Mo News - The Interview
Mo News - The Interview

Interviews and deep-dives into the biggest and most interesting headlines with some of the smartest people in the world. From authors to political leaders to business leaders to parenting experts, Mosheh and Jill get answers to the questions you are asking and take you behind the headlines in episodes for context and analysis.

Why do so many people feel lonely, burned out, and disconnected—even in a hyper-connected world? Author and journalist Jennifer Wallace joins Mosheh to unpack what she sees as a root cause behind today’s mental health, workplace, and social crises: a growing lack of mattering. In her new book, 'Mattering: The Secret to a Life of Deep Connection and Purpose,' Wallace argues that feeling valued for who we are, and knowing we add value to others, is a fundamental human need. She explains how technology, distraction, and achievement-driven culture have hollowed out relationships, contributing to loneliness, burnout, disengagement at work, and rising social anger. The conversation discusses tips for reversing that trend, and also explores parenting and leadership, including why kids and adults thrive when they feel they matter at home and at work, and how small, everyday moments of attention and appreciation can rebuild connection.  Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. He has 20 years of experience at networks including Fox News, Bloomberg Television and CBS News, where he was the executive producer of the CBS Evening News and launched the network's 24 hour news channel. He founded the @mosheh Instagram news account in 2020 and the Mo News podcast and newsletter in 2022.
As he considers a 2028 presidential run, Rahm Emanuel joined us in studio for a wide-ranging and candid conversation about power, politics, and the moment the U.S. finds itself in right now. Emanuel has served at the highest levels of government — in Congress, as President Obama’s first chief of staff, two terms as mayor of Chicago, and most recently as U.S. ambassador to Japan. We dig into the rapidly shifting global order, including Greenland, U.S. alliances, China, Ukraine, Gaza, Israel Iran, and Venezuela. On President Trump’s second term, Emanuel acknowledges that he shares some underlying goals — including the need to confront China, fight for the American worker and reassess broken global institutions — but is sharply critical of Trump’s tactics, execution, and what he sees as lasting damage to America’s image, alliances, and long-term leverage abroad.Emanuel is blunt in his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s conduct of the Gaza war, while also defending Israel’s right to exist and protect itself. He warns that political realities around Israel have fundamentally changed inside the Democratic Party. We talk about what that mean if he decides to run for the Democratic nomination. The conversation also turns personal: growing up in Chicago, parenting, and life as one of the three Emanuel brothers — alongside Ari Emanuel, the legendary Hollywood agent, and Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a leading physician. A 37-year-old U.S. citizen, Alex Pretti was shot and killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis on Saturday. Federal officials say the shooting was self-defense, claiming Pretti approached agents with a gun. But multiple videos and eyewitness accounts do not back up the Trump administration claims, showing that Pretti was instead holding his phone and suggesting his weapon was actually removed by agents before they shot and killed him. This is the second fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by federal agents in Minneapolis in less than a month. The latest incident has sparked mass protests, lawsuits, and political backlash.Mosheh was joined by Elie Honig, former state and federal prosecutor and CNN senior legal analyst, for an Instagram Live on Sunday to break down the latest and answer your legal questions. We are making the conversation available as a podcast as well. We discuss: The legal standard federal agents must meet before using deadly force and how video evidence is evaluated How DOJ typically investigates federal shootings and how the Trump Administration is changing precedent Whether legally carrying a firearm changes the use-of-force analysis Citizens’ rights to film federal agents, protest, and observe enforcement actions Qualified immunity and whether federal agents have broader protections than local police State-level investigations of federal agents and what legal options remain for families if DOJ declines to act Broader questions about accountability and systemic use of force in federal immigration operations Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. As protests spread across Iran and the regime intensifies its crackdown, Mosh sits down with Jason Rezaian — former Tehran correspondent and Iranian regime prisoner— to break down what’s really happening inside the country, and why this moment feels different from past waves of unrest.Rezaian draws on both history and lived experience. His father left Iran for the U.S. before the revolution; Jason returned decades later to cover the country — and was ultimately arrested and held as prisoner for 544 days.In this conversation, Rezaian explains how Islamic Regime has reached its end date — from economic collapse and internal fractures to a public that increasingly feels it has nothing left to lose. He shares how Iranians still find ways to communicate and organize under extreme censorship, why outside military pressure often strengthens hardliners, and what real support for Iranian civil society could look like. The episode also looks ahead: how fragile the regime actually is, who could emerge as a credible leader if it falls, and what kind of transition would give Iran its best chance at stability after decades of repression. Rent is one of the biggest expenses for Americans — and for decades it’s been one of the least rewarding. In this episode, Mosheh sits down with Ankur Jain, CEO of BILT, to break down how his company is trying to flip that equation — and reveals new details about BILT’s newest credit cards launching next month. Jain explains how BILT has evolved from a simple idea — earning points on rent — into a platform now used in one in four U.S. apartment buildings, connecting rent payments to credit building, neighborhood rewards, and even future homeownership. He walks through how BILT partners with landlords, banks, and local businesses — and what’s changing with its upcoming credit cards designed to make everyday spending, from housing to healthcare, work harder for consumers. The conversation widens to rising housing costs and how AI and other technologies could reshape the economics of cities. Beyond that, Jain shares his lessons from scaling BILT with a lean team, avoiding early VC pressure, and what founders often get wrong when trying to grow companies. Mosheh and Ankur also get personal about growing up with immigrant parents. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. It's officially the most wonderful time of the year— or is it?  During the holidays, many of us are anything but cheerful. From Thanksgiving to Diwali, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza and New Year's, it‘s enough to make anyone feel frantic and frazzled.  In this episode, Jill sits down with Niro Feliciano, cognitive psychotherapist and author of the new book ‘All is Calmish– How to Feel Less Frantic and More Festive During the Holidays,' about the best ways to handle stress and feel joy during the holiday season. Niro has tips for dealing with grief, savoring key moments, knowing when to say "no," and even how to help kids (and adults) handle the influx of comparisons caused by social media and diverse holiday traditions. You can subscribe to Niro's newsletter, Three Good Things , for more on gratitude, relationships, and wellness. Jill Wagner (@jillrwagner) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. She's the Managing Editor of Mo News. Jill previously worked as a correspondent for CBS News, Cheddar News, and News 12. Yale psychologist Marc Brackett, bestselling author of Permission to Feel, joins Mosh to break down his new book Dealing With Feeling — a practical guide to emotional regulation at a moment when society seems more reactive, overwhelmed, and dis-regulated than ever. Brackett, who founded the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, explains what emotional regulation really is (and isn’t). It’s not suppressing emotions or “checking them at the door,” he says — it’s learning to use your feelings wisely to achieve your goals. The episode dives into: Why most adults were never taught emotional regulation and how beliefs from childhood still shape our reactions. The crucial difference between emotions — anger vs. disappointment, anxiety vs. stress — and why naming them accurately changes everything. Co-regulation: how to support your partner, friend, colleague, or child through difficult feelings without fixing or lecturing. Why venting often backfires, and how to help someone break the cycle of rumination. The role of sleep, exercise, food, and technology in stabilizing your emotional life — and why doom-scrolling is one of the worst “strategies.” Setting boundaries, managing family conflict, and navigating political tension without losing yourself. Why savoring positive emotions is as important as managing the negative ones — and how kids learn this faster than adults. Brackett also shares how his own childhood — bullying, loss, trauma — shaped his work, and how one emotionally intelligent uncle changed the trajectory of his life. He also discusses his work with kids, including RULER, the emotional intelligence curriculum now used in thousands of schools, and why he believes emotional skills should be taught from birth through adulthood.
Actor, activist, and “Being Jewish” podcast host Jonah Platt joins Mosheh for a wide-ranging conversation about Jewish identity, politics, culture, and the intense pressures facing American Jews after October 7th. Platt reflects on the fear, confusion, and polarization running through the community, and why so much of today’s antisemitism shows up not through slurs or symbols, but through omissions, framing, and coded language around Israel. He argues that this moment requires clarity, context, and calm engagement — not panic and not denial. The episode also explores the creation of Platt’s podcast 'Being Jewish,' which aims to expand how people understand Jewishness — as a people, culture, history, and set of values, not just a religion. Platt takes listeners inside Hollywood, an industry where many Jews have had to historically hide their identity. He also talks about the impact of October 7, and why some are now pushing forward Jewish and Israeli stories despite fear of backlash. Also in the interview: Breaking down where Jewish institutions have fallen short in educating younger generations about Israel, and how better storytelling could counter both misinformation and apathy. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Fox News Chief Foreign Correspondent Trey Yingst joined Mosh after returning from Israel to break down the fragile ceasefire, the behind the scenes of war reporting, how he deals with the trauma of what he reports on, and the split-second decision that saved his life on October 7, 2023. Yingst’s guiding philosophy after a decade in conflict zones: humanize civilians, avoid sweeping conclusions, and stay relentlessly accurate — even when everyone online demands you pick a side. Yingst explains what’s happening between Israel and Hamas right now, and details the effective media blackout in Gaza, and how he verifies information through contacts inside the enclave. Yingst walks through how he looks to get the story right, the pressures of real-time reporting, and the importance of old-school verification. He revisits October 7th, including his book, 'Black Saturday,' about the attack and the aftermath, and he reflects on what both Israelis and Palestinians are actually experiencing on the ground and why most people in the region aren’t consumed by war despite global perceptions. The conversation also covers: What remains of Hamas and whether Arab states can shape a post-war Gaza Why the world fixates on Israel-Palestine His reporting during the chaotic Kabul evacuation How he deals with the trauma of what he covers Trump’s nontraditional diplomacy and Jared Kushner’s growing role Where Ukraine-Russia peace talks stand and whether Putin has any incentive to stop fighting Rising global antisemitism and how it’s viewed inside Israel The role of social media in modern war reporting Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. When antisemitism surged after the October 7th attacks — and even years before — two Jewish journalists Bianna Golodryga (CNN) and Yonit Levi (Israel’s Channel 12) found themselves searching for something that didn’t exist: a way to help their kids make sense of the hate suddenly appearing in their feeds, schools, and daily lives. So they wrote the book themselves. In this episode, Mosh talks with Bianna and Yonit about their new novel, 'Don’t Feed the Lion,' which follows a 13-year-old boy confronting antisemitism in the age of social media — and why this age group desperately needs tools adults have long overlooked. The conversation goes far beyond the book. As veteran anchors covering two continents, they unpack the global rise in antisemitic incidents, political fractures inside Israel, the shifting dynamics between the U.S., Israel, Netanyahu, and Trump, and how major news outlets — including their own — have struggled to cover antisemitism before and after October 7th. Few filmmakers have shaped how we understand America quite like Ken Burns. In this episode, Ken joins Mosheh for an in-depth conversation about his newest project — The American Revolution, a sweeping six-part documentary premiering this month on PBS. The series reexamines America’s founding as more than a story of brilliant thinkers in Philadelphia — revealing a violent, fragile, and deeply human struggle for independence that almost failed. Burns explains how remarkable the American Revolution’s promise of “inalienable rights” was, and how the US influenced 200+ years of revolutions around the world. Burns explains why he thinks 1776 was the most consequential event since the birth of Jesus Christ. Burns also discusses the present: What the Founders’ era can teach us about disinformation, division, and democracy in 2025. Why complexity — not simplicity — is the key to understanding our past and navigating our future. And how Burns finds optimism and faith in a nation that’s always been a work in progress. The American Revolution premieres Sunday, November 16, on PBS and streams at PBS.org and the PBS App. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. What does the office look like now — and who actually wants to be there? In this episode, Industrious co-founder Jamie Hodari joins Mosh to discuss how the role of the workplace has changed in the face of the pandemic, hybrid work, and a new generation of employees. Jamie describes his vision for neighborhood workplaces, why “productivity” is a bad argument for return-to-office mandates, and how data-driven design details, like lighting and layout, can create spaces that people actually enjoy working in. It’s also a conversation about entrepreneurship: Jamie reflects on his journey from founding Industrious to now overseeing a major division at CBRE, competing with WeWork in the coworking space, and maintaining a strong friendship with his co-founder through it all. We’re living in a post-truth reality — where facts compete with memes, misinformation spreads faster than journalism, and artificial intelligence threatens to rewrite the rules entirely. Mosheh sits down with Nick Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, to break down the urgent fight over what’s real, what’s fake, and who gets to decide. Nick explains why AI search could soon become the primary way people consume information — and why The Atlantic moved early to strike a precedent-setting deal with OpenAI to protect its reporting from being scraped without credit or compensation. They dig into collapsing trust in media, the dangers of deepfakes, and how ethical journalism can survive when powerful players — from Beijing to Washington — try to shape the narrative. Nick also chats about navigating covering the Trump administration, including how 'The Atlantic' broke “Signalgate." Plus: Nick opens up about his new book The Running Ground, the story behind his ultramarathon obsession, and how endurance fuels leadership in the newsroom. His new presidential biography, To Rescue the American Spirit: Teddy Roosevelt and the Birth of a Superpower, explores how Roosevelt reshaped the presidency—and what his legacy reveals about leadership today. Baier discuses the striking parallels between Roosevelt and Donald Trump, from their battles with the press to their populist instincts and expansive use of executive power. Baier also shares insights from covering Trump up close—from flights aboard Air Force One to the current fights inside Washington over immigration raids, foreign policy, and new media restrictions at the Pentagon. They explore whether Roosevelt’s “speak softly and carry a big stick” approach could survive in 2025—and what advice Teddy might offer Trump as he defines his second term. As the current government shutdown enters a second month, Senator Mark Kelly joins Mosh to explain what the standoff means for millions of Americans — as funding for SNAP benefits and childcare programs is about to run out. The Arizona Democrat lays out what Democrats are demanding before agreeing to a GOP bill to reopen the government, and why he believes President Trump alone can unlock a deal. The conversation also dives into major global events  — from Trump’s new trade deal with China to U.S. tensions in Venezuela and a potential return to nuclear weapons testing. Drawing on his military experience, Kelly weighs the risks of the escalation in Latin America and Trump's response to China and Russia. 🐝 This podcast was recorded from the Mo News office at Industrious at Midtown on 50th St. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Dante Disparte, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global Policy at Circle, joins us to discuss how stablecoins differ from volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, why Circle calls them “WhatsApp for dollars,” and how they could change the way small businesses and families send and receive money across borders. Parenting doesn’t magically get “easier” once kids are past the toddler years—and Alyssa Blask Campbell wants us to stop pretending it does. The bestselling author of Tiny Humans, Big Emotions is back with her new book Big Kids, Bigger Feelings, a guide to navigating the rollercoaster of the elementary school years—when kids are “too old for tantrums, but too young for teen drama.” Alyssa joins Mosheh to break down why these years matter so much for building resilience, empathy, and emotional intelligence. She explains how parents can act as “emotional detectives” to uncover what’s really driving behavior, the difference between respect and obedience, and why our own self-regulation as adults is the model our children will copy. We also dig into practical, everyday dilemmas: how to handle screen time and peer pressure, what to do when your child lies, and how to respond to difficult emotions like sadness and anger. Plus—the often-overlooked role of diet, sleep, and nervous system regulation in shaping behavior.Alyssa also shares insights from her Collaborative Emotion Processing (CEP) method, and why teaching kids to manage their feelings is the single greatest gift parents can give. 🐝 This podcast was recorded from the Mo News office at Industrious at Midtown on 50th St. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. In this episode, Mosh travels to Elkhart, Indiana, to tour Amazon’s first-of-its-kind delivery center built  from mass timber — part of the company’s push to reach net zero carbon by 2040. He sits down with Daniel Mallory, Amazon’s vice president of global realty, to explore how one of the world’s largest companies is rethinking construction, packaging, and delivery in the name of sustainability.Mallory discusses how small customer choices, like combining shipments, can make a massive environmental impact. He also explains how mass timber stacks up against steel and concrete, why Amazon sees sustainability and customer service as inseparable, and how the facility serves as an experiment for testing which of its 40-plus eco-friendly strategies — from low-carbon asphalt and rainwater reuse to electric vans on the road--could scale across Amazon and across the world. The former head of the Israeli Mossad spy agency, Yossi Cohen, joins Mo News for a rare, candid interview about Israel’s security challenges and the region’s shifting landscape. Cohen led the agency from 2016 to 2021, overseeing the theft of Iran’s nuclear archive, covert operations that damaged Tehran’s missile and nuclear programs, and back-channel negotiations that paved the way for the Abraham Accords. He is the author of a new book, The Sword of Freedom, discussing his career and the state of the region. Now out of government and weighing political ambitions, he reflects on his tenure and the lessons of the past two years. We discuss: The state of Israel’s fight with Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran after the 12-Day War — and how much damage was done to Iran’s military and psychological capacity. The October 7 intelligence failure and why Israel missed warnings about Hamas. The damage to Israel’s reputation, with rising anti-Israel sentiment, accusations of war crimes and surging antisemitism worldwide. Behind-the-scenes negotiations with Arab leaders, Saudi Arabia’s potential as Israel’s most influential partner, and the future of a Palestinian state. Few institutions are as secretive, controversial, and consequential as the CIA. From covert Cold War operations to the war on terror, America’s spy agency has been both praised for keeping the country safe and condemned for its failures and abuses. Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and historian Tim Weiner joins us to unpack that complicated history and discuss his new book, The Mission, which traces how the CIA has struggled to adapt espionage in the 21st century. Weiner is also the author of the National Book Award–winning Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA, Enemies: A History of the FBI.  In this conversation, we explore the agency’s origins, its Cold War and post-9/11 record, and the lessons of Iraq, torture, and Afghanistan. We discuss the biggest threats facing the U.S. today—including China’s massive intelligence apparatus, estimated to be 20 times the size of the CIA, and how Beijing’s ambitions differ from Russia’s. We discuss whether intelligence leaders believe the biggest threat to US national security is internal or external. And, Weiner breaks down the concerns over President Trump’s approach to the agency—and what happens when intelligence is shaped, or warped, by politics.  🐝 This podcast was recorded from the Mo News office at Industrious at Midtown on 50th St. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Few institutions impact our daily lives more than the Federal Reserve—and rarely has it been under so much scrutiny. With interest rates, inflation, and political pressure dominating headlines, the Fed’s decisions shape everything from mortgages to credit card bills. As water shortages intensify across the globe, one company is betting on a controversial solution: making it rain—literally. In this episode, we’re joined by Augustus Doricko, founder and CEO of Rainmaker, to break down the science, promise, and misconceptions around cloud seeding. We explore how this decades-old technology has advanced, what it could mean for agriculture and the environment, and why it’s drawing renewed interest. Doricko walks us through how cloud seeding actually works, the regulatory safeguards in place, and how it differs from more speculative geoengineering efforts. He also weighs in on the ethics of weather modification and why water access is becoming a national security issue.  He also fact checks various theories when it comes to ways the weather CANNOT be altered.  Note: Our conversation took place before the recent record flooding in central Texas. In the aftermath of the worst mass shooting in NYC in 25 years, we speak with NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo as new details emerge about the attack and the suspect. The former NY governor discusses the state of gun violence, what he thinks needs to be done about assault weapons at the federal level, and how ‘Mayor Cuomo’ would handle public safety and the NYPD differently. We dig into the NYC mayoral race, his loss to Zohran Mamdani in the primary, what he learned, and why he’s staying in the race as an independent. He weighs in on Mamdani’s proposals, why he thinks Mayor Eric Adams should drop out, the rise of “democratic socialism,” President Trump, the migrant crisis, antisemitism and what’s at stake for New York City in November. We also revisit his record as governor, including the landmark NY SAFE Act counteracting gun violence, and his economic and infrastructure initiatives as he tells us why he thinks it's inaccurate to say ‘blue states’ can’t get things done. He also addresses Mo News community questions about his controversies, including about his COVID policies, and the sexual misconduct allegations that led to his resignation from governor. 🐝 This podcast was recorded from the Mo News office at Industrious at Midtown on 50th St. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is currently trailing in polls ahead of the November mayoral race — but he tells Mo News that the race has only just started.  In an interview with Mosheh, Adams said he’s focused on spreading his message about his record and administration’s wins — including on the economy and public safety — and registering 1 million new voters. Mosheh asks Adams how he plans to overcome his dismal favorability ratings with New Yorkers, while also pressing him on his five-count criminal indictment. It made him the first New York City mayor to be indicted, but was dropped by the Trump Justice Department in February. They discuss his relationship with Trump and what actually went down earlier this year.  Adams also addresses a number of the promises made by Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani — the 33 year-old Democratic Socialist who ran on promises of free childcare, free buses, rent freezes, and a sweeping social justice and tax agenda.  Adams has some blunt words in this interview for former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary but is still considering an independent run. A Mamdani victory is all but guaranteed if both Adams and Cuomo remain in and split the centrist vote.  Adams also discussed his origin story — including how getting beaten up by a police officer as a teen led him to join the NYPD— and played a round of rapid-fire questions on what he loves most about New York. Sky-high insurance premiums. Surprise medical bills. Drug prices that keep going up. Why does healthcare in America cost so much — and how did we end up here? Dr. Cedric Jamie Rutland, a critical care physician and BuzzRx Medical Advisor, joins Mosheh for a wide-ranging conversation that breaks down the real reasons healthcare is so expensive in the U.S. They explore how pharmacy benefit managers quietly shape what you pay, the unintended consequences of the Affordable Care Act, and why insurance coverage often feels arbitrary. With Republicans in power across all branches of the federal government, Democrats are looking for ways to regain trust and learn how to build things. One book they’re looking toward is Marc Dunkelman’s: Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress―and How to Bring It Back.  In this episode, Marc joins Mosheh to discuss how the Democratic distrust of power since the 1960s has led to stagnation and public distrust, paving the way for Donald Trump’s election as someone who promises to make things actually happen. He explains how we got from the era of Robert Moses reshaping New York and FDR’s New Deal, to a modern day with infrastructure in disrepair nationwide. Plus, some broader historical context: how the dueling mindsets at the heart of progressivism—a need for strong executive action and a mistrust of power— reflects a broader American conflict that goes all the way back to the days of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Mark Carney has pulled off a remarkable political comeback to become the next Prime Minister of Canada, keeping his Liberal Party in power after trailing significantly just months ago.  The win comes as Canada faces growing tension with the U.S., as President Trump has ignited a trade war, and repeatedly spoken about making Canada America’s “51st state.” In this special post-election edition, we’re joined by Amanda Alvaro and Rachael Segal, co-hosts of the Canadian podcast Beyond a Ballot, to unpack how Carney pulled it off, how Trump’s attacks helped Liberals and hurt Conservatives, and what this all means for U.S.-Canada relations moving forward.  From voter backlash to economic anxieties and national identity, we break down the forces reshaping Canadian politics at a critical moment. In this episode, Mosh sits down with Chris Whipple, author of the new book Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History for a behind-the-scenes look at the tight-lipped four years of the Biden Administration. Whipple interviewed several former White House staffers–including Biden’s former Chief of Staff, Ron Klain–about Biden’s decline before and during his presidency, and what he calls a “fog of delusion and denial” in the President’s inner circle leading into the 2024 campaign.  He takes us inside Camp David for the prep before his disastrous June 27 debate, and the chaos in the Democratic party during the three weeks after the debate until Biden’s decision to drop out. It’s also a story of personalities in Washington: the complicated relationship between Biden and Barack Obama, why Kamala Harris’ loyalty may have contributed to her failed campaign, and why President Trump’s Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, might have a better handle on him than anyone who held the role in his first term. 🐝 This podcast was recorded from the Mo News office at Industrious at Midtown on 50th St. — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. He also addresses the Trump administration’s policy of detaining and deporting international students—warning it could become a dark chapter in U.S. history reminiscent of the McCarthy era. Mo News visited the White House this week to get perspective on the Trump agenda 60 days into the administration from DOGE to immigration to tariffs to their “Make America Healthy Again” initiative. We interviewed several top officials during our trip. This episode will include two conversations.  First, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. joined us just hours after announcing sweeping cuts to his department—slashing the workforce by thousands. Kennedy argues the agency (which includes the CDC, FDA, NIH, and others) has grown bloated under Biden and says fewer administrators will actually make it more effective.  Kennedy also opened up about his crackdown on soda in food stamps, his baby formula initiative, and where the president has drawn a line when it comes to MAHA. In a wide-ranging conversation, Kennedy laid out his plan to reshape HHS—and why he believes doing “more with less” will improve care. Second, we present our conversation with May Mailman, a senior policy strategist and Deputy Assistant to the President. She discussed what makes the second Trump term different, from the whirlwind pace, to the pre-planned executive orders and how aggressive implementation have reshaped the administration's early impact. We get into the administration’s controversial border deportation strategy, including the legal battle over deporting alleged gang members to El Salvador using a law from 1798.  Beyond that, Mailman also opens up about working with Elon Musk on the administration’s Doge initiative to cut government waste, explaining why his “outsider” mindset—paired with insider legal expertise—is making changes she once thought were impossible. We also explore how those aggressive early cuts are being refined to avoid what some call indiscriminate slashing. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. The first months of the second Trump administration have been filled with economic headlines: on-again/off-again tariffs, fluctuating markets, and the threat of a recession. In this episode, we dive deep with Roben Farzad, host of NPR’s Full Disclosure podcast, on how we got here to this point over the last several decades. Roben explains how years of free trade and offshoring have led to rising stock markets and cheap luxury goods, while millions of Americans still feel the pinch of rising inflation and housing prices–issues that swept Trump into office in 2024. We also discuss the rise of China and whether Trump’s tariff plan is a realistic solution for solving these problems. Plus, electric vehicles, the state of the media, and how AI will affect all of these areas going forward. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Since his inauguration just over one month ago, President Trump has signed a series of executive orders and taken other actions to remake and reduce the size of the federal government. And in the process, he’s challenging the checks and balances that are a hallmark of our democracy. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed in the past month challenging some of those executive actions. Federal courts across the country have started to weigh in.  We thought it would be a good idea to go back to basics, with some Government and Constitution 101. And for that, we’re talking to Ben Sheehan, best-selling author of What Does the Constitution Actually Say? A Non-Boring Guide to How Our Democracy Is Supposed to Work.  Ben has appeared as a political analyst on Real Time with Bill Maher, Good Morning America and CBS News. He’s host of the upcoming series Civics Made Easy on PBS. Aside from politics, Ben is a former award-winning producer at Funny Or Die.  Jill Wagner (@jillrwagner) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. We all have so many questions when it comes to fabric care. How do you get your whites whiter, avoid shrinkage, and get out those really tough stains? What is the ideal temperature to wash your clothes? Do you actually need to separate whites from colors? What is the best way to pre-treat clothes? Should you use any setting besides ‘normal?’ Also, do those missing socks really go missing in the machine, or is that a figment of our imagination? We addressed dozens of your questions in this ‘news you can use’ conversation with Procter & Gamble Senior Scientist Sammy Wang. She helps lead teams creating products like Downy and Tide.  Wang recently visited Mosheh’s home as he got a new washer and dryer in his new apartment. In this sponsored conversation, we take your questions about the laundry process. #downypartner — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. It’s now been more than 400 days since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th, 2023, killing more than 1200 people, and kidnapping more 250 others, including Israelis and foreign nationals. Of those, there are still seven Americans being held, four of whom are believed to be alive— including now-22 year old Omer Neutra, who grew up on Long Island in New York.  With about two months until President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office, Mo News spoke to Neutra’s parents, Orna and Ronen Neutra, about how they think it could impact hostage and ceasefire talks.  The Neutra’s spoke at the Republican National Convention and attended the Democratic National Convention. Will shares his incredible journey, shedding light on the mental and physical challenges of holding his breath for more than 4 minutes underwater (He says he can hold it for more than 8 minutes if he stays stationary.) He discussed the techniques he uses to "turn off his brain" and achieve a state of focus during his dives. We also delve into his experience being featured in the recent Netflix documentary "The Deepest Breath," which highlights the intense and often perilous world of competitive freediving. Getting to the facts–and cutting out bias–is something we are big fans of at Mo News.  In our latest episode, Mosheh is joined by Dr. Jess Steier from the Unbiased Science Podcast to unpack the complexities of interpreting scientific and health studies. Together, we explore the common pitfalls of media reporting on health, including what we know about the latest studies on organic produce, aspartame, and GMOs, among other hot topics. This conversation helps listeners better understand the nuances behind the headlines in scientific reporting, and how you can better read between the lines. We also talk about eastern vs. western medicine as well as growing public distrust in institutions like the FDA and CDC, and how some of the agencies’ mistakes during COVID led to the current situation.  — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, this episode dives into the state of moms in America with an interview with Neha Ruch, founder of Mother Untitled (MU). She is also the author of forthcoming book, "The Power Pause,” looking at redefining stay at home motherhood.  Neha talks to Mosheh about how the perception of stay at home moms has transformed from a traditional archetype to a dynamic role that blends family life with personal and professional fulfillment.  We delve into new data MU has collected from thousands of moms across the country, with a focus on how they balance professional, family and mental health goals. The conversation focuses on how women are taking intentional breaks in their careers to focus on family without losing sight of their own ambitions. It is no longer a black or white (full-time work or full-time SAHM) phenomenon, but there are many shades of gray when it comes to modern work and family.    Follow Mo News on all platforms: Website: www.mo.news Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mosheh/ Daily Newsletter: https://www.mo.news/newsletter Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@monews Twitter: https://twitter.com/mosheh TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mosheh Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MoshehNews Snapchat: https://t.snapchat.com/pO9xpLY9
Record-breaking heat, storms, rising sea levels, and melting glaciers are among the impacts of climate change.  But today’s conversation focuses on the actions that can serve as an antidote to anxiety. In his new book, Life As We Know It (Can Be), CNN Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir says we can counter fear with knowledge and hope. His book explores stories from the front lines of environmental change, providing both sobering insights and hopeful perspectives on innovative solutions, including where progress is being made.  The conversation with Mosheh highlights Weir’s journeys around the world, sheds light on practical climate solutions and also critically examines where the climate change movement has failed. As part of our series of behind the scenes podcasts about Alex and Mosheh’s pregnancy journey in 2023, we spoke with one of the midwives who cared for her.  This episode features an interview with Christina McPherson, a certified nurse-midwife, about the midwifery care model, and the state of maternal health in the US. We discuss everything from the increasing C-section rates in the US, the history of why the use of midwives is much higher in the rest of the world vs. the US and the overall holistic care model. It turns out that we conducted this conversation just days before Alex delivered Baby Olivia.  Alex shares a lot of resources and tips during the conversation, which she started putting together here. So much news coverage is devoted to the president, but it turns out that first ladies have had an incredibly influential and undercovered role in many White Houses. At the same time, it is an often thankless job that receives a lot of scrutiny.  Mosheh sits down with New York Times White House correspondent and author, Katie Rogers, exploring her new book, ‘American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady.’  In our conversation, we dive straight into Jill Biden's role in the White House, especially when it comes to managing crises, from international wars to the struggles of Hunter Biden–including what it means that she is the family “grudge holder.”  This edition also delves into how several other recent first ladies—Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton–how each viewed their roles over the last 30 years, and some surprising revelations about their time in the White House.  Follow Mo News on all platforms: Website: www.mo.news Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mosheh/ Daily Newsletter: https://www.mo.news/newsletter Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@monews Twitter: https://twitter.com/mosheh TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mosheh Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MoshehNews Snapchat: https://t.snapchat.com/pO9xpLY9

This episode is a deep-dive into the most streamed documentary in America: ‘Quiet on Set.’ The series focuses on Nickelodeon, and startling claims of a toxic work environment for child stars and abuse at the network.  Mosheh is joined by Kate Taylor, senior correspondent at Business Insider, to explore the unsettling realities unveiled in the documentary. Her reporting and investigation in 2022 first revealed a number of issues, and inspired the making of ‘Quiet on Set.’  Taylor takes us behind the scenes into how she was first tipped off to the story, what she learned in her reporting, the making of the documentary and who would speak with her and who would not. We discuss what policies and laws need to change to ensure child actors are working in a safe environment and pedophiles cannot work around kids.  Follow Mo News on all platforms: Website: www.mo.news Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mosheh/ Daily Newsletter: https://www.mo.news/newsletter Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@monews Twitter: https://twitter.com/mosheh TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mosheh Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MoshehNews Snapchat: https://t.snapchat.com/pO9xpLY9
One of the most common questions we get at Mo News is related to media bias and finding trustworthy, non-partisan sources.  Mosheh sits down with Vanessa Otero, the founder of AdFontes and the creator behind the influential Media Bias Chart–which breaks down thousands of news sources based both on political bias and reliability. We delve into the complexities of bias, media bias and the reasons as to why it has gotten worse in recent years. Otero shares her expert insights on the landscape of news media, highlighting their process behind ranking news organizations, including a discussion on Mo News' placement in AdFontes' latest charts. American democracy has a number of challenges as it approaches its 250th birthday in 2026. The US has one of hardest constitutions in the world to amend, and is the only country to use an electoral college vs popular vote to elect presidents as well as the only democratic nation to allow for lifetime appointments of federal judges. Add in the filibuster and a less and less representative US Senate, there are a number of antiquated systems that give power to the minority over the majority in America.  In today’s episode we speak with author and government professor Steven Levitsky about his new book, Tyranny of the Minority. We dive into why we have the system we have, and potential solutions as we see cracks in American democracy in the aftermath of 2020 and the January 6 attack on the Capitol.  **Mo News Premium For Members-Only Instagram, Private Podcast: (Click To Join)** — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. America has long been obsessed with the idea of alien life and UFOS, especially as the US government has been less than open about what it has known for years.  A new book tells the incredible history going back a century, and why the US government coverup has been less about what it does know, and more about what it doesn’t.  Mosheh speaks with Garrett Graff, the author of “UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government's Search of Alien Life,” about the likelihood that we have encountered aliens, what is behind the decades of coverups, which presidents were most obsessed with UFOS (amazing history here) and the recent move to take unexplained objects much more seriously.  — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. As we cover the latest crisis and escalating violence in Haiti, we take a step back in this episode and dive into how the country got here. Haiti was once a pearl of the Caribbean, and a stable, go-to tourism hot spot, (the Clintons took their honeymoon there!) but things have taken a turn for the worst over the last few decades.  Award-winning CBS News correspondent and host Vladimir Duthiers has reported from Haiti extensively and has a deep understanding for the country and people. He joins Mosheh to discuss the recent developments and how three centuries of colonialism, US occupation and foreign involvement have impacted the island. From the Salem Witch Trials to Qanon, it turns out that conspiracy theories are “as American as apple pie.” We dive into why we believe them, and how they have impacted American history and democracy in a conversation with author and cultural historian Colin Dickey.  His latest book, “Under the Eye of Power: How Fear of Secret Societies Shape American Democracy,” provides some fascinating historical perspective into how fears of immigrants, other religions, and secret societies have impacted the country’s history over the last few centuries.  Mark Twain once said that “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes,” and we learn that from this unique look at the American story.  —- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. It is a story we have not learned much about….until now. Facing sexism and huge institutional hurdles, the story of the women who helped build the CIA and put their lives on the line in conflicts going back to WWII is an incredible, compelling history.    Writer Liza Mundy tells us their story in her new book, “The Sisterhood: The Secret History of Women at the CIA.” It’s a follow up to her previous book “Code Girls,” about the female code breakers of World War II. Mosheh talks to Liza about the role women played in forming the CIA, what foreign governments they helped infiltrate, what info they helped the US government learn (and what was ignored!!) during the Cold War all the way through the war on terrorism. It is the most prestigious consulting company in the world, and yet most of us know very little about McKinsey.  The multi-billion dollar firm helps governments around the world and the Fortune 500 make key decisions when it comes to their businesses and their images. McKinsey clients have included big tobacco, opioid makers, the Chinese government as well as US government agencies & the companies they regulate (at the same time). However, all of that work is shielded by NDAs.  How does all that work? Is it legal or ethical? As the Israel-Hamas war approaches 50 days, we are speaking with voices from both sides of the war to gain insight into the realities on the ground.  In this episode, Mosheh speaks with Khalil Sayegh. He was born and raised in Gaza, then lived in the West Bank, and is now in the US, where he recently got his master's degree from American University. His family is currently seeking refuge in a church in northern Gaza. Sayegh speaks candidly about the war, growing up as a Christian in Gaza, life under Hamas, why they are an obstacle for peace and the daily realities for Palestinians. At the same time, he talks about what he learned when he met Israelis for the first time, the empathy he gained, but also how he believes Israeli government policies have strengthened Hamas and worsened the conflict.  He recently founded a grassroots organization, the Agora Initiative, partnering with an Israeli to focus on long-term solutions to the conflict. We dive deep into the world of submersible exploration in this episode, and discuss what we can learn from traveling to the deepest parts of our oceans. We know more about outer space than our own oceans here on earth. The co-founder of Triton Submarines, Patrick Lahey, is hoping to help change that, and he explains why deep sea travel is so important in this conversation.  We all watched in horror this summer as one submersible ignored safety warnings and imploded near the Titanic in June. We discuss what was uniquely risky about that trip and contraption, and the lessons for the industry and governments from that disaster.  Lahey makes the pitch in this conversation for why deep ocean travel is not only safe but necessary for humans, including some of the things we are discovering about our planet, health and medicine through this type of exploration.  —- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. She has reported extensively on artificial intelligence, including recently seeing if an AI version of Joanna could fake out colleagues, sources and family members.  Stern is extremely well-sourced and has interviewed prominent CEOs from across Big Tech. We talk about the latest headlines across that world, including the likelihood of a TikTok ban as well as the latest from Meta, Google, Apple and Twitter.  Finally, we also discuss her recent coverage of a new scam where thieves steal your iPhone passcodes. — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. As we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we talk to Holocaust survivor Leo Ullman. He was born in Amsterdam in July of 1939, which makes him one of the youngest Holocaust survivors– and the few Holocaust survivors who are still living today.  Leo was just three years old when his family went into hiding in Amsterdam. That’s the same city where another young Jewish person, Anne Frank, was also in hiding.  Leo was raised by a Christian family for 796 days. He’s since written a book called ‘796 Days’ about that experience and his family’s eventual escape to the United States after WWII.  Hear Leo’s incredible story, what life was like for his family before and after the war, why they decided to come to America, and what he thinks about the resurgence in antisemitism and Holocaust denial. And hear the backstory of five missing pages of Anne Frank’s diary.  This Week’s Sponsors: – Athletic Greens – AG1 Powder + 1 year of free Vitamin D & 5 free travel packs – Boll & Branch Bedding & Sheets – 15% Off + Free Shipping | USE CODE: MONEWS LINKS:  Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Jill Wagner (@jillrwagner) is an Emmy and Murrow award- winning journalist. It has been a huge week for the U.S. Supreme Court as it heard two of the biggest cases of the year. Their decisions will help dictate the future of free speech and voting for all Americans.  One major case involves a Colorado web designer who wants to refuse to work for same-sex couples over religious beliefs. It goes against the state’s anti-discrimination law. (303 Creative LLC v. Elenis)  The second big case this week featured Republican legislators in North Carolina asking the high court to grant them unrestricted power to set rules for voting and elections. They believe they should be able to do so without oversight by courts or the governor. It could dramatically alter how elections are conducted in the U.S. (Moore v. Harper) Mosheh conducted Instagram Lives this week with Sharon McMahon aka @sharonsaysso, who closely watches the court, to break down the arguments and take viewer questions on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) discusses the lessons of the 2022 midterms for Democrats and Republicans.  “The cruelest irony of the midterm elections is that New York was the only place where there was a clear red wave,” he tells Mosheh, noting that Democrats are ignoring public safety and crime worries at their own peril. In fact, Republicans may end up clinching the House because of the seats they were able to pick up in NY on Tuesday.  Torres also talks about his concerns about the close results in the state and why they might mean that Republicans like Ron DeSantis may try to compete in the traditionally blue state in the 2024 presidential election.  Torres, 34, is one of the youngest members of Congress. He also speak about his feelings on whether President Biden should run for re-election in 2024 and whether it is time for a new generation to lead Democrats in Congress to replace Speaker Nancy Pelosi. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Can this coalition of protesters succeed in bringing down the dictatorship?  Mosheh recently spoke to Iran expert and NY Times bestselling author, Reza Aslan, who has a new book out:  An American Martyr in Persia. Aslan was born in Iran and his family escaped the rise of the Islamic regime in 1979. We discuss his family history, what led us to the current revolution and what is next. We go through various scenarios on why this revolution might succeed as well as what might cause it to fail. We also discuss his book, which tells the extraordinarily compelling, true story of Howard Baskerville, 22-year old Christian missionary from Nebraska who became a commander in the 1906 Iranian Revolution. Baskerville’s story has lessons for the latest revolution, more than a century later. And finally, Aslan talks about the evolution Islam is currently going through and how it compares to how Christianity and Judaism changed over time. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. (https://athleticgreens.com/monews) Interview: As we officially head into the final stretch with weeks to go until the midterm elections, we are taking the temperature of American democracy in this edition. Mosheh had the opportunity to sit down with CBS Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett and elections expert David Becker to talk about their new book:  'The Big Truth.' In our interview, Becker and Garrett delve into the dangers of the escalating rhetoric (like calling your political opponents “enemies”), the persistent 2020 election fraud claims and how they have warped views of the validity of American elections. They lay out the dire consequences it could have on next month's midterm elections and beyond…for our democracy. We also compare our current challenges to the 1960s and 70s--the last time it felt like this country was coming apart. They explain why this time is more dangerous. But, rest assured, it is not all doom and gloom. At the end, we talk about the solutions. If you care about this country and our democracy, this is an important listen.  – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. As we assess the damage from Hurricane Ian, we take a deeper look in this episode at the storm and the impact of climate change on major weather events.  Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci was on the front lines as Ian hit Florida and joined me for a fascinating conversation taking us inside a Category 4 hurricane. At one point, he was driving around in the eye of the storm and got two flat tires! He recounts that story and we talk about what he thinks viewers gain from reporters standing out in the middle of the hurricanes.  Cappucci also takes us through the numbers on how much more accurate forecasts have gotten through the years. We also learn his big 3 lessons from Ian for anyone who is ever in the path of a hurricane and is not sure whether to evacuate. The back half of the conversation is about all things climate change, weather and media coverage. Cappucci gives us an honest take on where science is actually at on climate change and the weather, what frustrates him about media (all or nothing) coverage of climate these days. He explains what weather events are actually being impacted by climate change and what is just weather being weather.  – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. A year after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, we are still learning brand new details about the chaotic and deadly final weeks and days. In today’s edition, we speak with award-winning film producer Jamie Roberts, who premiered a new documentary, Escape From Kabul, on HBO Max this month. It focuses on the final 18 days at Kabul airport with new exclusive footage and conversations with the US Marines who were there, the Afghans trying to flee, as well as Taliban leaders who were on site. Roberts says it is past due that legislators in the US start to ask questions about what went down in August 2021.  We learn for the first time about the tragic details on how the Kabul airport airfield was cleared after the first days of mayhem on the runways. Decades after the Holocaust, we continue to learn new details about what took place and how the world did (and didn’t) react. This edition looks at a new film on what the U.S. leaders and the public knew before and during the war.  Mosheh speaks to documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and his co-director Sarah Botstein, who have produced some of the most highly-acclaimed documentaries in television history. We discuss their newest documentary, "The U.S. and the Holocaust" - which casts a critical light on America’s actions in the lead up and and in response to, one of history's greatest horrors. The film looks at WWII-era America, including how prominent politicians, journalists, and celebrities reacted to the atrocities of the Holocaust, and how it shaped U.S. history. We also look at American anti-immigrant and anti-semitic sentiment in the leadup to and after the Holocaust, as well as how US government treatment of Black and Native Americans may have inspired some of Adolf Hitler’s policies. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. After the most recent presidential elections, there are ongoing questions about the accuracy of polling and which ones to trust. And whenever I post a story about a poll, I get so many requests to do more on this topic.  Enter Anthony Salvanto, CBS News' director of elections and surveys. He is also the author of “Where Did You Get This Number? A Pollster’s Guide To Making Sense of the World.”  I talked to him about how pollsters get a true picture of the mood and sentiment of the country and why 1,000 people is the right sample size for both a city the size of Chicago and the entire US population. His answer: We need to think about the accuracy of a poll the same way we get a sense for how a bowl of soup or spaghetti sauce tastes. From one spoonful. More on that analogy in our interview, as well as his answers on how the internet has changed polling, his response to critics, which populations are the most difficult to capture and why polls have more power than ever before. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Nearly 60 years after assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the US government continues to keep thousands of files classified. President Trump and most recently President Biden both decided to block access to key archival documents (on the advice of the CIA) despite a law that says everything should have been released by now. Former Washington Post reporter and author Jefferson Morley, one of the most credible authorities on the assassination joined Mosheh for a conversation last fall.  What is the CIA still withholding from the public and why? What did they know about Lee Harvey Oswald's actions in the lead up to November 22, 1963 and why were so many CIA officials tracking his movements before the assassination? And could Oswald have pulled this off alone or was he being coached and assisted by any others? Morley is the editor of the JFK Facts blog, author of several books on the intelligence community and has spent a career exploring what happened and fighting for the government to release everything it knows. In our conversation, he takes a fact-based approach to break down what we know as well as what is being withheld and why....all these decades later. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. How close are we to a potential military conflict between China and Taiwan? Tensions are high with the Chinese conducting live weapons drills and practicing a potential invasion. It all comes in the aftermath of US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.   Former CIA Acting Director Michael Morell joins Mosheh for a conversation to discuss why he is extremely concerned about a Chinese invasion in the coming years, the role the US might play, the state of the US-China relationship and why the Pelosi visit may have been a major mistake.  Morell spent more than 30 years in the CIA, serving as Deputy Director and twice as Acting Director. He worked with multiple presidents, maintaining the CIA's relationships with foreign leaders, among many other duties. Notably, he was the only person who was both with President Bush on 9/11, and with President Obama on May 2, 2011, when Bin Laden was brought to justice. He is currently the host of the Intelligence Matters podcast and a senior national security contributor for CBS News. Summer is heating up but we're deep in a "crypto winter." Cryptocurrencies are having their worst year in a decade. The leading currency, Bitcoin, is down more than 70% from it's all-time high last November and the overall crypto market has lost nearly $2 trillion in value. At the same time, some crypto banks and so-called "stable coins" have gone bankrupt and several companies are laying off workers. Crypto skeptics are reveling and saying "I told you so," while the hardcore HODL'ers say it will come back even stronger! So what is going to happen?  Mosheh interviews crypto-journalist and the author of the "Crypto Uncomplicated" newsletter, Zack Guzman. They talk about crypto’s past, what popped the bubble, how bad it might get, how to keep your investment safe and what the future looks like in this space. As we continue to determine the fallout of Friday's Supreme Court decision, Mosheh speaks to CBS Chief Legal Correspondent Jan Crawford for insight into the rulings and what they mean for the future of abortion in America as well as issues like same-sex marriage, IVF and contraception. Crawford has nearly three decades of experience covering the court. She has a law degree from the University of Chicago and has reported on the Supreme Court for the Chicago Tribune, PBS, ABC and CBS News. When Mosheh last spoke to her in January, she predicted that the court would overturn Roe v Wade and so there was no one better to get perspective on how the decision went down. Crawford brings clarity to the various opinions, why Roberts is effectively on an island, why Justice Thomas brought up things like same sex marriage and contraception in his solo opinion and whether it even matters. She then goes into what the various states might do next and brings a fascinating perspective to the history of the original Roe decision and how it may have actually hurt abortion rights long-term. They also spoke about whether cameras may come to the Supreme Court, concerns about the safety of the justices, the fate of the leak investigation and what to make of the accusations the justices lied in their confirmation hearings. It is a landmark ruling that will send the issue back to the states and create a patchwork of laws, as well as reshape the nation's politics. Mosheh spoke with Sharon McMahon (@sharonsaysso) hours after the decision to break down the ruling, its implications on abortion law across the country and the future of the Supreme Court. They also go into new polling showing three out of four Americans no longer trust the court and how this decision could impact future elections. McMahon is a former government and law teacher turned Instagram star, who has built a community of nearly 1 million on the platform. She breaks down complex topics in history, law and politics in an easy-to-understand way. The conversation also took place on the @mosheh Instagram page and is available to watch there. ----- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning producer with 20 years of experience at networks including Fox News, Bloomberg Television and CBS News, where he was the executive producer of the CBS Evening News and launched the network's 24 hour news channel. As we mark Pride Month and the anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling that legalized gay marriage, Mo News looks at the incredible history and journey of the issue. In less than 25 years, public opinion and laws shifted on same-sex marriage at record speed. Mosheh speaks with journalist Sasha Issenberg, the author of "The Engagement," which documents how the issue got to the nation's highest court.  They spoke about the twists and turns in the struggle--including the debate within the LGBTQ community whether to even pursue marriage equality. In honor of Juneteenth, our newest federal holiday, this episode takes a look at the history of the day and what it symbolizes. While it was celebrated locally in Texas and other states for years, it was only officially made a federal holiday in June 2021. It is seen as a second Independence Day of sorts for many Black Americans who didn't actually get their freedom with the founding of the country. Today is the first edition of our new ongoing series, The Mo You Know, where we break down one topic in the headlines. Here are some great additional resources -- for kids and adults -- about Juneteenth. Feel free to suggest future topics for 'The Mo You Know' by emailing ContactMoNews@gmail.com. Congress may be about to pass the biggest gun safety bill in a generation. On the heels of the bipartisan gun reform agreement in the US Senate, @Mosheh speaks with an activist who has been on the front lines of the fight for a decade for some insight into what this means. Shannon Watts is the founder of advocacy group, Moms Demand Action. Watts was a stay at home mother to five when the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012 inspired her to do something about gun violence. She turned her Facebook message to 75 friends into the nation's largest grassroots anti-gun violence movement. Moms Demand Action now has more than 8 million supporters, making it larger than the NRA. Our conversation dived into the history of the fight, whether the new legislation will actually pass the Senate and what happens after that. Watts also talked about what she learned growing up in a family that owned guns, how she seeks to find a middle ground on the issue, what inspires her optimism and her concept of "losing forward," (aka how losing fights to the NRA has helped her cause).
