to a disappointing close on Friday, as the Hoosiers lost 27-17 on the road to Notre Dame. We discuss the game, with a lot of focus on Indiana's offensive struggles, Notre Dame's athleticism and defensive game plan, and the uncharacteristic lack of execution and efficiency from IU. We also talk about the season as a whole, trying to take in all the factors and items that made the year so special to so many people. And we spend some time taking aim at the toxic narratives that dominate college football discourse right now and where those come from.
We are delighted to welcome NBC Sports' Nicole Auerbach to the show. We chatted at length with Nicole about Indiana's magical season and the impact that Curt Cignetti has had on the program, as well as the investments the school has made in the program. We also talked in-depth about the matchup between Indiana and Notre Dame - what makes this one special in particular, how the weather may affect the game, how to evaluate both of these teams given their wins and losses, and what the keys to victory are for both.
James gives you all his picks for the CFP First Round, along witih some IU Props and the Hoosier Hotstreak. James is fired up (even for James), so be aware and prepared for some adult language.  ;)
Scott is joined by Tyler James from Inside ND Sports to preview the CFP game this Friday.  What does Notre Dame need to do to take control of the game?  What can IU do to win?  What will the vibe be like for a night game at Notre Dame Stadium, and some larger talk of now important is it for Notre Dame to join a conference?
Game day is getting ever closer, and the preview podcasts keep coming. We welcome the NFL Network's Rhett Lewis to the show to discuss the matchup between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Rhett gives us his evaluation on how the two teams compare, what sorts of things Indiana may be able to exploit in the matchup, the relative strengths of the teams, and the overall vibe of the game from Indiana's perspective.
Scott and Galen convene an episode of the podcast to talk through the big picture items related to Indiana vs Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff. We discuss the relative magnitude of the game, what it means for Indiana, how the fan bases of the Hoosiers and Fighting Irish are intertwined in a lot of ways, and the overall feelings both of us have going into Friday’s matchup.
Our friend Taylor Lehman of Bite Sized Bison joins us to talk about the Indiana - Notre Dame matchup. It's quite a contest on paper, featuring two teams that look almost lab-grown in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness. We discuss some of the major statistics and trends for both teams, the unit matchups, how the weather might affect what each team tries to do, and which personnel could play the biggest role. We also look back at both teams' performances this season and try to parse out what aspects are most likely to have an affect on the game.
We got Mitchell Paige back on the show by popular request! We discuss the amazing ride that Indiana football has been on since the last time we recorded an episode together, the building sense of pride that the former players have in the program and what's going on in Bloomington, and some of the key elements of the matchup between the Hoosiers and the Fighting Irish.
On this episode of Bison Chat, Joe and Galen catch you up on what happened this week with IU coach and player availability, with quotes from Curt Cignetti about this week's preparation for the CFP. On this week's Bison Chat, Galen and Joe look back on Indiana's record-setting win against Purdue in the Old Oaken Bucket game, and talk about the overall atmosphere of the game and everything around it. We then pivot to talking about Indiana's recruiting haul on National Signing Day and what the Hoosiers will be looking for in the transfer portal. Finally, we discuss Indiana's future in the College Football Playoff, with a look at what Indiana would like to have happen in the conference championship games this weekend, as well as some of their potential opponents.
Indiana men's basketball had a fairly disastrous trip to the Bahamas, losing their first two games in the Battle 4 Atlantis and showing that a bunch of problems from last year still haven't been resolved. We (finally) do our first proper basketball podcast of the year, talking about the lack of enthusiasm and general issues that hovered over the program this offseason, before diving in to look at the statistical realities of the current squad, their very real issues in terms of trying to build a tournament resume against a schedule that doesn't have a lot more opportunities for great wins, and what IU can try to do to get the season back on track.
Indiana capped off the greatest regular season in program history with a complete demolition job against Purdue, defeating the Boilermakers 66-0 on a glorious snowy night at Memorial Stadium. The Hoosiers showed up with extra motivation after last weekend's frustrating loss to Ohio State, and put any question of their offensive prowess or overall level of play to bed with a dominating performance. The win brought the Hoosiers' record to 11-1 on the campaign, and should see them sit securely on the right side of the bubble in the next CFP Rankings. We discuss Indiana's big win, scenarios for CFP seeding, and a bunch more.
A preview of the 2024 edition of the Old Oaken Bucket game, as 10-1 Indiana looks to move closer to a playoff berth. They take on a Purdue team that has struggled mightily this season. James gets you all the betting lines for the final week of the college football season, along with his Hooiser Hotstreak pick of the week.
A bit late due to some technical difficulties with uploading - thank you for your patience. On this week's Bison Chat, we take a look back at IU's difficult loss to Ohio State, look ahead to the Old Oaken Bucket Game, and live-react to the latest CFP Committee rankings.
The Hoosiers had big aspirations for their top-5 matchup versus Ohio State in Columbus, but a fast start was quickly soured by mistakes, scheme issues, and old-fashioned physical dominance by the Buckeyes. We discuss what went wrong for Indiana, the aspects of the game that led to the defeat, and what it means in the big picture. We also take a look at the CFP rankings and analyze what the committee will probably do when they release the updated rankings on Tuesday.
Scott and Galen reunite after an extensive week of podcasting content to talk about what awaits us this weekend as Indiana takes on Ohio State. We discuss the discourse that has made up the last several days, Indiana's place in the CFP order, and what (if anything) Indiana "owes" college football's media establishment in this game. Plus other stuff!
James and Scott break down all the lines in the B1G this week, quickly, so they can talk all about the IU v OSU game this weekend.  Also, get your Hoosier Hotstreak picks for the weekend.
We are joined by longtime friend of the pod Stefak Krajisnik to talk about Indiana-Ohio State this weekend. Stefan (who covers Ohio State for Cleveland.com) talks us through the overall atmosphere among the Buckeyes fanbase coming into a game that matters a great deal to both teams. We also discuss some of the various matchups and factors - the relative statistical similarities between these two teams, the weather forecast, the physical matchups, and the

We go deep on a number of fronts relating to the game, including Indiana's mentality coming into the contest, the advantages that the bye week potentially gave to the IU coaching staff, the key matchups in the trenches, and the importance of IU finding a way to match up against Ohio State's skill position talent.
On this edition of Bison Chat, Joe and Galen recap the weekend, as we discuss Curt Cignetti's extension and what it means for IU athletics. We also hear from Cignetti as he discusses Ohio State, as we break down some of the key items related to the huge upcoming showdown in Columbus. Finally, we do our newly traditional live breakdown of the CFP rankings, with some analysis of what the committee did this week and what it means for Indiana.
On the latest edition of CrimsonCast, we sit down for a lengthy and enjoyable interview with Dane Sanzenbacher, former Ohio State WR, former NFL player, and currently an analyst on 97.1 FM in Columbus. We discuss Dane's very unique connection to Indiana University (and CrimsonCast), and then dive deep into the various aspects of this top-5 matchup. We talk about the mentalities of both teams, the surprisingly even statistical profiles of both, the advantages Ohio State may have in this type of a game, but also the benefits Indiana may enjoy from this particular matchup at this particular time.
Suck Month continues, as we enter Ohio State Week --- and the stakes are huge. IU arrives ranked in the top 5, taking on another top 5 team in the Buckeyes. Indiana and Curt Cignetti signed a contract extension and raise on Saturday, upping his guaranteed salary to $9 million per year and lengthening the deal through 2032. We do an emergency podcast to digest the news and talk about why this is so important for IU athletics and Indiana football specifically.
Indiana is on a bye this week, but many of the teams they are competing against for a CFP bid are in action. Which results are best for the Hoosiers? Matt Blaszka joins the podcast as we discuss some of the games and potential outcomes for this weekend. (Note that Matt was on the phone for this interview, so some of the audio quality isn't as good as normal. Thanks for your patience!)
The Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, in one of the most monumental victories in school history. The Hoosiers rode some solid offensive execution to a first half lead, then white-knucked their way to a victory in the second half thanks largely to their defense and special teams. It was the first time that IU has truly been tested for a full 60 minutes, and they figured out a way to pull out the win. We discuss the game in detail, talk about the CFP implications, and evaluate what's coming up next for the Hoosiers.
Taylor Lehman of Bite Sized Bison joins the show for our weekly Thursday Indiana football preview show. This week, we break down Indiana's game this Saturday against Michigan, who won the CFP title last season, but has looked far from that standard this season. We discuss where Michigan's biggest issues have been so far this year, what things they do well, and how they match up against the Hoosiers, both through traditional and advanced statistical analysis. We also talk about Indiana's keys to success, what opportunities they have to exploit their opponent's weaknesses, and what Michigan needs to have happen for the game to go their way.
James plan for the weekend, why to stay away from the UCLA spread, why the Gophers are going to easily cover the spread, some other lines on the OSU game, why Oregon can easily cover their spread, James tries to piss off Taylor Swift fans, why Penn State is a stay away, finally they talk about the IU game and why he loves the line on Fan Duel and why IU is going to cover any line you find.  Finally James gives us his Hoosier Hotstreak pick for the week, after we lick our wounds from last week.
Scott is joined by Jeremy Gray - IU Senior Associate Athletic Director to talk about the origin story behind the Cignetti shirts and rally towels at Memorial Stadium.  They talk about the success they have been thus far, if they will continue, along with all the improved marketing efforts around Memorial Stadium the past few years, before Scott opens up the comment box to throw out a few ideas to Jeremy.  Stay Never Daunted!
On this week’s Bison Chat, we give immediate reaction to the College Football Playoff Committee’s initial set of rankings, discussing where IU fell in those rankings, and how that affects the season moving forward. We also tackle some of the inconsistencies in the committee’s rankings. Then we turn our attention to last weekend’s game, discussing Indiana’s big 47-10 win over Michigan State. Finally we turn our attention to the upcoming game versus the Michigan Wolverines, discussing what IU needs to do to against Michigan and what the Wolverines do well.
Indiana traveled to East Lansing, to face what many pundits thought would be a trap game. Instead, it was a complete destruction of Michigan State, as Indiana overcame a slow start to beat the Spartans 47-10. The Hoosiers got perhaps their best defensive performance of the year, and QB Kurtis Rourke recovered from a thumb injury to throw four touchdown passes. We break down everything positive that happened in the game, and discuss the Hoosiers' ability to bounce back from adversity and the staff's ability to adjust in-game. We also talk about a huge upcoming week for Indiana, as they get ready to face Michigan at home in a game that could take the program to unseen vistas. Finally, we discuss the college football playoff and the committee's upcoming rankings.
Scott & James are back for Week 10 B1G betting lines. We had one technical problem during the recording, but didn't have time to edit it out, so apologize for that.  Enjoy!
Indiana travels to East Lansing for a matchup against the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday. Is this a trap game for the Hoosiers? Will Kurtis Rourke be at 100%? What are the biggest threats to the Hoosiers in this one, and how can they exploit weaknesses in Michigan State's game? We tackle all of that and more in a live podcast previewing the contest.
The Indiana Hoosiers continued to roll this past weekend, defeating the Washington Huskies 31-17 before the second straight sellout crowd of the 2024 season. It wasn't always pretty, as IU struggled with a misfiring offense and some defensive mistakes --- but a second-half focus on the ground game and some opportune plays on defense and in special teams pushed Indiana to their first 8-win season since 2019 --- with four regular-season games still to play. We discuss Indiana's performance, the keys to the victory, and the impressive, workmanlike nature of the Hoosiers in this game. We also talk about the ESPN College GameDay experience, the towels, the crowd, and the road ahead for the Hoosiers as they get ready to travel to Michigan State this upcoming Saturday.
Indiana is 7-0, already bowl eligible, with fans dreaming of bigger things. They face the Washington Huskies for the first time in Big Ten conference play on Saturday, so we brought Taylor Lehman on to talk about the matchup between these two teams. We talk through the main aspects of the matchup, including Washington's high talent levels, their strengths in the secondary, and the interesting decisions IU will have in terms of how to attack the Huskies. We also talk through Washington's strengths and weaknesses on defense, and take a look at the areas that IU might be able to exploit. It's a huge weekend in Bloomington, with ESPN College Gameday in town. Can the Hoosiers cut through the noise and move their record to 8-0?
Scott & James are back for CrimsonCASH.  Scott is on vacation, so it's a quick episode with no description.
We're joined on this episode by former Indiana wide receiver Mitchell Paige to talk about this year's football team. We cover a bunch of fun aspects of present and past, including the keys to the roster that make this year's team so good, the coaching staff's approach to getting this level of excellence out of the roster, the difference between this team and past Hoosier football squads, and the emotion that longtime IU fans are feeling towards watching both the team and the fans embrace and celebrate football so wholeheartedly this season.
We welcome back Zach Osterman of the Indy Star to the podcast to talk about Indiana football. We talk through the way Indiana's season has going, the confidence the Hoosiers are playing with and how the coaching staff has instilled that, the evolution of the team throughout the course of the season, the Nebraska game performance and how that fits into the narrative of the season, the dominance that IU has shown in multiple statistical phases of the game, and the unique aspects of this 12-team CFP playoff that tie in to IU's fanbase and place in college football.
Longtime friend of the pod Ben Portnoy of Sports Business Journal joins us for an action-packed episode. We cover a ton of ground here - the scene this past weekend that surrounded Indiana vs Nebraska, the slow but steady climb that Indiana University Athletics has undertaken to modernize the football program, and how different things are from 15 years ago. We also talk about ESPN College Gameday coming to town and how important that is for the program, the hiring of Curt Cignetti and why it has worked so well, and what it would do for Indiana football and the Athletics Program if they end up in the CFP.
We ended up recording a giddy live edition of the weekly recap podcast, as we looked back in satisfaction and awe of the Indiana Hoosiers' 56-7 defenestration of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. On the show, we dove deep into Indiana's dominance in all three phases of the game, the remarkable job done by the offensive line, the insane rushing attack, and the consistency and aggressiveness of the defense. We also talk about Kurtis Rourke's injury, Tayven Jackson's laudable pinch-hitting performance at QB, and the great job that the coaches continue to do.We also discuss the overall atmosphere in Bloomington and around the stadium yesterday, one of the greatest advertisements for IU football that we've ever seen - FOX Sports and Barstool both on site, a beautiful weather day, and an electric atmosphere inside a sold-out Memorial Stadium. This is a fun show, hope you enjoy it.
Scott & James and back for another week of CrimsonCASH.   This week they talk about why Oregon State's schedule factors into the Purdue vs Oregon game, Rutgers scoring issues, why we both like the Northwestern QB, why the Michigan  v Illinois game will go over, why James likes some home dogs this week, and why the Hoosiers will cover their 6.5 point spread.   Finally they give out this week’s Hoosier Hotstreak, along with some NBA future bets and thoughts.
On this edition of Bison Chat, Galen and Joe talk about the long bye week for Indiana Football, before diving fully into the upcoming game versus Nebraska. We hear some quotes from both Curt Cignetti and Matt Rhule about this weekend's matchup between the Hoosiers and the Huskers. We also take questions from the audience about Indiana's playoff futures, the idea of Nebraska as an underdog to Indiana, the concessions situation at Memorial Stadium, and Joe's LED lights.  Bison Chat is produced by Emily Fox.
Scott and James are back to look at the lines for this week’s B1G games.  James tells you why the Washington v Iowa game is his favorite bet this weekend, why he never takes the points on large lines but is doing it against Purdue, his hate for the alternative Ohio State jerseys, if Minnesota can break the streak of teams not named IU losing when they go west.  With no IU game this weekend, no Hoosier Hotstreak, but we do put together a 4 team B1G parlay for you, along with the “You Asked For It” fan submitted parlay.
Scott is joined by Alex Bozich of Inside the Hall to chat about how he started ITH, why Ohio State stinks with media credentials, what drives traffic on their site, what (if anything) IU needs to do to get back to being an elite program and what are traditions that they would and wouldn’t touch.
On a giddy episode of CrimsonCast, Scott and Galen take a look at the big picture for the 6-0 Indiana Hoosiers. We discuss the huge change in mentality and execution that has powered the Hoosiers to an undefeated start and bowl eligibility, and the key factors that are feeding this amazing season. We then break down the game at Northwestern, talking about Indiana’s incredibly impressive offensive execution, how the Hoosiers defensive effort was better than it appeared during the game, and the incredible crowd support that IU fans gave the team in Evanston. Finally, we engage in some Scott Fever Dreamcasting, discussing where Indiana’s rankings could end up and looking ahead to the slate of games in October and November.
James starts off with his thoughts on the IU vs Maryland game experience, ideas for ways to get the crowd pumped at Memorial Stadium between the 3rd and 4th quarters.  He then gives his thoughts about why Purdue might cover their spread, why not to bet the UCLA vs PSU game, why he’s taking an under in a game that doesn’t include Iowa, why Michigan could be a good upset pick on the money line.   Finally, James puts together a great set of bets to keep the Hoosier Hotstreak alive this week.
On this episode of the Tuesday Night Bison Chat, GC and Joe Cronin are joined by NBC Sports and Indiana Rivals reporter Zach Browning. We discuss Indiana football's big win over the Maryland Terrapins, the sudden but not entirely unexpected departure of Donovan McCulley, and the matchup this weekend in Evanston as the Hoosiers get ready to take on the Northwestern Wildcats. The Hoosiers currently lead the Big Ten Conference, and look to attain bowl eligibility at a highly unusual early point in the season (for Indiana, at least!).
Indiana pushed their 2024 record to 5-0 on the season with a 42-28 win over the Maryland Terrapins. Scott and Galen break down what happened at a wet and wild Memorial Stadium on Saturday, discussing the collective will of the team and coaching staff, the standout statistical performers, and the most impressive parts of the victory for the Hoosiers. We also discuss the overall gameday atmosphere in and around the stadium, the fun that everyone had throughout, the impressive showing by the student body, and the feeling of something being very different with this vintage of IU football. Finally, we discuss the matchup vs Northwestern coming up this next weekend, and Indiana's overall positioning as the Hoosiers head into October.

We are also joined by James Williams of USA Today who gives us some perspective on the Bruins and new head coach Deshaun Foster.
Scott & James are back for another week of B1G gambling picks.   There was a slight audio issue with James’s mic in the first few minutes.  With getting ready to fly out, I didn’t have time to edit it, so after a few seconds of dead air, things get back on track.  James starts off with his Cannonball Run movie idea for this weekend before getting into the B1G picks for this week.  Learn why Michigan won’t cover, why he loves Illinois, why Purdue can easily cover over ND, why the Iowa point under is always a good bet, why he hates Maryland, and his thoughts on how to bet the IU v UCLA game.

James joins Scott for another season of B1G gambling picks. So many B1G games.  So many big lines this week.  And James throws down some great reasons why it's smart (and fun) to bet the team point under for Western Michigan this week, and this season.
CrimsonCast's founders stake their claims to the upcoming season's results, as we go game-by-game through the 2024 schedule and project wins and losses for each week. We both land in a pretty optimistic place --- which will likely lead to some skepticism and derision from certain circles --- but there are a variety of factors at play that could lead to this being a pretty special season for IU football. A soft schedule, a Big Ten with multiple teams in huge transition, and some really promising parts of the Hoosiers roster are all hard things to ignore. Drop your own predictions and analysis in the comments, and we'll see who's right at the end of the season.

Where are things located? On today’s podcast, I take a look at the new NCAA CFB 25 college football video game. I’ve been playing it for a week now and have some observations on where the game is doing well, but also where there are problems. At this point the game is neither a home run nor a catastrophe, and we delve into the details in the first segment. Then (21:30) it’s on to covering the latest in the NIL / House settlement, and why it hasn’t gotten here yet. There’s some unfortunate but predictable infighting going on in the settlement process, and a real chance that the court refuses to accept the settlement even if those items are solved. I talk a bit about those items and how the courts might evaluate the situation as a whole.
On a weekend edition of CrimsonCast, GC takes a look at the recently announced IU men’s basketball non-conference schedule. Was it a smart set of scheduling decisions? New podcast! GC goes solo on this one, and tackles the Langdon Hatton acquisition, the open scholarship left, and some larger questions regarding player devleopment and the portal. We also tackle some items on the Bloomington restaurant scene, the current state of the NCAA's legal woes, plus questions about a college basketball video game and the Indy 500.

We look at the developments on the men's basketball roster since mid-April, the projections and predictions starting to come in from various corners of the college basketball analytics community about the team, and what the big questions are that need to be answered. We also talk about the surprising news that Creighton is pulling out of Atlantis this year, where they are headed, and what it might mean for the college basketball landscape. Attention then pivots to football where we discuss the attention being given to IU football from across the social media landscape, the talent ratings of the various positions on the roster, and how that might correlate to success in the fall. We also discuss some truly gamebreaking trends going on with college football rosters across the landscape and why the NCAA needs to figure something out quickly.

What are they going to do next year? A lot of it depends on what happens in the next two weeks, and that whole process gets discussed. The Sweet 16 is happening, and on the men's side, an interesting trend has started to emerge regarding offense vs defense. On this live edition of CrimsonCast, GC takes people on a tour of the predictive metrics - KenPom, Torvik, the NET - and discusses how and why Indiana continues to struggle in all of them. He also talks through Indiana's path through the Big Ten Tournament, why the Hoosiers will need to win the conference tournament to have any shot at the NCAA tournament, and how some other teams' NET numbers work. Since this podcast was done as a live stream with visuals, it's probably better for you to watch it (as opposed to just listening to it). So if you'd like to do that, you can find the permanent link to the video here: Understanding the Predictives (YouTube Version).

Indiana had a roller coaster of a game at Maryland on Sunday, surrendering multiple double-digit runs to the Terrapins and falling behind by 16 points early in the second half, before an offensive rally the likes of which we haven't seen this year and some improved defensive effort netted the Hoosiers a road win and a season sweep. Scott and GC talk through what we saw in the game, how the Hoosiers have struggled with consistency throughout the season, and how today's game fits into the larger narrative of the 2023-24 season.

It's a fascinating window into a critical period of IU football history, and we appreciate Chris taking the time to give us his perspective on how things went during those years.
Some thoughts after IU's 20 point loss in West Lafayette. Fair warning - we've gone over a lot of this ground before, since many of the issues with the team seem to revert back to a combination of roster construction, system, and culture. So if you feel up to speed on those items, you can probably skip this episode. Also at the end - some bonus thoughts on Saturation Theory as it relates to media coverage, pop stars, women's basketball, TV commercials, and media.

It is Bye Week for IU basketball, which means it's a good time to check in with Back Home Network patriarch and Assembly Call host Jerod Morris to talk about what we've witnessed out of IU men's basketball this year. There's some discussion of recruiting ramifications, portal usage, and what exactly makes IU an attractive destination for players moving forward. We also discuss our thoughts on how this season is likely to end, and what sorts of things IU can do to ensure that the program's trajectory is in good shape headed into the offseason, given what's already occured this season.
Zach Osterman of the Indy Star joins the podcast for a discussion about the forces surrounding the reactions to IU men's basketball struggling this season. Are fans being unfair in evaluating a team that most thought would have to take a step back this season? Does the current coaching staff have to pay for the sins of previous coaching staffs? That and more, plus some talk at the end about the first two months of the Cignetti era of IU football, on this episode of CrimsonCast.

Scott and James are back to give you the bets for the last week of regular season B1G play!
On this episode of CrimsonCast, DoctorGC goes solo in previewing this year's edition of the Old Oaken Bucket game. Both Indiana and Purdue have been really bad this season, in a number of ways. This year's edition of the game will probably be one of the least important editions of the series, since neither team has anything to play for. Can Indiana figure out a way to play better defense and slow down a potentially potent Purdue passing attack? Can Purdue figure out how to move the ball?Tune in this weekend as we will have our regular postgame recap podcast, as well as a separate end-of-season recap show.

Indiana's dreams of a 6-6 season and a bowl bid ended very prematurely on Saturday, as they lost a shootout to Illinois 48-45 in overtime. For once, Indiana's offense showed up ready to party --- but Indiana's defense struggled throughout. We discuss the disappointing aspects of the loss, and contemplate another season without a postseason.
Indiana comes off a big win at home vs Wisconsin and now faces a unique opportunity. Win three games and make it to a bowl. How realistic is that? Finally, want to hear what's it's like to try and do a podcast while a bunch of kids are ringing your doorbell? All this and more on this week's episode!
Indiana did something that it has rarely done in the last 30 years, and that is beat Wisconsin. Scott and Galen recap the unexpected but eminently welcome victory over the Badgers by looking back at what the keys to success for the team were. We discuss the defense showing up and making plays when it mattered, the cool efficiency of QB Brendan Sorsby, and the surprising decisions down the stretch by both teams. We also discuss the remote possibility of IU getting itself bowl eligible, and what it would take for that to become a reality.
Indiana played much better last week, and despite losing to Penn State 33-24, there were finally some causes for optimism among the fans. Is what we saw sustainable? The Hoosiers will find out this week, as they host a Wisconsin team that hasn't exactly looked like a group of world-beaters. We discuss the lessons learned from last week, where Wisconsin may be vulnerable, and the three keys for Indiana going into Saturday's game.

This is an inadvertant two-part podcast. Part 1 was recorded second, in the immediate aftermath of IU's announcement that offensive coordinator Walt Bell had been relieved of his duties. We discuss our thoughts on that, as well as where it sits within the larger soap opera of IU football's 2023 vintage.Part 2 was our regularly scheduled Maryland recap podcast. We chat about the listlessness of IU on both sides of the ball, the disappointing lack of progress, and the challenges facing the program as they move foward with "evaluations" and whatnot.
Indiana escaped last week with a lucky two-point win in 4 overtimes against Akron. The challenge is significantly stiffer this week as the Hoosiers travel to College Park to take on a red hot Maryland team. Can IU rise to the challenge? Can the Hoosiers get their offense on track? Will Indiana's defense start to flash more of the promise they showed in the first half against Ohio State? We tackle those answers and look at the statistics that could decide this game.
James and Scott are back for Week 5 of a smaller B1G Slate of games. They review all the lines and provide a final review of the IUFB v Akron game. Galen gives his early record prediction, while Scott doesn't commit to a number, but rather a finishing position in the conference.
Indiana gave us a classic mixed bag performance against Louisville, coming back from a big deficit at halftime only to lose 21-14. We try to parse out the positives from the negatives, discuss the decisions and playcalling that led to the outcome, and evaluate some of the performances from individual players throughout the contest.

We re-enter the atmosphere of IU sports podcasting with a bit of a "state-of-the-program" talk about IU football as the 2023 season approaches. There's a lot to talk about on this one, so we dive in and discuss the general trajectory of the program, what to make of the Allen coaching era and how it compares to previous eras of IU football, and why there are reasons for feelings of both optimism and pessimism in 2023. Indiana men's basketball picked up a huge win on the recruiting trail, pulling in 5 star forward Mackenzie Mgbako and further strengthening their 2023-24 roster. After a long week which saw most IU fans pre-emptively throwing in the towel due to Mgbako's perceived interest in Kansas, the fact that Indiana ended up being the final choice ends up further flipping the narrative on Mike Woodson's program and approach to recruiting. Are this game and the Rutgers game must-wins? Who's more likely to be right --- the pessimist on the podcast who thinks IU comes up short, or the optimist who thinks IU has demonstrated they're ready and able to rise to the challenge of these sorts of games?
DoctorGC gives a 2023 update on some new spots you may want to check out in the Bloomington Food Scene --- as well as some old favorites that have gotten facelifts or other work done.

Scott and DoctorGC ruminate on the Northwestern game and ponder whether IU's season is the subject of an enveloping crisis. Is it time to panic after a five-week stretch where the Hoosiers have barely looked functional and engaged, or is the team simply injury-riddled but otherwise fine? Is the team merely suffering from a momentary lull or are there deeper concerns at play? Are these the baseless ravings of overreactionary schmucks or concerned analysis from trained observers who've seen this movie too many times before?

We've broken down the addition of USC and UCLA from a variety of perspectives, but we haven't talked about the impact of the move on the psyche and mentality of Pac 12 or west coast fans. Fortunately, we have longtime friend of the pod Matt Zimmerman --- a native Angelino and a sports expert --- who was willing to join the show and give his perspective. We talk about USC/UCLA sports culture, recruiting in SoCal, the implications of the Pac 12 becoming a shadow of its former self, and what the next moves might be (or should be) for both the Big Ten and the SEC.
DoctorGC is joined by the IndyStar's Zach Osterman to talk about the Big Ten's addition of USC and UCLA to the conference, the implications for college sports as a whole, and what might happen next --- both to Indiana athletics and the broader world of college football.

Scott and Galen are back with a nearly two-hour episode, talking about Trayce Jackson-Davis's return to IU and what it might mean for the Hoosiers next year, where Indiana's improvements may come from in terms of long range shooting, and what the expectations for this team are now that the roster is set. At about the hour-15 mark we switch to football and field some questions about this vintage of IU gridiron play. We talk about our levels of excitement for the season, what we're looking out for in terms of roster composition and production, and whether there's a pathway to IU's previous successes.
On this episode of CrimsonCast, we tackle some questions and concepts about IU basketball as we head into mid-April. We discuss roster composition, how to evaluate the incoming recruits (and what to expect / not expect), and how this offseason might be remembered. We're back, as Tony Adragna and Father James Pierce sit down to chat IU basketball, roster movement, and what Indiana's defense might do next year if there are any defections from the group of post players currently on the roster. We also talk about the crowded backcourt, the three pointer as a function of the personnel on the roster, and the Brian Walsh hire.
The IU Women's Basketball team is in the Sweet 16, taking on the Habsburg Empire of women's college ball, the UConn Huskies. We talk with IndyStar reporter Matt Cohen and Indiana Daily Student reporter Amanda Foster about the Hoosiers' 2nd round win over Princeton, the lead-up to Saturday's game, the matchup vs UConn, and what happened in the pre-game press conferences on Friday.
After a quiet few days, Indiana men's basketball news has started to come hot and heavy --- to the point that this was recorded just a few hours ago and is ALREADY out of date. We're joined by the Indy Star's Zach Osterman to discuss the departure of Dane Fife, the likely departure of Khristian Lander, the season that was, and the offseason that needs to be.
The surest way to guarantee that news will happen in IU basketball is to record a podcast about the status quo, and that's exactly what happened here. Still, this was a fun and enjoyable discussion about some of the roster and statistical aspects of this past year and some items to look forward to for next year, featuring our friend, Father James Pierce, who makes his triumphant return to the show after an 8 year absence.

THIS IS NOT AN INDIANA SPORTS EPISODE. Instead, Galen talks with longtime friend Sam Dewig, who is in the throes of deciding on a European soccer (football) team to support. And she has questions! Let's face it, European soccer is a bit confusing in how it is set up at the highest levels, even for those of us who have been following it for years. Sam asks the questions, Galen tries to give the answers to the best of his ability (even if he accidentally referred to the Supercoppa as the Coppa Italia at one point). If you're European football-curious, or even if you've just been through this whole process before yourself and want to relive it, you'll find something to like about this episode. And probably something to dislike, too.
On this episode, Scott and GC are back with:- A recap of the IU wins over Ohio State and Minnesota- A discussion of defense and lineups- Some Tamar Bates talk- A look at Trey Galloway's big return- An evaluation of the upcoming game vs IowaWe also talk about football a bit, including:- The change at defensive coordinator- The influx of transfer players- The challenges facing IU football in the NIL era
Indiana lost at Penn State. Lots of people were irritated about the loss (justifiably so!) but is it a harbinger of larger issues or just a bump in the road? We talk about lessons from the game, as well as taking a look at IU's current NCAA tournament chances.

We discuss both of those situations and give an update on our thoughts regarding the direction that IU football appears to be headed.

We compare and contrast the seasons from these two teams, discuss what Indiana needs to do in order to stay competitive in this contest, and give a prediction for how we think the game will turn out.
Galen and Scott are back, talking about Indiana men's basketball --- and we're joined by Back Home Network co-contributor Tony Adragna. We talk about the start of the basketball season and give our observations and impressions of the Hoosiers through the first four games. We then talk about some of the individual pieces of this team and discuss what we've seen so far --- from the impressive changes in Trayce Jackson-Davis's overall game to the key of Race Thompson's role in the offense. We also discuss the backcourt and some of the interesting play styles that IU's guards are exhibiting, and what it all might mean later on in the season.
We start the podcast with some heartfelt thoughts and hopes for a member of the IU football family who is dealing with some significant health issues. The rest of the podcast delves into the loss to Minnesota, and the larger problems and implications that were on display on Saturday.

We then switch to men's basketball and delve into what we've seen over the first two games. A very disappointing season refuses to become less disappointing, as IU falls 29-7 in Ann Arbor. It was a listless, injury-filled performance that did little but confirm that Indiana isn't going bowling this year. We discuss the outcome of the game and some of the concerning items.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined as always by James @CrimsonCast260 to preview Week 10 of B1G games on CrimsonCASH.

If you bang on the doors before Noon, we can let you in!
Indiana failed to put up a fight at home against Ohio State, losing by a huge margin and exhibiting very little positive aspects over the 60 minutes. Few people gave IU a shot going into the game, so the result isn't surprising. But the lack of effort and the continued inability of the offense to consistently do anything worthwhile is surprising, and we talk about that at length. At 2-5 on the season, the 2021 campaign is rapidly slipping into unrecoverable territory. Why have things spiraled so far out of control since December of last year? We talk about both the game and the broader issues on this episode of the podcast.
IU enters today at a low ebb for the season, coming off a disappointing loss at home to Michigan State and staring a dismal autumn in the face...with 5th-ranked Ohio State coming to town. We talk a bit about the game, answer some questions about where IU is at program-wise, and break down some of the issues with IU's offense.
Indiana's defense played a game worthy of a big victory against a Top 10 team. The rest of the team did not, and the Hoosiers dropped to 2-4 as a result. We tip our hats to the defense, and dive into the nuclear winter that is Indiana's offense, on this recap podcast for Homecoming 2021.

Sorry, a bit late due to some travels, but here is a quick Week 6 CrimsonCASH! Great to hear all the wrong picks with the games going on!

IU football is back in action, facing off against #4 Penn State on the road. The Hoosiers are 2-2 and haven't inspired a huge amount of confidence so far this season. Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined as always by James @CrimsonCast260 to preview Week 5 B1G games on CrimsonCASH.
Scott and Galen reconvene after a late night to talk about Indiana's narrow 33-31 victory over Western Kentucky. The Hoosiers started strong, struggled in the second half, but still managed to pick up the win and push their record to 2-2 on the season. We discuss the positive and negative takeaways from the game, and try to put the victory into the larger context of the season's arc.
A solo flight on the Western Kentucky preview --- and honestly most of this episode is more concerned with questions and comments relating to IU football's recently trajectory and what the team can do to pull itself out of the early season funk. The discussion starts off by chatting about the Punt John Punt article on the decline of IU's offensive potency (https://puntjohnpunt.com/2021/09/23/the-decline-of-the-indiana-offense/) before moving on to answering questions regarding playcalling, line play, accountability, and other aspects of the program and team right now. We finish with some evaluation of Western Kentucky's offensive approach and personnel, and what IU needs to be thinking about as they attempt to even their record at .500 on the season.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined as always by James @CrimsonCast260 to preview Week 3 B1G games on CrimsonCASH. James has some epic takes on Nebraska and balloons.
Indiana football had a golden opportunity to re-establish themselves as a contender this season against a highly ranked Cincinnati squad. Despite a strong start, the Hoosiers shot themselves in the foot repeatedly, committing multiple turnovers, coming away empty in red zone trips, allowing a return TD, and just generally messing up on the details that often mark the difference between victory and loss. We dissect the events of the game, discuss what led to Indiana's struggles and whether there are any obvious fixes, and also discuss the overall gameday atmosphere.
We're delighted to partner with Bloomington's own Switchyard Brewing Company to bring you this (taped) live pregame show, as we preview one of the biggest non-conference matchups Memorial Stadium has ever hosted. Inside the Hall's Grace Ybarra joins to chat a bit about the current state of IU basketball. And then the Indy Star's Matt Cohen joins to discuss the curious case of the disintegrating bleachers at Memorial Stadium. We also talk extensively about some of the storylines coming into this weekend's game, some key personnel to keep an eye on, and where IU's success will have to come from if they want to spring an upset on the 8th ranked Bearcats.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined as always by James @CrimsonCast260 to preview the Week 3 B1G games on CrimsonCASH. A new Money Line Parlay sure to go wrong.
After a week of recriminations and self-doubt, Indiana football needed a get-well game to feel better about themselves and demonstrate to an eager fan base that the season still has promise and potential. They mostly accomplished both goals in their 56-14 thrashing of Idaho, thanks to a dialed-in defense and a special teams performance that ranks as one of the best in program history. Did the win solve all of the questions around this team? No, and that will likely be the source of conversation and debate throughout the next week as the Hoosiers prepare for one of their biggest non-conference home games in recent memory. But several questions were answered, and that should allow the team and its fans to enjoy the week. We talk about our impressions from all three phases of play, discuss some of the implications from the game, and also discuss the game day atmosphere and overall vibe from the first restriction-free game on Indiana's campus in 22 months.
The description says "Idaho Preview" but in reality we're still talking a great deal about the result at Iowa and what that says about Indiana football's current status. Is it panic time? Did we learn anything from this week's press conferences? Should there be concern at the number of national pundits who are expecting IU to lose two of their next three games? We welcome Evan Gerike from the Indiana Daily Student for the first part of this episode, and we recap the Iowa loss while evaluating what went right and wrong. We field a couple of questions from the audience, then talk about Idaho's bizarre QB situation among other things.Scott then joins the podcast and we answer some more of your questions, including trying to ascertain what kind of an outcome would be positive for IU coming out of this weekend's matchup.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined as always by James @CrimsonCast260 to preview the Week 2 B1G games on CrimsonCASH. Lots of big lines, so learn how a Money Line Parlay might be the way to go. Also end with some great tailgate, generic food and hot plankton talk!
Well, that could have gone better. A boisterous group of IU fans voyaged to Iowa City this weekend to watch the ranked Indiana Hoosiers take on the Hawkeyes. Many fans and pundits have tipped this team for great things, yet on Saturday it was Iowa that looked like the actual contenders, while Indiana never even got things started. It was a very disappointing performance, and Tom Allen and company have a significant amount of work to do between now and next week. Scott and Galen discuss the gameday atmosphere, what went wrong for Indiana, what the biggest areas of concern appear to be, and what if anything this says about the rest of the season for IU.
With so many IU fans on the road to Iowa City this weekend, we decided to connect with an expert on the area. KWOC reporter Michael Tilka is a native of Iowa, but is an alumnus of Indiana University and covered the football team for multiple seasons during his time at IUSTV. Michael and Galen chat about the gameday atmosphere at Kinnick Stadium, the setup in Iowa City as far as eating and drinking are concerned, and some of the best places to consider going. We also talk about the matchup between IU and Iowa, and get some insights about what to expect from the Hawkeyes coming into this year.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined as always by James @CrimsonCast260 to review the rest of the Week 1 B1G games this weekend in this episode of CrimsonCASH.

We've gotten a lot of questions about tailgating at IU football games this year, thanks in no small part to the excitement surrounding this year's IU football team. So Galen and Scott sat down and talked for about 90 minutes about tailgating. Learn about what it was like playing against IU, what "The Ball is the Issue" means and how our turnover success from last year could carry-over into this year. What is IU doing to have success on the recruiting trail, and what IU has to do to move up in the upper tier of B1G teams, and what the key games for IU are this season. They also talk about realignment and what the B1G can do to position its-self for success. Finally they spend a few minutes talking about some issues happening at Michigan and if IU could take their spot in the top level of the Big Ten East.
We're joined by ESPN college football stats guru Bill Connelly to talk IU football! Bill is the originator of the SP+, an efficiency-based ratings system for college football. We discuss the 2020 Hoosiers in depth, and dive into why IU's SP+ numbers didn't match their poll rankings. We then look to the current season and evaluate how Indiana is projecting forward, why they have so many toss-up games, and what areas IU might improve upon. We also take a specific look at a couple of key early-season matchups and talk about what Hoosier fans might expect in those games.
College sports is changing, and we're here to talk about the details, the implications, and the new landscape. Andy Wittry (of Out of Bounds newsletter fame) joins the podcast to talk about the implications of the Texas / Oklahoma move to the SEC, the root cause of the instability in college athletics, and what (if anything) the Big Ten needs to do.
Scott and Galen are back together for a rare in-person podcast, and of course the topic is football. Scott wants in on the season expectations question, so we talk that out and consider what momentum and progression really means for IU football at this point in the Allen era. We then move to discussing this year's gameday experience, what changes might occur, and what the athletic department might want to do in order to ensure that the rush of new interest in football is matched with good experiences and memory-making.We also discuss which games are most important on the calendar, how injuries and player development might shape the upcoming season, and why traffic is not a reasonable excuse for not coming to a football game this fall.
Our old friend Dustin Dopirak of the Daily Hoosier joins us to talk IU football. We discuss the recent streak of good recruiting vibes that IU has been enjoying, and what in Dustin's eyes has been causing this. We also discuss the Big Ten schedule, the matchups IU is facing, and what we can potentially expect from the team's overall record. We finish up by answering some questions from the Twitterverse, including what positions might take a step forward (or backwards) and what to expect out of OC Nick Sheridan in year two.
On this all-football edition of CrimsonCast, Scott and Galen welcome back frequent former podcast guest Taylor Lehman, who is back as a part-time recruiting analyst with The Hoosier. We talk about the momentum that IU has built on the recruiting trail, discuss what it is that Tom Allen is doing to make inroads in the Indiana high school recruiting scene, and who the biggest impact players that IU will have joining them from the upcoming recruiting class. Then Grace Ybarra from Inside The Hall joins to talk about some IU basketball updates, and Griffin Gonzalez of The Hoosier Network checks in to discuss Tom Allen's recruiting pitch and the impact that a full Memorial Stadium might have on IU football.
A potentially landmark case for college athletics was ruled on by the Supreme Court on Monday, one that might have some far-reaching implications for the sport and for the concept of amateurism. Galen is joined by the Indy Star's Zach Osterman, who has written about issues relating to both the Alston vs NCAA case and NIL rights more generally, and the two of us discuss the nature of the case, the implications of the ruling, and what it means in the bigger scheme of things.
Scott went to the race; Galen had to watch it on TV. The guys spend an hour discussing one of their favorite sporting events of the year, what the crowds were like, how the renovations looked, how the race stacked up competitively, and what (if anything) it might mean for the future of the Indy 500.
Joining us on this special edition of CrimsonCast are two men who cover IU men's soccer closely - Evan Gerike of the Indiana Daily Student and Jared Kelly of The Hoosier Network and Peegs.com. I talk with both of them about the unusual season that IU has faced, the players that have made this team as good as it is, and what they'll be going up against when they match up against Seton Hall on Monday, as IU men's soccer attempts to book a repeat trip to the College Cup.
We apologize for the long delay between podcasts. Our way of apologizing is by nearly breaking the 100 minute barrier on this episode. Scott and Galen do a rare in-person show, and we spent the first half of the show talking about IU football's last month, discussing the victories on the recruiting trail, and answering your questions about the program's momentum. We then turn to men's soccer and give a preview of the Hoosiers' chances in the NCAA tournament, before finally pivoting to men's basketball and talking at length about a variety of subjects, including the impact of Dane Fife's arrival, Logan Duncomb's potential impact, the recruitment of Kopp and Bates, the culture shift going on in terms of IU recruiting targets, and more.

We discuss Dane Fife's hiring and introductory press conference, the departure of Joey Brunk, some of the individual player development opportunities and obstacles that this IU team faces, and whether Fife is actually a coach-in-waiting or not at this point.
Scott is finally back from vacation so we got a chance to podcast about the great past week that IU basketball and Mike Woodson experienced. We take a bunch of questions about how next year's roster looks, who might play where, who might end up filling the final assistant coaching slot, and how Woodson's hire and the subsequent couple of weeks of sunshine have changed the narrative about an "IU guy" at the helm.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined by Andy Bottoms @AndyBottoms from The Assembly Call to take a measured approach at the Mike Woodson hiring. Why we should be excited and why there are real concerns to think about.
News broke quickly on Sunday and now Mike Woodson is set to become IU's next men's basketball coach, with Thad Matta in an executive supporting role within the athletic department. We podcast our reactions in real-time and discuss the positives and negatives of this move.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined by Chris @IUArtifactsThey talk about how IU really has a tradition of changing traditions (before Coach Knight) and how the new coach should approach IU's traditions. And in case you haven't heard, IUBB is looking for a new Basketball Coach, so they talk about some candidates. Enjoy the interruptions by James (Scott's Son) and Chris's fire alarms (we all hope the pork chops were okay).
The co-hosts are back to talk IU coaching search news --- or the lack thereof. We talk about why the lack of news isn't as big of a deal as it might seem, why a well-managed coaching search is strangely problematic in the social media era, and why we really don't know much of anything after a week. We also take your questions about candidates, timing, and strategy.
We welcome Andy Wittry back to the podcast to talk about the weekend developments (or lack thereof) in the coaching search and evaluate some of the candidates in more depth. Zach reveals his misgivings about Stevens to IU, gives us his Homerun Hire Top Four, and even discusses the inactive candidates! Zach brings a key voice to the proceedings --- that of a huge college hoops fan who is not an Indiana fan --- and the breakdowns here may have you thinking differently about your order of preference for the hire.
On this episode, Dustin Dopirak of the Daily Hoosier joins us to discuss...well, you know. Dustin does a marvelous job breaking down where the Archie Miller era went wrong in granular detail, with a particular focus on recruiting issues and bad luck. We then talk about the current state of the IU job and fan base, how the national media gets it wrong, but also how the national media gets it right. We finish up with a look at some of the coaching candidates and get Dustin's opinion on some of the potential directions, including one candidate who he thinks is a non-starter.
It's been a crazy last few weeks on the IU basketball beat, with a seismic change rocking the program. We also field some questions from the Twitterverse, and give our thoughts on the rumor circus already starting to dominate the scene.
Our friend Chronic Hoosier rejoins us on CrimsonCast --- we talk about the firing of Archie Miller, where it went wrong over the last four years, what the current state of the program and the IU basketball brand is, and what direction Indiana needs to go with the new hire.
The Big News broke on Monday late morning that IU Athletics and Scott Dolson have fired Archie Miller. Scott and Galen convene an emergency podcast to talk about the announcement, put the Archie Miller Era into some kind of context, and take your social media messages.
IU men's basketball saw their season end at the hand of Rutgers last night, so we talk about what we saw in the game, how it was emblematic of the season as a whole, and what it meant as an epitath to the year.We then take listener questions. There were a lot of them, and they all focused on the elephant in the room. We discuss strategies that IU should take for the next few weeks, what might happen if there's a change, and what might happen if there isn't a change.
We're back to talk IU sports --- and there's a whole lot to talk about. We tackle Tom Allen's contract augmentation first, and spend a bunch of time discussing how positive of a development this is for the IU football program and the fans. Next, we chat a bit about the QB situation for IU in 2021 and whether a rotation approach make sense. We then switch gears to basketball, as we preview both the women's team and the men's team as they head to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Tournament(s). The women have a chance at cementing a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, while the men are faced with an advance or disappear scenario.
Galen and Scott are back to discuss a great end to the B1G campaign and look at IU's seed line options for the NCAA Tournament............wait, none of that is true. They talk about the sad state of the current IUBB program and try to keep focused on the steps ahead.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined by Tony Adragna @CoachAdragna. They discuss what is going wrong with IUBB. What can be fixed this season and beyond? What is the risk and/or benefit to moving on from Coach Miller this off-season, and finally answer a bunch of good Twitter questions. Follow @CoachAdragna and check out his website- IU Film Room - iufilmroom.com
A podcast that is solidly 80% about IU football! We talk about the Hoosiers and their fascinating offseason - the hiring of Charlton Warren and what that means, the return of Deland McCullough and what that says about both Tom Allen and the IU football culture, and the reveal of the "new" 2021 football schedule (which looks an awful lot like the "old" 2021 football schedule if we're being honest). There's a bit of basketball talk at the end, too.
We're back talking IU basketball, as the Hoosiers prepare to start a two-game stretch that will likely decide the fate of the 2021 season with need-to-win games at home against Minnesota and Michigan State. We discuss what's happened since we last podded, including the Iowa and Northwestern wins and the Ohio State loss. We touch on the "messages" being sent by Miller to some of his players and whether those will have their desired effect. We also touch upon some of the structural deficiencies of the team, including the real problem with the offensive approach and the surprisingly poor defense being played in conference. Finally, we discuss IU's tournament prospects, what two wins this week might mean, and what a tournament bid would do for the narrative of the Miller era at Indiana.
We're back by semi-popular demand, talking IU basketball, some IU football, and food. Indiana's basketball fortunes haven't gotten particularly better than we last talked, so we talk about the general malaise of the program, the most troublesome aspects of the current situation...and how despite all that, there's still a chance that this team makes the NCAA tournament. We also field questions from you folks about the coaching situation, the football program's offseason development, and a little-known pizza order that is taking Bloomington by storm.Sadly we didn't talk about the new football schedule (since it hadn't been released yet when we recorded), but we'll save that for a future episode!
IU men's basketball is in a bad place right now, coming off an extremely disappointing double-digit loss at home to Purdue. With the team now under .500 in the conference and barely above .500 for the season, some questions have to be asked about what's happening and why. We dive into the reasons for the Purdue loss, the problems that have stubbornly refused to go away this season, and the macro-level issues that the program is facing.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined by Tony Adragna @CoachAdragna to chat about his new IU Film Room website - iufilmroom.comThey also look at the issues this offense is having: getting in rhythm, getting good open looks for the guards and keeping aggression and confidence up. How is Lander’s lack of playing time going to affect future recruits, and they answer some Twitter questions.
Zach Osterman of the Indy Star joins the podcast to talk about Indiana football. We recap the Outback Bowl and what the the outcome meant, before pulling out the lens a bit and taking stock of the season for a whole. We also discuss the upcoming offseason for IU, the importance of the DC search, and the areas of improvement that Indiana needs to make as Tom Allen continues his project in Bloomington.
Scott and Galen chat IU hoops, and specifically the problems that Indiana seems to be facing in a problematic 2020-21 season so far. Is it a scheme issue? Is it effort? Is it some combination of the above? We discuss why the team has struggled to look compelling, and give a quick preview of tonight's home matchup vs Maryland.
We give our thoughts on a disappointing Outback Bowl performance and talk about why things went down the way they did, and what Indiana missed out on by losing the game. Several Twitter questions are fielded throughout as we hear from the audience on their feelings about the game, the season, and next year.
Galen is on site to preview the Outback Bowl with Scott, and what a win would mean for the IUFB Program.
Zach Osterman of the Indy Star is back, as we talk about IU Football's week after the bowl selection fiasco, the team's mental and physical state heading into next weekend, and get a preview of Ole Miss and a breakdown of how IU matches up.
We're joined by fan favorite and WCBI anchor/reporter Courtney Robb, an IU alum who covers SEC football in the state of Mississippi. She talks about her perspective on this year's Ole Miss team, and we discuss what IU might need to worry about as they head into their Outback Bowl matchup against the Rebels.
Scott and DoctorGC do a rare CrimsonCast Live to express our disgust at the cynical politics of college football and the Big Ten, as Indiana has a New Year's Six bowl stolen out from under them and ends up in the Outback Bowl.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined again James Turner @Hooosierdocious for CrimsonCash Week 9 - Crossover & Championship Week!
Scott and GC are back, talking about both IU football and IU basketball. On the football front, we discuss the unfortunate departure of Kane Wommack, the difficulty in building a sustainable program at a place like Indiana, and the sportspolitik of the Big Ten "crossover games" and the bowl situation. On the basketball side, we look at the first six games of the year and debate what we're seeing, as well as discussing some of the finer points of IU's defense this season.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined again James Turner @Hooosierdocious for CrimsonCash Week 8. They start off giving their thoughts on the screw job the B1G gave to IU in the B1G title game. They go way off the rails and you can hear stories about Scott pushing Galen into a Podcast, Scott's Changerace Blog (http://changerace.blogspot.com/) and James job at a in-grocery store bank.
On this relatively short podcast, we delve further into the autopsy of the Big Ten's decision to remove Indiana from the Big Ten title game. We talk about how the conference created the situation and then exacerbated it, and why the realities of the situation don't make it any more palatable for IU fans. We also discuss the CFP Committee's rankings, and what might be behind them.
The Big Ten decides to arbitrarily change its rules and remove IU from the Big Ten title game. The College Football Playoff committee decides to goofily misapply criteria to Indiana to keep them on the sidelines of a New Year's Six bowl. Chronic Hoosier joins to discuss 24 hours of theft and outrage.
Indiana plays a sublime game at Camp Randall Stadium and comes away with their first victory over Wisconsin since 2002. We talk in depth about the game, the performance by the defense, the coming out party for Jack Tuttle, and the buzz and energy surrounding the game. We then talk about the future prospects of this IU team for the rest of the season --- the looming Bucket Game matchup vs Purdue, the Big Ten Championship Game (or not), and where the Hoosiers may end up bowling. 90 minutes of fun with some swearing involved. Take a listen.
On a live Friday night podcast, GC breaks down what we saw from IU basketball in MauiAsheville, and tries to make sense of what IU basketball is this year. Then we move to football and spend a good 30 minutes talking about the various elements of Saturday's Indiana - Wisconsin tilt. In a weird season, this may be a weird game --- certainly one that's hard to figure out, given that Wisconsin has barely played this year and Indiana is starting essentially a rookie QB under center. But there are some interesting and encouraging aspects of this matchup for the Hoosiers, and there are reasons to believe Indiana may not play the same moribund game that they normally turn in when visiting Camp Randall.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined again James Turner @Hooosierdocious for CrimsonCash Week 7.
A big Sunday Show for you, as Scott and Galen react to Indiana's 27-11 win over Maryland. We talk about the slow start for the offense, the Penix injury, and the professional nature of the Hoosiers' victory. The defense deserves a tremendous amount of credit for their ability to take over games, and we give them their due in discussing the way the game played out.Lots of questions filtered in from social media, so we addressed many of those, including questions about a potential future with Jack Tuttle under center, the disposition of the running game, who the team MVP is so far, and what (if anything) to expect in terms of Big Ten title games or bowl berths. Finally, we spend the last 20 minutes discussing Indiana's basketball win over Tennessee Tech, and look ahead to their matchup vs Providence in "Maui" on Monday.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined again James Turner @Hooosierdocious for CrimsonCash Week 6. They live bet the Iowa game, and squeeze this podcast in around turkey and holiday decorations.
COVID continues to impact college sports across the board, and we bring on friend of the pod Andy Wittry from Crimson Quarry and the Out of Bounds Newsletter to talk about the impact on both college football and college basketball. We also discuss what to expect in the next few weeks, and how Indiana is approaching the football game vs Maryland. We also get a chance to welcome IDS men's basketball beat writer Grace Ybarra to the show for the first time. Grace gives us her eyewitness account of the scene at Assembly Hall this past Wednesday during Indiana's big win over Tennessee Tech. We talk about the impact of the freshmen and the overall look of the team after a longer-than-normal layoff, and discuss what awaits the Hoosiers as they travel to "Maui" for a tournament next week.
We think the basketball season is going to happen now, so let's talk about it! We tackle the projections that show IU on the fringes of the top 25, the media projections that show Indiana squarely in the middle of the pack, and then try to evaluate what to make out of all that. There's a lot of interesting questions surrounding this program right now --- recruiting, player development, in-conference comparisons to other programs, and the arrow of time. There's a glass-half-full picture of this program, but is it the lens that fans should be viewing the program through? And in the year of COVID 2020, can we draw any meaningful conclusions about the program's trajectory? We explore.
IU came close, but Ohio State was a bit better. Still, it's a pretty positive episode of CrimsonCast as we talk about the game and the things we took away from it. Indiana made some tremendous plays on both sides of the ball, overcoming their mistakes and demonstrating a resilience that fans can be excited about. What does it mean for the rest of the season? We talk about the remaining schedule, the prizes still out there for IU to grab, and the implications for beyond 2020.
Mike Miller rejoins us on the final part of a multiple podcast Friday. Lots of IU - Ohio State talk! Analysis! Statistics! Predictions!
The Indy Star's Zach Osterman joins us on this edition of CrimsonCast as we preview the upcoming Ohio State game. We talk about the important takeaways from the Michigan State game, including a conversation over the margin of victory and the style of victory by Indiana. We discuss the things worth keeping an eye on for the Ohio State game, including defensive line play, turnover potential, and whether or not Indiana really wants to run the ball. We also get an injury update on key personnel for IU.
We're joined on CrimsonCast by former Indiana football assistant coach Bob Morris, who coached at IU from 1983 to 1993 and was a part of the coaching staff for the last time Indiana won at Ohio State in 1987. Coach Morris takes us through the build-up to the game, talking about the component parts that made up those early Bill Mallory teams and what Mallory said in the stadium on the eve of the game. We also talk a bit about how the team was assembled, as well as how they compare to Tom Allen's present-day Hoosiers.
Our first of several Friday podcasts welcomes back Taylor Lehman to the pod --- the former IU and Ohio State reporter gives us some perspective on the two programs, and then we talk about the matchup between these two unbeaten teams. What are the keys for IU winning? Can they keep it close with Ohio State? Are the Buckeyes an invincible team this year? All that and more on this episode of CrimsonCast.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined again James Turner @Hooosierdocious for CrimsonCash Week 5. James finally learns to NEVER bet on Purdue, and they both have some crazy moneyline winner pics.
Scott @CrimsonCast317 is joined by Kevin @Kevinish, editor of Elevenwarriors.com to preview the Ohio State vs Indiana game this Saturday. They talk about what weaknesses Indiana could exploit on Saturday (Spoiler Alert – There aren’t really that many), and why Indiana should attack the Ohio State secondary. They also spend some time talking about the dumpster fire at Michigan, who Ohio State fans want to see as the new coach at Michigan, and if Indiana could move into the top tier of B1G East teams.
Scott and Galen recap a victorious and weirdly unsatisfying win over Michigan State. We talk about the oddity of expectations in this football season, and discuss the many positives that came out of Indiana's shutout victory at Spartan Stadium (a historic rarity!). The defense's continued evolution into a turnover-generating machine and the offense's reliance on momentum and field position each get discussed in kind.We then turn our attention to the Ohio State game on the horizon, as we talk about the historical importance of the game, the realistic chances of IU in the game, and the motivational elements that the Hoosiers might take advantage of as they head into what is likely to be a battle of top ten teams.

Scott and Galen relive the excitement of the victory, discussing the key moments in the contest and looking at the statistical dominance that IU was able to exert over a surprisingly pedestrian Wolverine squad. We read a bunch of Twitter comments and questions, with particular questions about Tom Allen's long-term future, the impact that current success might have on future IU football teams, and more. Scott and Galen recap Indiana's 37-21 victory over Rutgers. We talk about the positives from the game, as the defense had another fine performance and the offense found some rhythm in key moments in the second half that proved Indiana to be clearly better than the Scarlet Knights. We also dissect some of the more problematic aspects of the game, including the struggling IU running game, some questionable offensive line play, and continued worries about a lack of attention to detail. We also peek ahead to next week's game against Michigan, and discuss what that game will mean to both teams --- including the historical oddity of IU being ranked ahead of Michigan in a matchup.

Scott is joined by Aaron Breitman (@aaron_breitman) Managing Editor of On The Banks (www.onthebanks.com) to preview the upcoming game vs Rutgers this weekend. Learn why Rutgers might struggle with Penix’s play, but also learn why Rutgers is hopeful based on the previous games that IU has played at Rutgers. Finally learn a bit more about why Aaron is not a fan of the white helmet look for the Scarlet Knights.
It's a very happy episode of CrimsonCast, as we bask in the glory of IU's 36-35 OT victory over Penn State to start the season. We read some of your social media posts from after the game, and then have a long conversation about the win, the celebration, the broken door, and a lot more. Then Zach Osterman comes on and we get his perspective on the game.
After shamelessly cheating on each other during the week, Scott and Galen are back together in podcast form to answer listener mail and talk about the 2020 Indiana football season. We address the pressing questions of the upcoming year, including concerns about depth, playcalling, health, and confidence. We also give our evaluation of IU's chances in the season opener against Penn State.
IU Artifacts is back, joining us on the latest episode of CrimsonCast to talk IU football. We discuss the lead-in to the season and some of the historical comparisons that last season has to prior seasons where the Hoosiers exceeded expectations. We also discuss some of the more granular details of IU's roster as we get closer to the start of the Penn State game, and evaluate the sorts of things that Indiana needs to do in order to ensure a second straight successful season. We finish the conversation with an extended look at Caleb Coffman's great feature piece in the Indiana Daily Student about John Feinstein and the writing of the seminal Bob Knight (and IU basketball) book "A Season On The Brink". We discuss our reflections from having read both the book and the piece, and think about the implications of the book 35 years later on the image of Knight and the lessons that were learned.
Scott is joined by James Turner @Hooosierdocious for a new weekly segment - #CrimsonCash – Scott & James will look at the lines for all B1G games this weekend and see where they can find value. They will each lock in a bet for each game, and keep track of their bets during the season, to see who can pick more winning bets. Each week they will also take their bets and put them into a parlay with their own money. This week learn why they both like Ohio State -26, learn who has the guts to take the Indiana money line, both agree Michigan might not be good but disagree on how to bet on it, and finally learn the best way to bet the garbage Maryland/Northwestern game.
Our friend Chronic Hoosier returns as a guest on CrimsonCast, which gives us a chance to talk about IU Football at length. We talk about the long-term aspects of being an IU football supporter and how the inherent cynicism of the fanbase is something that may warrant being put away for this season. We also discuss the way the program has come together under Tom Allen and what that might portend for a season in which the normal order of college football has been uprooted. We also talk a bit about this weekend's game vs Penn State, and ponder what the Hoosiers need to do in order to come away with a victory against the Nittany Lions.
Mike Miller of Crimson Quarry rejoins us on the podcast as we get ready for a big week of IU football talk. We start off by talking about our favorite Homefield Apparel shirts that we haven't bought yet, then we talk about college football at large and the problematic nature of the season so far in the COVID autumn. At about the 12:30 mark, we switch completely to IU football, and discuss several of the items that are on our minds heading into the first game of the season. We discuss the Nick Sheridan question, and weigh the pros and cons of a first-year offensive coordinator in the sea of sharks known as the Big Ten East. We talk about some of the key areas of the team, including the depth of the defense, the one position group that might be problematic, and the promise of the skill positions. We also chat about Tom Allen, IU football, and the audacity of hope, and why last year's results may (or may not) point to a breakout year for the team emotionally and mentally. We wrap things up with some specific talk about the IU-Penn State game, and give our early predictions.
The Big Ten released its 2020 football schedule, so we did what we always do and tried to anticipate Indiana's final record. Mike Miller of Crimson Quarry joins us on a rare live video chat to talk about the positives and negatives of the IU schedule, and we each give our prediction on how the season will play out.
After about six weeks of broad discontent, the Big Ten abruptly reversed course earlier this week, announcing that there will indeed be a football season after all, starting on October 24th and limited to 9 conference-only games. Scott and Galen get together to talk about this sudden turn of events, as we discuss the items that led to the relaunching of the season, how we feel about the reappearance of football during the time of COVID, and what we think about IU's upcoming season. We also answer a bevy of listener questions.
This wasn't how we had envisioned coming back --- with Indiana's fall football season cancelled and a huge amount of uncertainty surrounding college sports. But here we are. We delve into the decision to postpone 2020 football, and talk about why college sports is in the position it currently is in. We also discuss the baffling lack of planning across college athletics, and ponder what a spring season might look like.
CrimsonCast emerges from summer hibernation to chat about the events of the last month in IU athletics. We tackle the men's basketball roster changes, including the departure of Justin Smith and his legacy as an Indiana Hoosiers basketball player, the reclassification of Khristian Lander to the incoming freshman class, and the re-evaluation of the squad and how it will look for a prospective 2020-21 season. We also field several questions from the Twitterverse about the upcoming football season, the implications of the graduate transfers, and the gameday experience at Memorial Stadium. Finally, we discuss the potential implications of COVID-19 on the football and basketball seasons, and the broader implications on universities across the United States.
It's crossover week! Assembly Call and CrimsonCast have traded places, and Andy Bottoms and Coach Brian Tonsoni take over hosting duties this week. Here's what's up in this all-football episode of CrimsonCast:We opened the episode by discussing how we became fans of the IU football program, and in both cases the seeds were planted during the Mallory era. We discussed a few favorite games, moments, and players that shaped our fondness for the program before moving into a discussion on the upcoming season. To start, we recapped changes to the coaching staff and how a couple of them may be exaggerated by the delay in the start of the season. We also touched on how we feel Tom Allen has evolved as a coach, the health of Michael Penix, and our excitement over the depth of this year's team. We then took a quick run through the schedule and allowed our optimism to suggest the team could be bowl eligible before the schedule really ratchets up.We closed with some tailgating discussion, which was loosely sponsored by visitbloomington.com.
The Bloomington Food Revue is back! We get the committee together on a rainy Sunday to talk about more aspects of the Bloomington food scene. We start off with a lengthy conversation about the best places (and dishes) that are no long with us in Bloomington. As one might predict, there's plenty of talk of Macri's and Grisanti's, but also some mentions of quirky favorites like Garcia's and Great Wall. We then finish up with a discussion of the fine dining scene in Bloomington and why it has struggled to have much depth over the years. Is it simply a matter of population and the slow summers? What are the other factors? The Bloomington Food Revue is an ongoing podcast series brought to you by the folks from CrimsonCast, where we attempt to touch on the cool and interesting parts of Bloomington food and beverage. If you've got questions or comments, you can reach us on Twitter at @crimsoncast
On this special edition of CrimsonCast, GC is joined by The Hoosier Network's Connor Hines and Griffin Gonzalez and CrimsonCast contributor Chris Williams to discuss the legendary movie Breaking Away. As we lament the first lost Little 500 weekend in the race's history, we honor the present by looking back on the movie's core messages and characters, the inherent history of Indiana University and Bloomington embedded in the film, and hit on some fun trivia and random facts about what happens throughout.
We're back with another edition of CrimsonCast --- and we start the episode off with an important announcement about the future of the podcast. This time we're tackling some of your hypothetical questions about IU football. We try to answer the big question relating to IU football, which in a nutshell is "Why did Indiana choose basketball when so many other universities chose football?" So we delve a bit into the backstory of both sports in Indiana and how things led to the present day.We also answer a question regarding what the inflection point was in the post-Mallory era that led to the downturn in IU football's fortunes, and why it took so long for IU football to recover to its Mallory-era successes.
Part 2 of the Food Revue! We welcome back Chronic, Mark, Glass, Jason and Chris as we delve into a subject near and dear to our hearts, which is breakfast in B-town. We recount some of our favorite old breakfast spots, many of which are no longer active on the Bloomington scene unfortunately. We reminisce about pieces of Bloomington history like Ladyman's, Wee Willie's, and the Waffle House at 10th and College. We also chat about the lack of breakfast spots on the east side, the mid-2000s brunch renaissance, and the places that have survived and thrived during the past 20 years.
CrimsonCast presents The Bloomington Food Revue, a podcast series that focuses on the restaurant, bar, and food scene in B-town, past and present. On this special edition of CrimsonCast, Scott and Galen dust off the podcast machinery and answer some audience questions regarding various hypothetical, theoretical, and/or historical questions about Indiana basketball. For this episode, we field some questions related to:- Whether the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee screwed IU in 2012 and/or 2016- If Indiana would have won the 1992 title had the officiating been more equitable- What would have happened if IU won a basketball title in 1992 or 1993If you've got questions or thoughts of a historical/theoretical nature, hit us up on Twitter @CrimsonCast.-

College GameDay coming to Bloomington still seems like some sort of weird IU fanfic instead of a real thing, but it's happening, and we're pretty excited about it. We talk about what it means for the football program, how the teams might react, and what we can expect as far as ESPN's stage setup is concerned.
On this emergency edition of CrimsonCast Live, we delve into the sudden recruiting successes of the last 24 hours, and discuss how the perspective around IU basketball has changed so rapidly. We also talk about what to expect moving forward with IU recruiting, and what we might expect from Archie Miller and company when it comes to future targets. We also delve into IU football a bit, and talk about the lead-in to the 2017 season.
Scott reaches out across the aisle and is joined by Travis from Hammer and Rails to discuss how the Purdue community viewed the Tom Crean era, his firing and their views on Archie Miller.  Learn why much of the Purdue fanbase was eager to see us hire Steve Alford.  They also talk about the Matt Painter era at Purdue, where Purdue is going from here and a long range view of the B1G over the next 5-10 years.
Galen and Scott host a giddy CrimsonCast as we break down the Archie Miller hire, evaluate the now-completed IU basketball coaching search, and answer a cavalcade of listener questions. This podcast is obscenely long and we don't care. Hope you enjoy it.
We're joined by Bloomington Herald-Times beat writer Mike Miller, as we talk about the Crean era at IU. Mike talks about his experiences on the beat covering Crean, the disconnect between the coach's plan and the execution of that plan, and what lasting impact Crean had on the program. We also get into the coaching search, talk about some candidates, and discuss what a new coach could do to bridge the gap between the basketball program and the fan base.
The Tom Crean era went for nine years at Indiana, and Dustin Dopirak was the Bloomington Herald-Times beat writer during the heart of that era. He joins us on this episode of CrimsonCast to talk about his perspective on covering Crean at IU, the struggles the program had under Crean with putting the finishing touches on a return to national prominence, and the direction that IU and Fred Glass might chart moving forward. We also talk about potential coaching candidates, including an in-depth conversation on the profiles of Steve Alford and Tony Bennett.
CrimsonCast and Hoosier Chronicles unite! Galen and Chronic Hoosier sit down for a wide-ranging conversation about IU basketball, deep-diving into the Crean era, the national position of IU basketball, Indiana fandom, and what direction IU will (or should) go for a new coach.
When the IU coaching job is open, we have to talk about it with the people who know it. Our guest on this podcast is Alex McCarthy, former writer for 24/7 and Inside Indiana, as he gives his thoughts on Tom Crean, the Tom Crean era, and what's next for Indiana basketball.
Galen is joined by Sam Beishuizen of TheHoosier.com to talk about his reaction to the firing of Tom Crean. Sam gives us his post-mortem on the Crean era, and we discuss what might have gone wrong to lead to the firing this week. We also talk about the coaching search for Indiana, what we think the IU athletic department is looking for, and when we might hear word about the new coach.
