Most of us don’t really understand what it’s like to love someone deep in addiction...until we’re living it.In this earnest and valuable conversation, Anita Ondine Smith opens up about being married to former NBA player Randy Livingston while he battled gambling addiction for over two decades. She shares the confusion, the shame, the moments she felt completely lost, and how she learned that love alone wasn’t enough.Anita talks honestly about:- The early signs she missed- Why she hired a private investigator- What “boundaries” actually mean (and why most people get them wrong)- The turning point that finally got Randy real help- Why compassion worked better than controlIf you’re the one struggling with addiction, or you’re the partner, family member, or friend trying to support someone — this episode is for you.Resources mentioned:- Anita’s book: ASSIST: How to Help a Loved One with a Gambling Problem Without Losing Yourself- National Gambling Helpline: 1-800-RESETConnect with Anita:- Instagram: @anitaosmith- LinkedIn: Anita Ondine SmithIf this helped you, please share it with someone who needs to hear it.
Most people think beating addiction comes down to having more willpower. Chris Hill says that’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make.In this episode, we break down why willpower eventually runs out, what’s actually happening in the brain when cravings return, and how rewiring your mind (instead of white-knuckling) creates real, lasting freedom.Chris is the founder of Beat My Addictions and author of Get Your Life Back. He’s also completed extreme endurance challenges — swimming the English Channel and running over 950 miles across the UK. He’s not just talking theory. We talk about:- Why the survival mechanism in your brain works against you in addiction- The “separation model” — how to separate your conscious self from the system running in the background- His personal rock bottom moment and how he finally broke the cycle- The difference between white-knuckling recovery vs actually rewiring your brain- Why counting days can sometimes work against youIf you’ve ever felt like you keep failing even though you want to change, this episode will give you a completely different way of looking at it.Chris’s Book:Get Your Life Back – The Road to Freedom from Addiction (Available on Amazon)Free 7-Day Beat Addiction Plan:https://robhillfoundation.orgConnect with Chris:- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beatmyaddictions- Website: https://www.beatmyaddictions.comIf this episode helped you, please like, subscribe, and share it with someone who needs to hear it.Take care of yourself.#AddictionRecovery #Willpower #MentalHealth #RewireYourBrain #RecoveryPodcast #TheWillpowerPodcast

In this episode, I sit down with Evan Jarschauer, a licensed psychotherapist and one of the most experienced interventionists in the country.Evan has led interventions for families from all walks of life — including one that aired on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. We talk about what actually happens during a real intervention, the emotional weight of the job, and some of the heaviest cases he’s ever faced (including working with families where a parent is dying).Evan also opens up about his own childhood trauma and how it shaped the way he works with families today.Topics we cover:- What really happens behind the scenes of a family intervention- The emotional toll of working with families in crisis- Why denial is so powerful (and the most common things people say)- The difference between people who stay sober long-term vs. those who don’t- What it’s like when a dying parent wants to see their child get help before they passIf you love someone who’s struggling with addiction or mental health, this episode offers a rare look into how families can actually get help.Timestamps:00:00 – Intro01:45 – Evan’s personal story & childhood trauma06:41 – Doing Kim Kardashian’s intervention11:27 – What actually happens during a real intervention14:12 – The hardest cases (including dying parents)18:16 – Common things people in deep denial say21:16 – Why the substance is usually a symptom, not the root23:32 – What actually determines long-term recovery27:11 – What families should do first when someone is struggling31:52 – What keeps Evan doing this workEvan’s Website: behavioralhelp.comIf this episode helped you, please like, subscribe, and share it with someone who needs to hear it.#Intervention #AddictionRecovery #FamilyIntervention #MentalHealth---My Links:- Sober Mentoring: https://calendly.com/thewillpowerpodcast/30min- Instagram: @thewillpowerpodcast- TikTok: @willgordonsober

Hey everybody, welcome back to The Willpower Podcast.I was a Boston teacher sneaking bottles, blacking out, and waking up yellow-eyed in a hospital bed with doctors telling my wife I had two weeks left. Liver and kidneys gone. Two transplants later I’m sober, but I still remember the crushing shame that kept pulling me back every time I slipped.Today Chris Cummins (operations at Laguna Treatment Center, biggest detox/recovery hospital in Orange County) gets it from the other side. He’s seen thousands walk in defeated after relapse, carrying the same shame that almost ended me.Chris shares his own raw story — starting shots at 11, snorting methadone in PE, his fraternity rock-bottom “united front” intervention — and why relapse is the disease talking, NOT failure. We break down how shame kills progress, why family systems keep the cycle going, the “pink cloud” trap after detox, and the gratitude hack that kills shame before it kills your recovery. This one’s for anyone who’s relapsed and hates themselves for it… or watching someone they love spiral.Key moments:00:00 — My shame story + Chris’s first words to relapsed patients02:31 — Chris’s childhood: 8 shots before school at 1112:51 — The “united front” rock bottom that saved us both15:18 — Why shame is a self-fulfilling prophecy (review the tape like an Olympian)19:47 — Family homeostasis — the #1 thing that makes relapse worse25:48 — Daily gratitude tool that actually kills shameIf this hits you or someone you love, drop a comment with your biggest takeaway — it helps more people than you know.Need 1:1 help breaking the shame cycle and staying sober? First words to someone who relapsed: “I’m glad you’re alive.” No shame — just hope.Shame is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Review the “tape” like a pro athlete instead of beating yourself up.Relapse is the disease talking — not a personal failure. Those 999 sober days still count.Change your environment AND include family in treatment. Homeostasis will pull you right back otherwise.Families: Stop hyper-vigilant blame. Open communication + shared accountability = real recovery.Chronic relapsers: Get into specialized groups with people who get it. Longer stays = better outcomes.Aftercare hack: Demand value-based agreements and open conversations between facilities.Daily tool: Start small with gratitude (“I’m grateful for this coffee”). It crowds out shame.Thank you all for listening/watching. I truly appreciate each and every one of you!

I know transplant hell—yellow eyes, sepsis scares, rejection fears, the mental limbo after waking up with someone else's organ keeping you alive. Two transplants later, sober and fighting, but I still remember the grind.Today's guest? Daniel Eadle, UK dad, husband, multi-genre drummer, and CEO of his heating business. Diagnosed at 19 with PSC (primary sclerosing cholangitis) and autoimmune hepatitis—a rare, no-fault liver killer—he shrugged it off for over a decade, built his life, started a family, and kept pushing. Then April 2025: full liver transplant, sepsis, infections, massive rejection bouts, six weeks in hospital, ATG nuking his immune system. But he prepped like a beast (gym, nutrition, Perspectum scans), leaned on wife/kids, and came back drumming, running his company, and advocating proactive care so others don't wait for crisis. We talk raw:Diagnosis at 19 with just a leaflet—Google spiral terror10 years grinding through flares, fatigue, yellow skin, varicose veins—still building business and familyNo-judgment compassion: Why he never judged "drinking" livers in hospital—everyone's fighting somethingTransplant call (three false alarms), high-risk surgery, mental crush no one preps you forPost-op rejection terror: "Didn't think I was coming out"Family fuel: Kids knowing everything, book "My Daddy Has Cirrhosis" to explain it allSecond-chance clarity: More active dad, less regrets on the tableIf you're facing chronic illness, waiting for transplant, supporting someone, or just need hope—this one's for you. Three years sober after a liver transplant that almost killed me... but the brain fog, guilt, and that constant pull back to chaos? Still real as hell.In this raw convo with Dr. Tiff Thompson (PhD neuro, neurotherapy CEO, BCN/QEEG expert), we break down why shame and tough love backfire in addiction recovery, how your brain gets wired for cravings (low GABA profiles, dopaminergic burnout, default mode network traps), and how neurotherapy/neurostimulation can actually rewire the damage...no meds, no nonsenseWe talk post-transplant fog, integrating your "shadow" old self, grieving lost identity, and starting with radical self-honesty. Ryan Barrett (@ryanbarrett90) should be dead multiple times over: molested at 8, buried the shame in death metal, rebellion, blackouts, hard drugs, a near-fatal car wreck (femur shattered in 7 places), suicide attempt, yellow eyes, and a blackout knife night that almost ended everything. One morning he poured out his last glass of spiced rum, begged for help, and got sober for real. What's up everyone, Will Gordon here from The Willpower Podcast. This one's a banger – sat down with Quebec country rocker Rick Duff @Duff.yeehaw, who's 6 months sober and absolutely crushing it with his debut album Forever Reckless.Rick lays it all out: going from bricklayer to Canada's got talent show finale overnight, the wild party days in his 20s, those "loser birds" chirping after all-nighters, getting hammered through five straight shows and knowing he was letting fans down... that was his wake-up call to quit booze and drugs for good.We get deep on the guilt, the crossroads moment, surprising confidence from stacking sober days, sober hacks for touring, and turning massive pain – including losing his best friend Matthew to addiction – into therapy on tracks. Album's dedicated to him, man. Songs like "Reckless" and "Ford Ranger" hit hard.If you're grinding through quitting drinking, battling addiction, or just need some real talk on mental health and showing up better – this is the one. Rick's proof you can flip the script and give your best self to the people who believe in you.Timestamps:00:00 - Cold open hook + Quebec weather banter 02:26 - Fame explosion from TV show 03:44 - Rock bottom: 5 wasted nights on stage 07:07 - The moment booze was stealing his voice 10:02 - Loser birds & choosing sobriety 17:21 - Losing Matthew & the album dedication 26:07 - Sober touring hacks 28:23 - Motivation from other artists/books 30:13 - What's next for Rick 34:25 - Rick's final wordsStream Forever Reckless everywhere and follow Rick:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4MNUaMf0Yl05yY6x342xBHInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/rickduffmusic/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@rickduffmusicYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Duff.yeehawWebsite: https://rickduffmusic.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DUFFOFFICIEL/Hit subscribe if these stories fire you up – we're building a community of people stacking wins and getting after it sober. Hey everyone, Will here. Today's episode is terrific. I sat down with Jess Lopez, who's got 24 years sober and now helps others find their way to recovery. Her story starts like many of ours - first drink as a young teenager, living a double life in high school, and trying to keep it all together until it fell apart. Luckily, she was smart enough to catch it early! Unlike many of us. What made this conversation powerful was how Jess opened up about stuff we all struggle with: - That moment when withdrawal symptoms make you realize "this is real" - Having to "cocoon" herself from the world to get sober - Losing family to alcoholism and deciding to break that cycle - Learning how to actually live life without the bottle We get deep into: - Why it's so hard to be vulnerable without alcohol - The real challenges of early sobriety - Finding joy after putting down the drink - Why cookie-cutter recovery programs don't work for everyone Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Jess Lopez 02:46 Early Experiences with Alcohol 06:30 High School and the Escalation of Drinking 09:37 Recognizing the Problem 14:34 The Turning Point 19:04 Cocooning and Self-Discovery 24:21 Supportive Relationships and New Beginnings 30:19 The Ongoing Journey of Sobriety 33:35 Navigating Vulnerability and Alcohol's Role 35:54 The Journey to Recovery Coaching 39:44 Building a Supportive Recovery Environment 43:36 Understanding Emotions in Sobriety 48:38 Finding Joy and Self-Compassion 52:18 The Shift Towards Openness in Recovery 56:39 Integrating Healing and Self-Discovery 01:01:39 The Importance of Individualized Approaches 01:11:34 Connecting with Jess Lopez and Resources For those of you wondering if you can live a full life without alcohol, or if you're early in recovery and feeling lost - this episode is for you. Jess brings both personal experience and professional insight as a recovery coach. To the woman who has it all together at work but falls apart with that first drink - this episode is your permission slip to imagine a different way. Sydney's story shows us how to build success that doesn't require a drink to celebrate it. Sydney had the career. The success. The perfect-on-paper life. But in private? She was losing herself glass by glass, reflection by reflection, until the woman in the mirror became a stranger. In this bravely relatable conversation, Sydney shares: • The moment she realized being a "master manipulator" was destroying her from the inside • What happens when your "functional" drinking stops being functional • How she transformed her relationship with herself for the better But the real power of Sydney's story? It's not about what she lost. It's about what she found: Clarity. Self-love. Real connection. And a life that doesn't need a drink to be lived fully. Welcome to TheWillpowerPodcast, and today I'm sitting down with my new friend John (@jbuckofficial) for the kind of raw conversation I wish I'd heard back when I was still telling myself I was "fine." Here's the truth: Two years ago, I was literally weeks away from death. My drinking had destroyed my liver so badly that doctors gave me two weeks to live without an emergency transplant. And I STILL didn't think I had a "real" problem. Yeah – let that sink in. It took a liver transplant followed by a kidney transplant to wake me up. That's what alcohol is capable of.. My buddy John's story hits different but just as hard. On paper, he had it all – beautiful family, great life – but alcohol almost took every bit of it away. Today, we get real about what it's like to be that guy who looks like he's holding it all together while everything's actually falling apart. Look, we're not here to preach. We're just two regular guys who pushed it way too far before admitting something had to change. In this episode, we talk about: - How we convinced ourselves we were "functional" (spoiler: we weren't) - The lies we told ourselves (and our loved ones) - What it took to finally face reality (in my case, almost dying) - How John saved his family by choosing sobriety - The unexpected awesome stuff that came after quitting If you're that person who's starting to wonder if maybe, just maybe, drinking isn't working for you anymore – whether you're having three beers a night or hiding bottles – this one's for you. You don't have to wait until you're where I was, or until you're about to lose everything like John almost did. Hey, Will here. Just checkin in on ya. In this episode, I'm getting real about something that's been on my mind lately - the importance of living in the moment, especially when you're on this often confusing ride to sobriety. Look, I get it. Some days, you feel like you're on top of the world, ready to conquer everything. Other days? It's like you're right back where you started, forgetting how far you've actually come. I've been there, and I'm here to tell you - it's all part of the journey. Here's what I want to share with you: 1. The past is gone, folks. Dwelling on it? That's just wasting your precious present. 2. Even when life feels like it's kicking you down, remember - this feeling will pass. It always does. 3. Keep your eyes peeled for those little moments of unexpected joy. They're everywhere if you look for them. 4. Those small, joyful moments? They're not just nice to have - they're signs you're on the right path. Use them as fuel to keep going. 5. Cherishing small victories isn't just feel-good advice - it's a survival strategy in sobriety. I'll be honest with you - I still find myself in this loop sometimes. One minute I'm excited about life, the next I'm feeling like my old, alcohol-addicted self. But you know what? That's okay. Because each time it happens, I'm getting better at recognizing it and pulling myself back to the present. If you're struggling with addiction, trying to stay sober, or just looking to live a more present life, this episode is for you. I'm not here to preach - I'm here to share what's working for me, in hopes that it might work for you too. Subscribe to TheWillpowerPodcast for more raw, honest conversations about addiction, recovery, and the power of living in the moment. Remember, your past doesn't define you - your present does.
